This is the third edition of this manual and while there are a number of improvements from previous editions, over 90% of the material remains the same as the 2002 edition. The content will continue to evolve to conform to the Coaching Association of Canada’s Competency Based Education Theory (CBET). You will quickly find out that this manual is not a recipe book for paddling workouts. Instead, this manual will teach you how to design and create your own workouts that are unique to you and prepared for your team’s needs. Instead of a becoming a “line cook” type of coach, you will become a coaching “chef”. In our attempt to be as complete a coaching education program as possible, we have addressed Dragon Boat paddling as a team sport accessible to people from every corner of our community. Some of these will require different approaches in your coaching. The material we have collected in this manual is used by the following teams; • Mixed teams (12 men and 8 • Seniors (55 and over), women), • Special populations • Women only, o Cancer survivors, • Men only, o Major organ transplant • Juniors (18 and under), recipients, and o Visually impaired individuals. A good coaching manual and coaching course is never complete. We anticipate that regular updates will be produced to keep your manual as current as possible with the latest Dragon Boat coaching knowledge made available from across Canada. While we have tried to keep the content of the manual fairly simple, we are aware that there will always be questions and clarifications needed by someone, somewhere. If you come across a section that you feel needs more, or less information, please give us some feedback! Any questions and comments can be directed to Alan [email protected] Dragon Boat Technical Manual: basic instructor Alan Carlsson ©2007 Basic Instruction Module Page 3 Dragon Boat Technical Coaching Manual DRAGON BOAT CANADA COACHING CERTIFICATION PROGRAM In Canada, sport coaching certification programs are often under the umbrella of the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP). Until Dragon Boat paddling is fully integrated into the Canadian paddling and sports community, this program is designed to dovetail into the NCCP certification process with respect to both coaching levels and the certification process itself. The newly developed NCCP Competency Based Education Training (CBET) model has three key improvements that are being made to the program include: • Placing a greater emphasis on coach abilities; certification will be based on a proven ability "DO" versus simply "KNOW" • A structure for the program that is able to accommodate differences between sports, types of coaches, and environments in which coaches work • Coach training and certification that is based on the needs of the participants and is as experiential as possible To facilitate the training and certification of coaches the CBET model recognizes three different coaching routes; • Community Sport NOTE: The is no Community Sport Coaching route for Dragon Boat due to the inherent risks, specialized equipment and costs needed for the sport. • Instruction • Competition Community Sport Route Coaches in this stream often become involved because their children participate in the sport. They are involved on a purely volunteer basis, often on a short-term or transient basis. Community coaches: • Foster the love of sport within a fun and safe environment • Promote participation and encourage participants regardless of ability level • Foster the acquisition of basic skills through a variety of games/activities • Coach in recreational or local programs featuring low-level competitions • Usually coach once or twice a week for an hour or so (this can vary from sport to sport). The community sport stream does not apply to sports wherein: • There is a significant element of risk inherent to the sport or to the sport environment • Specialized facilities and/or equipment are required for participation in the sport Dragon Boat Technical Manual: basic instructor Alan Carlsson ©2007 Dragon Boat Technical Coaching Manual Basic Instruction Module Page 4 • Skill demonstrations are important to promote learning • A person new to the sport and with no background in it could not realistically be expected to be put in charge of a group of children after one or two days of training As such, there is no Community Sport Coaching route for Dragon Boat. Instruction Route Coaches in this stream are expected to be proficient in the teaching of sport- specific skills, and are often former participants in the sport. They must be able to plan for and manage the risks inherent to the sport and manage and fit the specialized equipment required for participation. Because of these expectations, specialized training is necessary for coaches in this stream, whether they are working with beginner or advanced skill levels. They are therefore not considered community coaches even though they coach in programs offered in the communities. Instruction coaches: • Coach in specialized facilities, or in