 Is the pioneering body that took the initiative of introduci ng Dragon Boats to Egypt. We are a legally and officially registered company that aspires to promote tourism, culture, sports and friendship through holding Dragon Boat events. Our company was founded by Mary Lai, and is run under the presidency of Ehab Gouda. Since 2016, we hav e been organizing Dragon Boat festivals in Egypt during the Chinese holidays.  We focus on strengthening the friends hip relations between Egypt and China through establishing stronger cultural ties between the two nations and our activities and events are fully endorsed by the Chinese Embassy in Egypt and the Chinese Culture Center in Cairo.  We actively pursue recruiting more Egyptians to participate in the Dragon Boat Festivals. We also provide them with the equipment needed for training and we encourage the participants to professionally pursue Dragon Boating through forming teams that could compete internationally. Moreover, we promote the culture of Dragon Boat festivals through holding annual festivals to spread this sport in Egypt, and to attract tour ists from around the globe; thus supporting Egyptian tourism.

 Beside being the world’s longest river, the Nile river connects 11 vital countries in with a population surpassing 487.5 million, as est imated by nilebasin.org in 2015.  The Nile is associated with growth, prosperity and development among the countries of the Nile Basin. Most of the population in the Nile Basin countries resides near it. It is estimated by nilebasin.org that the total population living in the boundary of the Nile river exceeds 257 million.  As it is the case with all African countries, the Nile Basin have a promising demographic composing predominantly of youth. It is estimated by nilebasin.org, that the sum total of the populat ion of the Nile Basin accounts for about 40% of the total African population.  With an astounding length of 6,500 KM and a promising population density across its bank, the Nile River serves as great medium to promote the sport of Dragon Boat along.  Nile basin countries share the gi ft of the world’s longest river, the Nile River. Our goal is to use the Nile river as a medium to gather Nile Basin Countries around the Dragon Boats.

 As were are greatly inspired by the One Belt One Road Initiative, we believe that Dragon Boat could be an innovative tool into connecting the countries along the Belt and Road and establish a stronger bond among them.  Since Dragon Boat Egypt has proved to be efficient in promoting Dragon Boat in Egypt, we would like to take our activities a step forward and extend them throughout Nile Basin countries of Africa.  This step will help promoting and further growing the sport throughout the continent, as it will also help in establishing a stronger bond among the countries of the Nile Basin while encouraging people to people diplomacy.

THE BIGGEST AND BEST CHAMPS YET - ON TWO LEVELS ! WELCOME to Dragon Sport News, the E -magazine with news and views on all aspects of Dragon Boating and what people think and feel about it ! What a great 2019 for the Sport with both the IDBF World Champs in Payatya, Thailand and the EDBF Club Crew Champs in Seville, Spain attracting record numbers of participants, for such Championships, with nearly 4000 from 30 Countries in Pattaya and over 2 000 from 64 Clubs (15 Nations) in Seville !! Meanwhile the ICF continues to try and persuade the IOC that the ICF is as big a player in the Dragon Boat World as the IDBF. To this end the ICF is planning a demonstration Dragon Boat Race , during the 2020 Tokyo and the ICF President has persuaded the Chinese Association to build an 8 paddler boat for the occasion. As a result, of these latest ICF actions and many others beforehand , the IDBF recently made a formal complaint to the Global Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF) about the continuing incursion o f the ICF into our Sport and in particular. The complaints will also be put before the IOC Ethics Committee, with a similar complaint , no doubt, going to the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA). The truth of the ICF’s involvement in our Sport is that it is very small, with less than 1000 participants (all from IDBF Member Countries) at each of the ICF’s last three events, held in Atlanta, Moscow and Kiev, over the last 18 months and only a few events on the ICF Calendar , as opposed to over 150 IDBF Members & Festivals events. Practically the ICF is a ‘bit player’ in our Sport but politically the ICF has influence within the Olympic Family and that is a problem. Racing The Dragon ! It is almost 40 years since in 1980, I first became involved in Drago n and began to develop modern Sport Racing. F irst in the UK, with the formation of the British Dragon Boat Racing Association (the BDA) in 1987 and then the EDBF (1990) and finally the IDBF (1991), all organisation s’ in which I have been proud to serve our Sport, in various roles from Secretary -General to President. To share with you my journey of a life-time and to trace the development of Sport Racing from the 1980 Hong Kong Festival on the River Thames, in London, to the present day, I will be writing a book over the coming winter months, for publication in the Spring of 2020 and I would like to include your experiences of our great Sport, in the book. So please drop me a line or two or mor e, of how you came to Dragon Boating, when and where and I will endeavour to include every contributor in the book. Pictures too would be greatly appreciated . Over to you ! Congratulations go to Mike Thomas and Alan Van Caubergh on their re-election as IDBF President and Treasurer, respectively, at the IDBF Members Congress held in Pat taya on 26 Aug 2019. Congratulations too go to Ute Becker- Frenzel, Valery Morgun, Jorge Carracedo and Peter Jarosi on their election as EDBF Vice-Presidents’ at the EDBF Congress held in Seville on 29 July 2019 e See separate report s on the Congresses’.

MUCH MORE THAN A SPORT – DRAGON BOATING HAS LEGO DRAGONS TOO !

