Using the example of Dogberry, from Much Ado About Nothing, I demonstrate that in allowing his fools to usurp their position of clownish caricature, to move outside of their normal social spheres, Shakespeare exposes the folly within societal institutions. Much Ado About Nothing, by William Shakespeare
Much Ado About Nothing, by William Shakespeare In A Nutshell Much Ado About Nothing is one of William Shakespeare’s best-loved comedies. Written around 1598, the play is about a young woman wrongly accused of being unchaste who is later reconciled with her accusing lover. It is also about a second couple – two witty, bright individuals who swear they will never fall in love. Stories about young women wrongly accused, brought close to death, and then rejoined with their lovers were really popular during the Renaissance. Shakespeare used that trope (which can be traced all the way back to the Greek romances) to make this light and silly comedy. The play trips along at a steady place as characters invent and pass on totally misleading information; watching this process as it undoes characters is like playing a 16th century game of Telephone. This is a neat chance to watch Shakespeare shake a complex (sometimes unnecessarily complex) plot. Further, it’s a cool "study in progress" of Shakespeare: Beatrice and Benedick’s acidic romance is a more developed version of the hatred-turned-to-love from The Taming of the Shrew; and Don John, the inexplicably evil villain of this play, is a sort of character study for the inexplicably evil Iago of Shakespeare’s later play Othello. Tequila, Lime and Jalapeño Cocktail 1 shot of ice cold tequila 1 teaspoon of freshly squeezed lime juice 1 teaspoon of agave nectar 1 tablespoon of roughly chopped cilantro A couple of slices of jalapeño chili 1 cup of good quality sparkling wine Mix the tequila, lime juice, agave nectar, chili, and cilantro in a glass and stir vigorously. If you have a cocktail shaker, shake with some ice and pour into a glass. Then add the sparkling wine. My Mother’s Idea of a French 75 Everyone needs a little liquid strength for a visit with Mom 2 oz Champagne ½ oz lemon juice 1 oz gin 2 dashes simple syrup Combine gin, syrup, and lemon juice in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously and strain into an iced champagne glass. Top up with Champagne. Stir gently. Garnish with lemon peel. Caribbean Therapy Liz’s guilty pleasure is the Caribbean Hand Treatment; ours is this cocktail! Caribbean Rum Punch (makes 2) ½ oz. lime juice 4 oz. orange juice 4 oz. pineapple juice 1 ½ oz. dark rum 1 ½ oz. light rum A dash of grenadine for color Mix ingredients together, pour over ice, sprinkle with nutmeg and garnish with an orange slice and a cherry.
