An Introduction to Intake 1983

Gurkhas have been fighting in every military campaign for the side of British government since 1816 A.D. Internalizing precious treaty based on values and norms of Tripartite Agreement relating to Gurkha recruitment, held between United Kingdom. Nepal and India in 1947 A.D.

Although, world renown brave youth Gurkhas in their age of puberty, having keen interest and willingness to do struggle for social, economic and physical prosperity in own motherland, Nepalese youths are being recruited in British Army in every year despite of solving various difficulties searching an economic good occasion in sequence of employment.

Intake - 1983 is also one of the other intakes of recruitment in British Army every year. The youths (young men) are known as 'Numbery' of Intake 1983, Those who are from different areas of Nepal having hard physical exercise been recruited together in British Army in 1983 A.D. and obtaining Army Number and have become well-trained of 11 month long training. 'Numbery' of Intake 1983 have obtained British Army No. 21165725 to 21166214 so, as there are altogether 567 'Numbery' young Gurkha Armies in this Intake. All Numberies young British Gurkha Armies are realizing the matter that the first priority should be given for social requirement having a great mission to make successful through major commitment to bring social change along with circumstance of this 21st century.

Namaste.

My executive committee and I have been working for the Intake 1983 families by creating this SMARIKA as a collection of stories highlighting the achievement of our intake, our celebrations and our memories since 1983.

It is a great honour of mine to be able to write this letter and to share this wonderful book with all of you.

A fond memory of mine is visiting Ocean Park, Hong Kong during our training break. I remember feeling free and happy wearing mufti, after having worn our uniform for so long. Running away from the Gurujis and taking lots of photos are just some of the happy memories from back in the day. After completing our ten month training, we were all dispersed into ten battalions/units.

We, numberis and our families, got together for the first time after 25 years at our Silver Jubilee celebration in Aldershot, UK. It was a great event with many old memories re-visited and many new memories created. Now on our 35th anniversary, we are bringing you this journal, our SMARIKA as a way of celebrating the great achievements of our fellow numberis and our Intake 1983 as a whole. It is my great pleasure to be asked to write the Foreword for the 1983 Intake’s magazine, Smarika. My inclusion is that I too joined the Army in 1983 and so I join you all in celebrating the 35thanniversary.

I signed up in October 1983 and conducted training with the Royal Corps of Transport to prepare myself (with the other Gurkha potential officers) to pass the Regular Commissions Board. It was a tough course but I was successful and was able to start my officer training at The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 1984. On completion I was commissioned in to 7th Duke of Edinburgh’s Own Gurkha Rifles and flew to Honk Kong to join 1/7GR. That was a long time ago and I now find myself as Colonel Brigade of Gurkhas. Even in the remainder of the British Army there are only a very few who joined that long ago. A new development is the award of the Long Service and Good Conduct medal to officers. We receive it after 15 years and receive a bar for every subsequent 10 years so I look forward to receiving my second bar in October this year!

I know how strong the Intake group is and the fact that the 1983 Intake is still a strong society is clear evidence of this. All can remember back to their basic training at Training Deport Brigade of Gurkhas in Malaya Lines Hong Kong so long ago. All of you will have served with distinction in the Brigade of Gurkhas and I can reassure you that those currently serving work hard to maintain the excellent reputation you have created.

Message from overall Champion recruit Intake 1983

I, 21165980, Rajen Labung Limbu, recruited into British Army as a Gurkha Soldier on 11 February 1983. I was honoured as a Champion Recruit amongst the 490 recruits of Intake 1983 for the Brigade of Gurkhas and also for my Regiment 10th Princess Mary’s own Gurkha Rifle.

My most memorable moment was during our pre-selection recruitment in Depot Dharan (Eastern Nepal), being interviewed by our DRO (Director Recruiting Officer) Major P N Cook. During the interview stage, I was seating with my father ex 10GR Capt (Ret’d) Ran Sing Limbu and Major (Ret’d) Tilok Sing Limbu. The first question asked to me by Major P N Cook (1st 10GR) was of my age and I very proudly told him “I am 18 years Old!” To which he answered “No you are not, kina bhane, when you were born I was the one Bhale ko Tauko katne? Hummmm! Huncha. Timi mero bichar ma 20 dekhi 21 barsa ko hunu parcha hola.” I was caught in utter surprise to not only be caught of my lie but was equally stunned to see an English officer speak very fluent Nepali at the time.