Review by Miganl. Lego 80103, the Dragon Boat Race The sets originally released for just the Asia Pacific audience became easily one of the hottest topics of discussion in the LEGO world earlier this year - or more specifically, the limited distribution of those sets! After that ensuing outcry, LEGO announced that starting with the third set targeted for the Asia Pacific region, the distribution for regional sets would be much broader, with 80103 sets scheduled to be available in Europe and in the U.S. around June 2019 Prior to LEGO's announcement, I made arrangements to get 80103 from Australia (thanks to helpful Brickset member). Read on to see if it's worth getting when it comes to a store near you. The box is decorated similarly to the Chinese New Year sets, with the gold seal on the top front right of the box indicating that this set is celebrating the dragon boat festival and part of the Chinese Festival Special Edition series. The box art shows the dragon boat race action - the front depicts the race underway while the back shows the red dragon team accepting the winner’s trophy as well as insets illustrating other features of the set. Inside the box there are five numbered bags, a perfect bound instruction book and a medium sized sticker sheet. MINIFIGS. There are an impressive fifteen minifigures in this set. Ten of them are the members of the two dragon boat teams. Both teams have new torsos and legs to this set. The red team is outfitted in white sleeveless shirts with red piping and black frog closures, tied with a bright red sash. Their legs are red and I particularly like the printing at the top of the legs showing the bottom of the shirt and the remainder of the tied sash in the team colour. The minifigs have a variety of expressions - some, but not all of them have two sided heads. In this picture they’re shown (left to right) from the back of the boat to the front. The minifig on the right is the drummer who sets the pace for the paddlers The printing continues on the back of the minifig and shows some nice detail. The green team has similarly gorgeous printing. Their shirts are orange, with green piping, frog closures, and sash. The legs for these minifigs are printed similar to the red team showing the sash in the team’s colour. Again, some, but not all of them have two sided heads. I was happy to see that there are ten different minifig heads, although there is a duplication or two in the hairstyles A very formal looking bespectacled gentleman in a black suit and tie looks like he must be the official for the race. He looks suitably distinguished with the grey piping on his suit, complete with a white kerchief. A vendor for the food stand wears a sand blue tunic with dark blue shirt underneath. The printing continues on the legs for the lower part of the tunic and sash. He wears dark brown pants, and I particularly like his sandals. His look is topped off with a conical hat. There are quite a few parts in new colours, The parts usage is terrific, and those pieces might just be my favourite new LEGO piece. The dragon boats move smoothly and allow for a lot of play. The set allow for a lot of storytelling from the race to the spectators to the food vendor. It’s a terrific display piece, too. I think it’s a worthy addition to the Chinese Festival Special Edition series. For the price (49.99 Euro, 44.99 GBP, assuming around $60 US, 643 pieces) it’s a pretty good deal and I feel the set’s good value

THE EURO CUP RACE SERIES 2019

EURO CUP RACE 2 - SEVILLE Held in conjuction with the 18 th EDBF European Club Crew Championships –25-28 July 2019 Seville also hosted the 2nd Euro Cup Race, as part of the 18 th EDBF European Club Crew Championships, organised by the Spanish Dragon Boat Federation . What is EDBF EURO CUP ? A series of primarily festival races held in European Cities, to which EDBF Members’ crews are invited to compete . The Euro Cup is designed to encourage Sport Racers to go to primarily to Dragon Boat Festivals and race for points and medals, whilst also scoring Euro Cup Points for their Country. The Format. The Euro Cup format is not restricted to the Standard Boat but racing the Standard Boat gains the most points, that is, Premier Standard Boat Races score 100 race place points and downwards, according to the number of crews in a competition class and a crews final position in that competition class – Prem Open, Women and Mixed 200m, 500m, whilst the Small Boat competitions score 50 points. The actual Euro Cup Points given, therefore, is a combination of place points and EDBF Member’s bonus points, which are allocated to the EDBF Members and not their competing crews. The number of EDBF Member crews, per competition class, that can score points is limited, as is the number of place points scoring ‘Home Crews’ so as not to advantage hosting Nations. Medals are awarded for each event In Seville, the race results from the EDBF Club Crew Premier Open, Mixed and Women’s Champs in both the Standard and Small Boat competitions, determined the Euro Cup Points for Race.2. TALKING POINT. – a Look At The Issues Of The Day “It would not be in the IDBF’s interest to have further discussions with the ICF”

“It would not be in the IDBF’s interest to have further discussions with the ICF” “In response to these and other ICF actions the IDBF Executive Committee had written a formal complaint to the Global Association of International Sport Federations “ so said the IDBF President, Mike Thomas, at the IDBF Congress held in Pattaya on 26 August 2019.. Important words for the future development of our Sport or just more ‘politics’ I hear you say. Well actually both and hopefully, on the political front; if the GAISF and IOC are true to the wording and meaning of their respective constitutions and the ‘Olympic Charter’, they will tell the ICF that Dragon Boating is NOT their paddle sport and to stop trying to subsume Chinese Dragon Boating but concentrate on their own ethnically different paddle disciplines, of Canoeing and , coming from North America and the Arctic Region.

From the email I recently received, copied below , it is ICF Jurisdiction. To try and answer your questions , the apparent that maybe how and why the ICF became first thing to correct is the ICF claim of having “a long involved in our Sport, is being lost or forgotten in the standing jurisdiction over ALL paddle sports”. This is just mists of time. So maybe a history re-cap for Kristof and not true. In 1996 (5 years after the formation of the others, will help in understanding what led to the IDBF IDBF) Article 1 of the ICF Constitution said:- Congress supporting Mike Thomas’s statement above . “The ICF is an international non-governmental non-profit world organisation for multidiscipline canoe- activity Kristof Erkiletian. Dragonboat Team DNA of unlimited duration . With a clarifying Bye-Law saying You may recall, I'm the person who's been collecting “The ICF as a multi-sport-organisation consists off all video from races all around the world to compile into a canoeing activities. particularly: Racing, Slalom, Wild- documentary on the sport. I now have over 20 countries but there is also something holding me back. water, Marathon, Canoe , ; Touring”.

In gallivanting around the globe to do races, i naively By Oct 2004 this clarifying Bye-Law had been jumped into extensively covering events run by both changed to - “The ICF as a multi-sport-organisation consists off all canoeing activities. Canoeing means every activity, which IDBF and ICF without acknowledging there has been an a paddler is facing the direction of travel with a single or double ongoing grudge between these organizations. bladed paddle ” It seems the root of dispute is that the latter By Nov 2006 this Bye-Law said “The ICF as a multi-sport organization claims to have longstanding jurisdiction organisation, which consists of all canoeing and over all paddle- sports , while the former organization activities . The ICF embraces every activity in which a paddler (yours) has really done all the work to bring Dragon Boat to is facing the direction of travel with a single or double bladed paddle” a world class level.

