The study of the Portuguese marine ichthyofauna has a long historical tradition, rooted back in the 18th Century. Here we present an annotated checklist of the marine fishes from Portuguese waters, including the area encompassed by the proposed extension of the Portuguese continental shelf and the Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ). The list is based on historical literature records and taxon occurrence data obtained from natural history collections, together with new revisions and occurrences. -

Systematik og navngivning Den småskællede skolæst blev oprindelig beskrevet som Macrourus laevis, og den ses under dette navn i en del ældre litteratur (slægten ses undertiden stavet Macrurus). Senere blev den typeart for slægten Malacocephalus Günther, 1862. Malacocephalus omfatter syv arter, der er udbredt langs kontinentalskrænterne i næsten alle tropiske og tempererede dele af alle verdenshave (Froese & Pauly 2019). Der er dog stadig usikkerhed om, hvorvidt Malacocephalus hawaiiensis, Malacocephalus luzonensis og Malacocephalus nipponensis er selvstændige arter eller synonymer af Malacocephalus laevis (Cohen et al. 1990; Iwamoto 2015a). Her regnes de som selvstændige arter, og oplysninger om fiskene i Stillehavet er ikke brugt i det følgende. Kun en enkelt af slægtens arter er fundet i vore farvande. Malacocephalus hører til underfamilien Macrourinae, og den er nærmest beslægtet med Ventrifossa (Iwamoto 1972). Det officielle danske navn er småskællet skolæst (Carl et al. 2004), og det er et navn, der er brugt siden begyndelsen af 1900-tallet (Bøving-Petersen & Dreyer 1903; Otterstrøm 1914). Henriksen (1904) brugte navnet spansk langhale, og flere andre samtidige kilder kaldte arten for spansk langstjert/langstjært, men disse navne forsvandt hurtigt ud af sproget igen. -

Viosca Knoll Fish Biotope Associations Sulak et al. 2 - 1 DEMERSAL FISHES ASSOCIATED WITH LOPHELIA PERTUSA CORAL AND ASSOCIATED BIOTOPES 1 ON THE CONTINENTAL SLOPE, NORTHERN GULF OF MEXICO Kenneth J. Ross Key words: deep coral, faunal structure, population density, dominant species, species richness, biotope affinities, video transects ABSTRACT The demersal fish fauna of Lophelia pertusa coral reefs and associated hard-bottom biotopes was investigated at two depth horizons in the northern Gulf of Mexico using a manned submersible and remote sampling. The Viosca Knoll fauna consisted of at least 54 demersal fish species, 38 of which were documented by submersible video. On the 325 m horizon, dominant taxa determined from frame-by-frame video analysis included Stromateidae, Serranidae, Trachichthyidae, Congridae, Scorpaenidae and Gadiformes. On the 500 m horizon, large mobile visual macrocarnivores of families Stromateidae and Serranidae dropped out, while a zeiform microcarnivore assumed importance on reef ‘Thicket’ biotope, and the open-slope taxa Macrouridae and Squalidae gained in importance. The most consistent faunal groups at both depths included sit-and-wait and hover-and-wait strategists (Scorpaenidae, Congridae, Trachichthyidae), along with generalized mesocarnivores (Gadiformes). The specialized microcarnivore, Grammicolepis brachiusculus, appears to be highly associated with Lophelia reefs. Coral ‘Thicket’ biotope was extensively developed on the 500 m site, but fish abundance was low, only 95 fish/hectare. In contrast to Lophelia reefs from the eastern North Atlantic, coral ‘Rubble’ biotope was essentially absent. -

TARICHE, M.R. PINHO, P.N. DUARTE, A. FERNANDES & M.A. ABOIM 2004. Annotated list of fishes caught by the R/V ARQUIPÉLAGO off the Cape Verde archipelago. Arquipélago. Life and Marine Sciences 21A: 57-71. A prospective survey was carried out in October - November of 2000, in the Cape Verde archipelago, by the R/V ARQUIPÉLAGO. The main objective was to determine the species composition and relative abundance of the demersal fish resources living in the waters of the Cape Verde archipelago. A list of fishes caught with bottom longline during the survey is presented in this document, along with information about the area, depth limits and the relative abundance of the species in the catches. Ninety-seven different species from 49 families were identified from 20 long-line sets. To our knowledge, the following 12 species were recorded for the first time from the waters of Cape Verde islands: Etmopterus princeps, Etmopterus pusillus, Gymnothorax maderensis, Myroconger compressus, Laemonema robustum, Beryx splendens, Scorpaena elongata, Serranus atricauda, Taractes rubescens, Taracthichthys longipinnis, Pagrus africanus and Cathidermis sufflamen. The list is based on nine prospecting and research surveys carried out from 1980 to 2011 with different fishing gears. The ich- thyofauna list is diversified in 2 superclasses, 3 classes, 20 orders, 62 families and 113 genera. The largest family is Mac- rouridae, with 9 species, followed by Moridae, Stomiidae and Sternoptychidae with 7 species each. -

Jaw teeth well developed, of variable size and arrangement; no teeth on roof of mouth. Branchiostegal rays 6 or 7. Gill rakers tubercular; outer gill slit greatly restricted by opercular membrane connected to upper and lower reaches of gill arch. Two dorsal fins, the first short-based and high, with second ray spinous; second dorsal fin long-based, confluent with anal fin at end of tail; anal fin usually with much longer rays than second dorsal fin; no caudal fin; pelvic fin usually situated forward of pectoral-fin origin, 7 to 14 rays in species from Area 31.Exposed field of scales in almost all species covered with spinules; many with modified, thick, spiny scales at tip of snout and over ridges of head.