Today, perhaps, we are at that point of your lives where some of us have already become grandfathers and are looking forward towards living out our lives in retirement. And I can’t think of a better moment than now on the cusp of celebrating our 35th Anniversary to share our beautiful moments that we have spent during our time in Training Depot (TDBG) and Malaya Lines. I encourage everyone to attend our annual gathering to share our

The only person we shared our sorrows and happiness were with our “NUMBARI” for better or worse. We’ve created such a strong bond of brotherhood that shall live forever amongst us. Lastly, I would like to thank all my numbernies, and bhanjas and bhanjis whom have endured the life of semi military along with us for their never-ending support. We could have only gone so far, if wasn’t for the support we received back home.

Post my 20 years in the Brigade of Gurkhas, I retired from the army in November 2003 finishing my duty with the 2nd Royal Gurkha Rifles. I currently reside in Folkestone (Kent) with my wife and daughter.

I sat down for hours in front of my laptop Wondering what exactly I could write about That gives people an insight on what goes beyond my constellation of thoughts.

And as I seeped deep into the realm of my emotions, The first thing I saw were 2 being laying unarmed with open arms Surrounded by catastrophe, yet unfazed by it.

The hid behind them the scars and bullet mark they received from the battlefield And showed me pure bliss and unconditional love in all forms.

They taught me the language of love and bravery They showered me with kissess and armoured me with kindness They taught me affection but also fed me logic.

Dinesh Gurung joined the Brigade of Gurkhas on 11 February 1983 in Dharan, Nepal. Having completed a year of intensive recruit training, he chose to join the The Queen's Own Gurkha Transport Regiment (QOGTR) voluntarily and never regretted this decision. Some of his numberi's were upset because of being sent to QOGTR but today they realized the huge benefits of QOGTR. He likes personal development therefore he started learning English from the British council and studied hotel management from the Baptist University during his off duty hours on his own expense. He worked part time for a year in Hong Kong Hilton hotel in the evening with his Commanding Officer's approval as an off duty role.

Having left the army, he worked two years in Hong Kong, ran his own business for two years in Nepal then joined Gurkha Reserve Unit (GRU) in 2002. As British Government announced permanent residency permit in 2004 for Ex-Gurkhas, then he took this opportunity to settle down with his beautiful wife and two boys in the United Kingdom.

Born in 1962 Sidingbari Gau Pauthak GBS and grown up as farmer's son and father passed away in 1971 when he was only 9 years old.

One day he was sitting outside his house. At that time Gallawal had come home, saw this young boy and encouraged him to attend to selection process for the Army. Although he wasn't strong built and never prepared himself, luckily he passed the selection criteria and joined the British army in 1983.

His nick name was Lucky Seven during the selection and he acquired 3rd last junior number 21166212.

Gokarna is very hard working and honest man. During the 9 months of recruitment training, he never passed APWT test but on the final inter section shooting competition he won GPMG best shooter.

After recruitment training, he joined 5 platoon, B company 7th Gurkha Rifle at Cassio Line Hong Kong. He was number one tea boy, never failed to bring tea at 6 o'clock every morning. He was very good in (Rote) shining boot, ironed for junior gurujee to company 2IC. He always cooked during the Nepalese festival Dashain.

JLC was held in Brunei in 1987 Sittang camp, Gokarna was very lucky boy and he was the only one who passed in his section. He worked as 84mm man Gokarna worked most of time in Reconnaissance Platoon. He retired in

In 2005 his security company was full time running with a few employees and himself working as security guards. He has worked hard to build the company to a stage it is of now.

21165737 Sgt Rabindra Jwarchan 6 GR. Rabin was in Clerks Pl 6 GR and 1 RGR. He had sustained a head injury 1995 in Hong Kong and was bed bound until his death in 2017. Whilst he was in care home in Kathmandu he was administered and looked after by British Gurkhas Nepal until his death. He is survived by his wife Mrs Urmila and daughter Angie.