Do you foresee any sort of mutual unification of these As a result , ICF Bye-Law 2 was also changed, from the two odds for the greater purpose of furthering the sport , list of 7 canoe/kayak activities shown in 1996, to the or will it continue (at least for now) to be run by two addition of Dragon Boating in Oct 2004 (Touring was organizations? dropped) and in 2008 Ocean Racing and Canoe I had hoped to release a final edit at a time when there Freestyle. These changes, claiming governance over is full unity . Otherwise I risk unwittingly agitating both all paddle sports (whether the ICF was active in them or organizations simply by promoting evens held by either. not) were all made well after the IDBF was established. Even asking about this is something I am nervous about The IDBF’s status and standing, as the world Thanks again for your help and for your sincere and lifelong governing body for Dragon Boating , was recognised in dedication to the world's greatest sport, what a tremendous 2008, when the IDBF was finally admitted into GAISF honour it was to have you place a bronze medal around my Membership, on the basis that the IDBF was not in rivalry neck in the recent Worlds in Thailand Kristof with the ICF and that Dragon Boating and Canoeing were

So the ICF cannot claim to have any longstanding jurisdiction over all You added “do I foresee any sort of mutual unification for paddle sports and especially not Dragon Boating . the purpose of furthering the Sport, or will it continue to In fact by doing so, the ICF is in breach of both the be run by two organisations” ? Mutual Unification ?. Words to conjure with. When the In addition, it was agreed that it does not make sense IDBF was constituted in 1991, the ICF were both aware to have two different World Championships for and supportive of the IDBF’s formation, as a fellow paddle Dragon Boat Racing. The ICF proposed and it was sport federation and indeed the then ICF President agreed that the best and most effective way to deliver (Sergio Orsi) was happy to help the IDBF to establish itself “Dragon Boat Racing Services” for the ICF members within the multi-sports world and the Olympic Movement. would be for them to be able to take part in IDBF World Championship Regattas . During 1998/1999, when the ICF elected a new President (Ulrich Feldhoff) I wrote to him (as the IDBF The IDBF side agreed that all National Federations Executive President) suggesting ways in which the ICF affiliated to ICF will be invited to take part in the IDBF and IDBF might work together, for the mutual benefit and World Championships from 2003 onwards and that development of both sports, but as ‘partner paddle sports’. Membership within IDBF was open to ICF Members.

My suggestions were rejected , as the ICF considered Following the signing of the 2003 JA, meetings were itself to represent all paddle sports within the IOC and held t o put flesh on the bones of the agreement but after didn’t want another paddle sport Federation becoming ‘IOC two meetings the ICF side walked out of the discussions Recognised’ and maybe in the future becoming a separate and later declared unilaterally declared that the Joint Olympic Games Sport, which in itself would mean having Agreement was invalid. to share the Olympic Games money with another paddle From 2005 until the present day the ICF has involved sport. Not what the ICF would want. Basically, the ICF itself in our Sport and claimed before the GAISF and the position and view of itself has not changed since IOC that the ICF was already the fully recognised world Despite this intransigence , the IDBF continued to try and authority for all paddle sports (as defined by the ICF). work with the ICF, even though by 2000 the ICF were In the past 12 months, the IDBF has again tried to preparing to set up their own Dragon Boat Commission, come to a partnership agreement with the ICF but which they did in 2002 and then to run their own Dragon unfortunately the ICF still maintains that all paddle sports Boat Championships, the first of which was in 2005.. must be subservient to the ICF and continues with its During this time IDBF tried mediation and then dragon boat programme. arbitration with the ICF , through the CAS, which was So can there ever be Mutual Unification . Given the unsuccessful but in 2002 the IDBF managed to get the ICF ICF’s past track record in negotiations, its view of its own to the discussion table, which resulted in the 2003 Joint standing and importance in the paddle sports world and Agreement signed by myself for the IDBF and Jose the fact that it has never actually been involved in the Perurena (ICF Sec-General) who is now the ICF President. development of the modern sport, it seems extremely The key points in the Joint Agreement were that the unlikely that any ‘unification’ can take place unless, ICF acknowledged the standing of the IDBF as the possibly, the ICF accepts again and stands by the 2003 established independent International Federation for Joint Agreement and fully accepts the IDBF as the only Dragon Boat Sport and t he IDBF acknowledged the ICF recognised world governing body for Dragon Boat Sport. as the established International Federation for Canoeing . Run by two organisations ? There are a few sports The ICF also confirmed that the decision to organise where there are two or even more ‘world governing Dragon Boat Racing, was taken for the purpose of bodies’, such as professional but as far as I am providing Dragon Boat services only for ICF affiliated aware, there is no Sport where the governing body of one Canoe Federations. With regard to the IOC, it was proposed that the IDBF and Sport. THE POWER OF THE DRAGON – ONE MAN’S QUEST FOR GOLD ! Bob Mina . 21 August at 18:01 ·

I have been racing Dragon Boats for 15 years and have been fortunate to race at the International level for the last decade. I learned early on just how hard it was to make the podium, and how elusive the top step can be. I was fortunate to win my first Gold in 2013 (Senior A Mixed), and add a second one in 2017 (Premier Open). Through that time I've watched as friends have scored their first, or second, or added to an already incredible stash of medals. Tommy Leonardi has been a teammate of mine for the last 9 years , but he's been in the sport way longer than that. His DNA runs deep in Philadelphia Dragon Boat, he's been to many, many World Championships . He had a suitcase full of silver for his work BUT NO GOLD. So after Kunming when Senior B Mixed won Gold and ended team mate Christopher Marquart's 24-year long pursuit, Tommy was the last one of our crew missing a Star Spangled Banner.

He did the work. He bought a HR monitor. He weighed his food . We talked obsessively about HR zones, recovery, and focus. He raced OC1 sprints. He showed up and put in his seat time at practice. He raced all the time trials he needed to, and as the entire Senior B program elevated, he rose with it. His final TT was 14 SECONDS faster than he'd been in 2017. My biggest regret of not racing Worlds this cycle, was that I wouldn't be there in-person, I would have to watch and wait. I watched the streaming but had to go to bed at midnight...I would have to wait to see the results in the morning. I powered on my phone at 6:50AM. No messages.