an environment that poses a significant element of risk • Teach sport-specific skills, and are often required to provide demonstrations of these skills • Emphasize safety and technical precision in teaching skills • Coach primarily in a non-competitive, or recreational context • Coach participants of various proficiency levels and of all ages At the majority of Dragon Boat clubs, instructional education is the largest coaching resource needed. Beginners Goals of participation: Fun, fitness, fundamentals, skill development primarily Frequency of participation: 1-2 times per week Level of competition: Community or none Proficiency level: Getting started in the sport, acquiring basic skills Age of participants: Children to adults Stage in athlete development: FUNdamentals Intermediate Performers Goals of participation: Fun, fitness, skill development primarily Frequency of participation: 1-3 times per week Level of competition: Community, Regional or none Proficiency level: Consolidating basic skills and acquiring advanced skills Age of participants: Children to adults Dragon Boat Technical Manual: basic instructor Alan Carlsson ©2007 Basic Instruction Module Page 5 Dragon Boat Technical Coaching Manual Stage in athlete development: No stage (Working primarily on skills, little emphasis on other areas of athlete development) Advanced Performers Goals of participation: Fun, fitness, skill development primarily Frequency of participation: 2-4 times per week Level of competition: Community, Regional, National or none Proficiency level: Consolidating and refining advanced skills Age of participants: Children to adults Stage in athlete development: No stage (Working primarily on skills, little emphasis on other areas of athlete development) Competition Route Coaches in this stream generally have prior coaching experience or are former athletes in the sport. They coach both to improve skill proficiency and to improve performance in competition. They work to develop athletes over the long term, according to the sport's athlete development model. The tough decision to not stage this popular event was made by festival organizers to ensure the safety of everyone involved. Though things are opening up, the RI Chinese Dragon Boat Races & Taiwan Day Festival is confined to Festival Pier along the waterfront. To provide the exciting event fans have come accustomed to, there is virtually no room to allow for adequate spacing of the dozens of teams that come from around the Northeast and thousands of spectators. “‘Safety first’ is our guidance while enjoying the rivers of Rhode Island” states Blackstone Valley Tourism Council President, Bob Billington. “With COVID-19 still a factor we need to stay extra vigilant.” Pawtucket Mayor, Donald R. Grebien comments, “while it is very unfortunate that the event has been postponed to next year, I thank the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council and the festival organizers for prioritizing the safety of our community.” The unique style of this race’s boats also created a challenge as the sheer size of these 50 ft and 30 ft vessels make it extremely difficult to move and maneuver with a reduced number of paddlers, which is recommended per dragon boat race guidance. Matt Robert, race official and owner of 22Dragons says, “the dragon boats used at the races in Pawtucket are just too big to move properly with the amount of paddlers when considering all current COVID-19 requirements.

    Lake Champlain Dragon Boat Festival Dragon Boat Paddling Tips Dragon boating is a full-body workout. By no means are you just sitting up straight and paddling with your arms. There are six key parts to the dragon boat stroke. When done properly, the boat flies. When executed improperly, the boat feels sluggish and heavy. The six components are called: rotation, extension, catch, pull, exit, and recovery. ROTATION OR TWIST: Plant your feet against the strut in the boat so that you can engage your legs. Engage your core muscles as you twist to turn your chest toward your partner. As you rotate, your outside hip moves forward and your back turns toward the shore. This twist allows for maximum reach. EXTENSION OR REACH: This position in the stroke is crucial to maximize the length of the stroke. The position of the outside paddling arm is equivalent to pulling a bow and arrow. The outside shoulder should be dropped slightly while extending forward. Your torso bends forward for additional extension. The upper arm should rise up to about your ear. The lower arm is fully extended and is almost locked at the elbow. The paddle should be a few inches above the water before driving it into the water. CATCH: The catch phase is the most critical to the speed of the boat. The catch is the moment the paddle blade first hits the water. The top hand is held over the water. It then presses down on the paddle while the outside arm is relaxed and fully extended. PULL: But not with your arms! Once the paddle is fully submerged or "buried,” the next part of the stroke is the pull phase.