I found the IDBF Results page . I scrolled like a squirrel on his 4th espresso until I found SENIOR B OPEN STANDARD... 1. USA 2.Thailand 3. Canada I blinked. I blinked again . I made DAMN SURE I had the right race. " Senior B Open, Standard Boat, 2km.. Senior B Open, Standard Boat, 2km !"

My hands stared shaking . I thought about all my mates in that crew -Jim Morris , Kevin McFadden, Dave Wald, Chris Marquart, "Did they do it?!" I texted Tommy- "Please tell me you were in that boat."In 12 seconds he replied with a photo...of a Gold Medal around his neck . I know I had a lot of friends racing over there; I know this was just one of SEVEN Gold medals won by Team USA on Day 1, but this one,.this one was the one I wanted as much as I've ever wanted one of my own . Making Team USA is hard. Making the podium is hard. Losing is the hardest. But winning, winning after a nearly 20-year pursuit, hearing your anthem for the first time, there Mike MacKeddie-Haslam, IDBF Founder & Honorary President are few moments in sport that will ever be so pure in their joy congratulates and presents Tommy with his first Gold Medal .

TALKING POINT 2 – a Look At The Issues Of The Day 1

China’s Dragon Boat Policy – One Sport, Two Systems ?

Returning to the big ‘Talking Point’ of the day, in fact the most important talking point in the history of the IDBF, that is, the continuing attempts by the ICF to take over and control Dragon Boating but surely the big question, in all of this is, where does China stand on this issue ? As we all know, China is where Dragon Boating started, Where Dragon Boating is concerned China was a going back well over 3000 years of recorded history, Founding Member of the IDBF (1991) and the ADBF even before China’s traditional Dragon Boat Festival, to (1992) and the first World Championships were held in commemorate the death of Yuan, began over 2000 China in 1995 ( yang). years ago and which is still celebrated today, with the China was also instrumental, through its influence Dragon Boat Festival now a public holiday in China. within sport , in assisting the IDBF to gain membership is run and controlled by government of GAISF and recognition for Dragon Boating as a officials and the President and Vice-Presidents of the distinctly separate Sport from Canoeing, with its own Chinese Olympic Committee and the Minister and Vice- independent governing bodies. Ministers of Sport, are one and the same people, China has always backed the IDBFs quest for IOC appointed by the Chinese government, as was in the recognition and eventual inclusion in the Olympic Games early years, the IDBF President – now the IDBF and also supported the IDBF in complaining to the IOC President of Honour.. and GAISF over the actions of the ICF, as the extracts When it comes to international sport and Chinese below, from a letter from the Chinese sports authorities, Teams , nothing happens without government approval, in November 2002, shows : - especially when it comes to policy matters..

To : Executive Board Members of the International Olympic Committee 30 November 2002 Members of the Council of the GAISF President of the International World Games Association We write to you concerning the unilateral claim by the Federation (ICF), that the Dragon Boat Racing is a discipline of canoeing. This claim was made without reference to the International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF), which is the original and established world governing body for dragon boating. The ICF made its claim without having ever organized an international dragon boat competition anywhere in the world and in the knowledge that the IDBF was seeking recognition from the IOC, for the sport, and for membership of GAISF.

We would like to clarify our viewpoint and position on these matters, which in consideration of the positions we hold in sport, both nationally and internationally, represents not only the voice of the international dragon boat communities but also that of Asia and most importantly China, the country where dragon boating originated from over 2000 years ago .

It is quite inappropriate for the ICF to claim dragon boating as a discipline of canoeing and we find the notion unacceptable for the reasons of carrying forward the Olympic spirit, and the culture, history and technology of dragon boating.

In summarising our views , we would reiterate that having some similar techniques does not mean that dragon boating and canoeing are the same thing. The dragon boat and the canoe are technically, historically and geographically, quite different paddled water craft and therefore it is quite illogical, inappropriate and irresponsible to simply categorize them as being the same; for to do so ignores the historical and geographical facts and insults the cultural origins of the dragon boat from China, and the canoe which derives from North America or the kayak which comes from the Inuit peoples of the Arctic. Mr ZHANG Faqiang, Mr WANG Xiaolin,

Vice Minister of State Sport General Administration of China, Director-General of the Sport For All, General Administrative Vice President of the Chinese Olympic Committee, Centre of the State Sport of China President of the International Dragon Boat Federation President of the Chinese Dragon Boat Association

This unreserved support for the IDBF meant that the Only Dragon Boat events organised by the IDBF, Chinese Canoe Association (CCA) was not involved in ADBF or CDBA , such as Asian Championships and the Dragon Boating and even wrote to the ICF, that Dragon IDBF World Cup were held in China and even the Boating was not Canoeing. Internationally, Chinese Guangzhou Asian Games Dragon Boat Races were Teams only attended IDBF and ADBF events and never organised by the Chinese Dragon Boat Association, an ICF or ACC (Asian Canoe Confederation) event. under the ADBF and following IDBF Rules and Regulations.

But in the last 2 or 3 years, things have changed When it comes to ‘elite international competition’ dramatically, with the CCA and ACC jointly organising an however, which, as they see it , are “competitions that Asian Dragon Boat Champs in China and this year the 1 st come under IOC Olympic Sports Federations ”, such as ICF World Cup, also held in China. the ICF, then in terms of Dragon Boating in the Olymp ics The ACC were the lead federation in the recent Asian and the Asian Games; China now think s that supporting Games in Indonesia and the ICF is pushing to include the ICF and ACC is the quickest way to achieve their Dragon Boating under the ICF banner in the next Asian prime goal of getting our Sport in to the Olympic Games.. Games and also the World Games, to be held in Beijing. Are they right ? Well that really depends on the IOC. Meanwhile the CCA, at the direct request of the ICF The longer the IOC delays in recognising the IDBF or President, has developed, with financial help from the fails to tell the ICF that Dragon Boating is not their sport COC, a new 8 paddler ICF Dragon Boat, which was and that the IOC do NOT recognise the ICF as the world exhi bited over the weekend 14/15 September 2019, at the authority f or Dragon Boating, then the more the ICF will ICF Flat Water World Champs, held in Tokyo. try to persuade the COC to stick with the ICF .. The object of this is to use the 8 paddler boat in a As the appearance of the 8 paddler boat shows , the demonstration of ICF Dragon Boating during the 2020 ICF are now in a position to ask the IOC to include Olympic Games in Tokyo and then to race it in a serie s of Dragon Boat Racing in a future Olympic Games, under Dragon Boat Festivals around the world, supposedly to the ICF, as Canoe Federations can easily make up a show the CCA’s support for the IDBF. (Work that one out !) Mixed Dragon Boat crew of 8 paddlers from, for example, the two K4 (Kayak F our) crews (Men and So what has brought about this change in China’s Women ) already in an Olympic Canoe Team. Dragon Boat policy. From the Chinese perspective the answer is simple - “Olympic Dragon Boat Racing’. No need for the ICF to ask for any more athletes , no need to ask for any more time or a venue, as the Dragon Having Dragon Boating as an Olympic Sport has Boat Races can be held after the Olympic Canoeing always been the prime aim of the Chinese Government Races and on t he same course. So all the ICF would (Olympic Committee) and since the foundation of the need from the IOC is 30 Medals. IDBF, China has seen the ID BF as the best way to achieve this, as their GAISF and IOC sup port shows. This is, potentially, an easy solution to the problem for the IOC and COC but one that would leave the IDBF However, with the as cendancy of the ICF and ACC in out in the Olympic cold and probably lead t o a complete our Sport, over the past few years; the continuing split in the Sport and a fragmentation of IDBF Members. opposition by the ICF to the IDBF becoming an IOC recognised federation and the reluctance of the IOC to But if the present IDBF complaint to the GAISF and give such recognition until – as the IOC Sports Dept puts IOC Ethics Committee , about the ICF’s incursion into it, “you have resolved your problem with the ICF”, has our Sport is upheld or the IOC Executive Committee led, it would seem, to a shift in thinking within the Chinese itself takes action against the ICF, then the Sport can sports authorities. and will develop into a major sport around the World and inclusion in the Olympic Games, under the IDBF , with This appears to be along the lines of supporting both the full and exclusive support of the Chinese Olympic the IDBF and the ICF but in different sphere s of influence. The 2020 IDBF Club Crew World Championships in France is anticipated to be the biggest dragon boat event ever. Located in an Alpine valley near the Swiss border, the 2020 CCWCs is expected to see in excess of 6000 athletes from over 30 IDBF Mem ber countries, competing over 4 days of competition .

The primary goal of the International Breast Cancer Paddlers Commission (IBCPC) is to ensure that International Breast Cancer Survivors (BCS) participation festivals and international competitive events are raising awareness about life after a diagnosis of and treatment for breast cancer. The IBCPC is an Affiliated Commission of the International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF)

IBCPC President Meri Gibson . Articles courtesy of the IBCPC Newsletter “Keep Abreast with IBCPC ”. IBCPC is expanding globally at a fast pace ; we have added 12 more teams in the last few months and two more countries. I am so excited to see the growth across these countries. Development must be team based as we grow the countries around the globe. Ther e are further reports in this newsletter of new teams joining the IBCPC family. While we consider ourselves first and foremost to be paddlers , there are many who are now thinking of themselves as athletes . Many paddlers migrated to competitive teams in th eir various countries, paddling and competing alongside their peers but w e need to ensure that we are always acknowledge the fact that many of our paddlers are not in this athletic frame of mind and are a part of a BC dragon boat team for many different r easons. I think of Don McKenzie’s speech at the IBCPC Congress in Florence last year , when he said that “we have been on this paddling journey that started with a diagnosis of breast cancer ”. In time t his le ad many of us to become competitive and to no longer be happy with finishing first in our lane , with many paddlers wanting to finish first overall. The constant talk of where a team placed overall in Florence on the world stage is certainly testament to that. But is it true that we now have come back to, as Don put it, take on the “caring” mantle. We need to make sure that everyone has the opportunit y to be in a boat, whether a social or competitive paddler . No one should be left behind on the dock . I know in my own team that caring stretches to everyone but especially who are currently navigating the path of a Stage 4 diagnosis. Interestingly don’t want to be molly -coddled, they want to be in the boat, be at every event, they want to attend regattas, to compete, to win. It doesn’t matter what that in clusiveness looks like, or how you do it in your team, just so long as it is there and these paddlers know that. I asked our youngest team member Lou to tell us a little about her adventures and what being in a dragon boat team means to her. LOU’S STORY I first tried dragon boating after moving to a new city in my twenties. I had been playing competitive basketball until then but as the summer came along and I wanted to meet more people I joined the dragon boat team at work . As my career progressed, dragon boating took a back seat. I charged ahead through life, had three kids, separated from my partner, moved home and then as I was preparing to go out for dinner one night, to my surprise I noticed a lump . This was not par t of my plan and not something I had ever seriously thought about at 39 years of age.

After a diagnosis of breast canc er and a mastectomy ( included a reconstruction) and just as I was nearing the end of my course of chemo, a friend who was a BC survivor had a chat with me about going with dragon boating as a sport. I was relatively fit but unable to put my body on the li ne aggressively as I was very protective of my new body pieces.

My friend suggested coming along and giving dragon boating a go with her club’s social team, Amazon Hearts . At practice I was quickly id entified as a BC survivor and never set foot in the social boat. I was whisked into the competitive BC boat - the Abreast of Life team. That was the best thing to happen to me for quite some time .

After the first practice, I was exhausted. I blamed the lack of energy through the chemo treatment, but I suspect that my team was just testing me.

Dragon Boating. " More than a Sport – a Tradition " 30. Dragon Sport News - Emagazine “An Independent Voice for Dragon Boat Sport” September 2019 Autumn Edition

As I became more paddle fit and learned the names of my teammates, I felt a connection that I had not experienced when I had previously participated in the sport . My team has a saying “We are not big on sympathy, but we are huge on empathy”. At my first national regatta, our goal was to win at least one gold medal . My team managed a clean sweep of every division they entered and won all five of their final races ! I have personally yet to meet BC dragon boat teams that are not competitive…do they even exist? At this first Nationals I also experienced my first rose ceremony …oh my! I was totally unprepared for how emotional this would be. I had been warned not to look at a certain member of my team as they always cried. Have no fear, I didn’t look at her, but I suspect I was just as emotional. Three years down the track, I have been diagnosed Stage 4 and the beast has invaded my liver. This diagnosis hit me hard. As a solo mum, whose parents have already passed, I wondered what would happen to my babies? I have an amazing extended family by blood, but I now also have a fantastic extended family by paddling. My kids have gained so many aunties through my sister dragon boaters that I have no fear that they will be well taken care of when I am not here. The competitiveness that we have in our dragon boat team has helped me fight this disease aggressively.

Dragon boating has allowed me to become an international sportsperson after a diagnosis of breast cancer, who has won a host of medals, including a silver at the Club Crew World Championships in Szeged, Hungary, and I have very proudly carried the New Zealand flag across the Ponte Vecchio, Florence into an amazing opening ceremony at the IBCPC festival. BC dragon boating has given me a second family that I love and who I know, very much love me back in bucket loads. Now, I cannot for one minute imagine life without dragon boating, and my teammates .

PINK LIONESS - from Francis Halperin. Pink Sensations, Pickering, Canada. I paddled with and drummed for Israel's only BCS dragon boat team during the Dragon Boat Israel festivals An article about them appeared recently in Yedioth Ahronot weekend edition (Israel's largest daily newspaper). Several members of the team attended the Dragon Boat festival in Barcelona in May of this year. Courage On The Water - Translation of an article in Yedioth Ahronot, 15 th March 2019 They have their team song, energy, pink shirts and a unique bond that only women can understand without words: the pain and the fear of death. THE “PINK LIONESSES” a group of Breast Cancer Survivors from Israel, have recently participated in the yearly Marathon of Aquatic disciplines on the Kinneret. The Kinneret now has a brilliant pink stream of female paddlers, shining in their boats and leaving an impact on the water but their real triumph happens after every training session on Dragon Boats. So what brings together a group of, Muslim women, Kibbutz women, Jewish Orthodox women, and retired women to stressful training on the Kinneret ? Orit Ziv, is a mother of three and grandmother of two. Her younger sister Tali passed away three years ago from BC. Shortly after, Orit felt a lump and understood she was now also a part of the statistics. When she was undergoing painful chemo and radiation therapy, Orit decided to dedicate herself to women who were struck by breast cancer, ovarian cancer and womb cancer. She started a team in memory of her sister. The existence of this team quickly spread all over in various languages: Hebrew, Arabic, Amharic, Russian and above all, the language of the heart, which knows no boundaries or ethnic background. Today Orit, Rubik and Noa have recruited a startling number of 110 paddlers, between ages 28 to 70. (Enough to form 5 Dragon Boat teams). They come to the Kinneret twice or three times a week all year round from all over the country. They attend after radiation treatments, travel by train, bus and car, to meet on the Kinneret shores, where the magic begins…

PINK PADDLERS NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD CANADA ON ICE: Dragon Boats are a familiar sight in the summer in Canada but in February of this year the Wonder- Broads of Windsor-Essex, Ontario spent a chilly weekend in Ottawa, Canada’s capital city, for a different kind of boat race…on ice! The WonderBroads decided to start their season by giving ice dragon boat racing a try at Ottawa’s annual Winterlude festival. It draws athletes from as far as California and Florida. This was the third year of North American ice dragon boat racing. The boat only seats 12, so some WonderBroads joined a different team so that all could get the experience. are equipped with spikes to drag the boats along the ice and the most difficult part is to try and get the boat off the line. After only a 20 minute practice on the ice the WonderBroads gave this ice version their best shot and made the women’s semi finals in the C division! We were also proud to be part of the first ever Inaugural Breast Cancer Survivor Ceremonial Race on Ice. We joined seven survivor teams in this race as we celebrated the determination and spirit that Breast Cancer Survivor teams bring to every race. We were happy to welcome and reunite with members of teams from Ireland and other parts of Canada and the USA.

European up-date From Svenja Franke-Bruhn. AUSTRIA: Vienna Pink Dragons formed in 2015, the first and only pink paddling team in Austria, are members of the IBCPC. Patience and perseverance has seen the group slowly growing and particularly this year with an influx of newbies and potential members as we are now quite well known and accepted in the country. As a young team we have already had our fair share of challenges, the biggest being the loss of our co-founding member Nina Kerres in May 2018. She left us a great present in order to thank the young team for all the help during her illness: a beautiful small dragon boat – in pink of course. She would have been so happy to see our participation in the IBCPC festival in Florence last year. It was a great experience on various levels and for us as a composite team even more so as we were the only team to come first in each heat. Of course it is a participatory festival yet it is such a nice feeling when you cross that line first. SWITZERLAND: Officially there is no pink paddling team yet, at least not enrolled with the IBCPC. There are several plans to start a team and smaller groups are already practising with established dragon- boat teams, but not always under a pink banner. One lady who is a very successful paddler told me she will think about this in more detail once she is not capable anymore to paddle with the national team ! There is a lot of potential there. I am confident Switzerland will see its first pink paddling team in the near future.

GERMANY: The development of pink paddling teams has been very good in recent years. Currently there are 16 established teams and two who are trying to set up a team. This can be challenging in some cities/areas whereas in others it seems relatively easy to acquire new paddlers. Only three teams of the German teams are currently enrolled with the IBCPC: Pin k Paddler Wiesbaden, Ladybugs and Pink Patrol. I am in contact with almost every established team now. They are all well informed about IBCPC and its work. There is also very good news are coming from Pink Dragonistas Hannover, a relatively young, all inclusive team, who have drawn a lot of younger women to their team thanks to other pink activities. They took part together with the Pink ladies from Dresden at the Nationals in Schwerin, Germany last year, where a BCS category was introduced for the first time. Both teams took part in the small boat BCS competition in Sevilla, Spain in July. More teams are now taking part in BCS events abroad, like the Ladybugs who went to Barcelona this year and Pink Patrol to Vienna. One reason behind it is certainly the participation in Florence, so it was really beneficial to have the IBCPC festival in Europe for the first time.

CHILE - Fortale Senos Team

The team Fortale Senos Chile was created in Santiago on the shores of the Carén Lagoon in April 2017. We started our project looking for all kinds of support by visiting clinics, foundations and interviewing with outstanding doctors. in September 2018 we officially became members of the International Breast Cancer Paddlers Commission (IBCPC). Our first Paddle for Life meeting, was such a great success, with an attendance of more than 70 people in all modalities of boating. After a year of hard work spreading the activity continuously the Fortale Senos Chile Team, strengthened and women arrived from all the neighbourhoods of Santiago and the surrounding areas, organized themselves, supported each other, hurriedly searched for their medical certificate authorizing them to paddle and ones that had no authorization arrived to observe.. The project took flight and teams were also formed in other cities , such as Chiloé, Temuco (Temuco already has their Dragon Boat waiting for the survivors), Talca and Viña del Mar. Finally, we just want to tell that these Chilean women are having a really good time, we have big dreams, one of them is to get our dragon boat, to be able to train together, organize the second event of Paddle for Life in October and we want to achieve greater involvement of Chilean women in the International Meeting Latinoamérica en Rosa to be held in Neuquén Argentina in next November. CHINA: Beijing and Shanghai - new BCS teams form. Beijing BCS Dragon Sister Team launched their dragon boat and practiced on the water for the first time at Beijing Yu Yuan Tan Dragon Boat Club, on the 19th May 2019. All of the teams in China will be named “Dragon Sisters” followed by the city or place that they come from so the first team is Dragon Sisters, Beijing. The second , Dragon Sisters, Shanghai, follows in the footsteps of their Beijing Dragon Sisters. This article tells of the Shanghai teams formation. Huddled amidst the bustling Saturday crowd in Shanghai’s Jing An park, 20 women clap as each in turn stands to share their story. One has lived with breast cancer for 23 years, more than one person is now in treatment. Some hug as old friends while others put faces to names they recognize from their shared BCS Wechat group. Together, they represent the first breast cancer survivor (BCS) dragon boat team to emerge in this city of 26 million since 2006. They’ve come to kick the tires on the dragon boat lifestyle they’ve heard so much about. If they like what they see, they could very well make BCS dragon boat history. Twenty-three-year-survivor, Shi Ge tells the group about her experience coaching an earlier BCS dragon boat team in 2004 at the request of a local cancer foundation. In 2006 the team welcomed survivors of other cancers. Ge says she can now see the value of organizing a BCS- only team, and doing so from the bottom up. She is ready to bring her 15+ years of dragon boat coaching to this new Shanghai team. Sport medicine specialist and former Beijing track coach Guang Li shares his views on the benefits of sport and exercise to improve the health of people living with breast cancer, diabetes and other conditions. “Dragon boat lifestyle benefits our emotional as well as our physical health and wellbeing,” says Guoning Liu, whose company has a project helping people with high blood pressure and diabetes to improve their health through sport and exercise. He and Li joined the sport-medicine committee to help organize and support BCS dragon boat teams in Mainland China as part of the Society’s new Awaken the Dragon Sister project.

DENMARK ; Danish Dragon Boat team, from team member Helen. Presenting a project. It is 2017 in early spring in Copenhagen, . A group of women are gathered at a meeting arranged by physiotherapist, PhD Kira Bloomquist. All have had a diagnosis and treatment for breast cancer. Kira started with I would like to present you with a new project to establish the first Danish dragon boat team for breast cancer survivors. The goal is to represent Denmark at IBCPC’s Dragon Boat Event to be held in Florence next summer!” “Would you like to join?” I attended the meeting and there was no doubt, nor hesitation in my mind. YES, I am in ! A few of the women were experienced canoe or kayak paddlers, but we were all new to dragon boating. So, with just a little over a year to prepare the team for Florence, we had to act fast. A breast cancer dragon boat society, Danish Dragon Abreast was founded, and we named our team, Copenhagen Dragon Boat Team. Under the supervision of our team trainers , Kira,Marianne Sonnichsen (a highly skilled physiotherapist) and Flemming Simonsen (our coach on the water) we trained and developed dragon boat skills. Despite the fact that Danes are known for their Viking ships, dragon boating is not common in Denmark and there was no obvious place to go and find a dragon boat ! However, Copenhagen is situated on the water and luckily for us the Copenhagen Rowing Club had some old dragon boats that they generously agreed to let us use.

May 2017 . Finally, the day had arrived for our very first meeting with the dragon boat . I recall my emotions. I was so excited to be part of this project. I took a first glance at the old Dragon Boat. My zodiac sign is Aquarius! Water is my element, but I am not keen on depths or darkness. Honestly, I was terrified and hesitated when told to take a seat. My dear friend looked straight into my eyes, grabbed my hands and ensured me that everything would be fine. I got into the boat. Paddles Up! Ready! The Dragon boat began gliding through the calm water. It was awesome! With my very first stroke, all of my fear disappeared in a split second. In that moment, I knew dragon boating was for me. I was now a Paddler. It would change my life forever

Throughout 2017 we became confident not only with the dragon boat, terms and commands but also with each other. .At the season’s end our training moved back indoors. As a side note, our neighbours from Malmo, Sweden also formed a team shortly after we did. We share a close relationship and enjoy working together in workshops and training sessions.

Spring/summer 2018 . With only a little over two months before the regatta in Florence, our training intensified . The final bits and pieces of organizing our trip fell into place. Sunshine, blue sky and unusually high temperatures up to 30 plus degrees hit Denmark. It was hard to resist a swim after each session in the Dragon boat.

Besides the “The Little Mermaid” we became quite a tourist attraction when paddling through the harbour and the canals of the city. We were also invited to present the team and talk about our participation in Florence on national television. Florence . Words are insufficient to describe the amazing experience of partaking in the IBCPC’s regatta in Florence . The emotions and feelings, well everything, in connection to our participation was unforgettable and will always remain in our hearts. To be part of this unique international community of thousands of women and men is difficult to describe in a few words. We were overwhelmed by the size of this event and so proud to be a part of it. The pinkness is a reminder of the shared experience of breast cancer, but the sensation of being part of it makes you forget the reason that you are there in the first place.

The future. When we started, our main goal was to participate at the event in Florence . However, on the flight back to Copenhagen we knew that we needed to continue with the project. Today there are now 40 members in the team, and the Copenhagen Rowing Club continues to be our base, with the promise of new boats for the coming season. We are looking into the many regattas and events to participate in. We are also trying to build a financial foundation for the team and organization.

IRELAND. BOAT REPAIRS WITH DONEGAL DRAGONS

Our older boat Khalessi is starting to show her age so we’ve had to learn a bit about repairs over the past couple of years. The gel coat can become chipped and cracked and this can allow water to seep into the core of the boat, especially if she’s kept on the water over the summer months as ours are. The outer layer of the boat is the gel coat and this sits on top of a layer of fibreglass matting and then an inner core of foam. If water seeps in over a prolonged period this can lead to osmosis and the gel coat starts to form blisters and peel away from the fibreglass beneath. Small chips and cracks can be fixed using gel coat filler, here’s how ! 1. First sand down the area and open up any blisters . If it’s a big area you may need some expert advice. Check the area underneath is dry. If you have long hair, make sure you tie your hair back – gel coat doesn’t brush out as we discovered last year!!- and wear gloves.

2. You’ll need a screwdriver to get the lid off the tin then take a golf ball sized amount of filler and mix with a 2cm squeeze of hardener - the plastic lid is handy as a mixing surface.

3. Mix well for 2 minutes then use the plastic tool to fill the hole . The mixture hardens within a few minutes so don’t mix too much at a time - its also handy to have a second person with you to spot the areas that need filling ahead of you and check you’ve not missed any bits. (Attaching small sticky labels next to these areas helps too).

4. Once set the repaired area can be sanded back until smooth using 180 grade and then 400 grade wet and dry sandpaper. The area can be buffed to a shine if needed.

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE ICF PRESIDENT JOSE PERURENA-LOPEZ from Mike MacKeddie-Haslam, IDBF Founder & Honorary President . Dear Jose, We have known each other since the early 1970s , when we were the managers of our respective National Canoeing Teams (Great Britain and Spain). We became good friends and remain so today. In those days we discussed ways of making the ICF more attractive, dynamic and more relevant for the paddlers and how to develop ‘canoeing’ in the future.

THE BOAT In Hong Kong races, the hull is usually made from teak, with a dragon’s head and tail made of camphor wood. The development of dragon boat- making is marked by the type of wood used for the main body of the boat: Phase 1 (before 1911): Ge wood imported from Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam Phase 2 (from 1911-the end of 1990s): pine wood imported from the United States Phase 3 (since 2000): cedar wood from China’s Guizhou province

THE POSITIONS

Paddlers in the front are good at keeping time. Out-of-sync blades hit the water a fraction of a second behind each other, creating lag. The back paddlers focus more on power strokes to maintain speed in the faster water.

1. ‘A’ position Turn your back to the water. Reach forward, stretching your arm and back. Place the paddle at the thigh of the paddler in front of you. Lean your body outside the boat, top arm straight, top shoulder over the water. 2. ‘Catch’ and drive Enter the blade fully into the water at an approximate 60-degree angle. Pull and counter rotate with your lower arm, shoulder and back. Drive down aggressively with your top arm.

3. Pull and exit The paddler uses their back muscles to pull the blade parallel with the boat. The exit occurs when the paddle arrives at their hip by lifting their top arm. 4. Recovery The paddle exits the water at the hip, returning to the ‘A’ position by rotating and stretching the bottom arm, shoulder and back. Additionally, paddlers should attempt to transfer their weight onto the blade.

DSN CROSS-OVER CORNER - THE OTHER PERSONS PADDLE. TEAM GERMANY AT THE WORLD CHAMPS

Last Year in Tahiti there were only 4 of us....this year in Mooloolaba, on the Sunshine Coast, in Australia, 13 paddlers from Germany will compete in the 2nd IVF (International Va’a Federation) Long Distance World Champs !!

What is so unique about it ? We do not know each other or have ever even paddled together !!! Living in 7 different countries over 4 different continents, we will come together for our first training session, just f our days before the Masters 50+ men's race and 6 days before the Elite Women's race.!!!

Follow us and see how we go! We may even recruit some more paddlers for next years Sprints in Hilo

24 HOUR RELAY RECORD DRAGON BOAT CHALLENGE

28 / 29 SEPTEMBER 2019 - CALDECOTTE LAKE , Milton Keynes, England (just off the M1 motorway)

SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT !

WORLD RECORD ATTEMPT - FOR THREE CREWS ONLY.

Interested in the challenge? Please read on…..

I AM RAISING A TEAM TO TAKE THE WORLD RECORD FOR THE MAX DISTANCE TRAVELLED BY A DRAGON BOAT IN 24 HOURS. I need SIXTY EXCELLENT PADDLERS and THREE EXCELLENT HELMS.

I was in the World relay record crew in 2017. We achieved 266 Km . THAT WAS GOOD BUT NOT REALLY HARD ENOUGH.

• This time we need to average 12 K mph paddling 90 mins on & 180 mins off. • This will not be for everybody so we are not inviting everybody - just the finest and most resilient, team focused paddlers around.

 Money raised will go to Action 4 Youth & the Rubinstein Taybi Support (RTS) Group .

• There is a good deal of organising, permissions, licenses etc. I am dealing with that. I need to identify the crew (& reserves) So have a think (as fast as you paddle, in fact!) IT IS NOT TOO LATE TO TAKE UP THE CHALLENGE !

This will be a BIG deal and you may end up with a World Record.. It is worth metioning  that we are going for THE RECORD. We are not planning a record attempt :-)

 PLEASE CONTACT. Tim (+44) (0)7811 449133
