The Divine Office Chapter 8 121 The Divine Office of Saint Kuriakose Elias Chavara Conclusion 143 Bibliography 147 THEOLOGICAL STUDIES ON SAINT CHAVARA Saint Kuriakose Elias Chavara (1805-1871) – a Carmelite religious priest and a professor of theology (Malpan) in the Syro-Malabar Church, who pioneered consecrated life in the Indian Church by founding the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI; in collaboration with Thomas Palackal and Thomas Porukara, in 1831), the first indigenous religious congregation for men and the Congregation of the Mother of Carmel (CMC; in collaboration with Leopold Beccaro OCD, in 1866) – is widely recognized for his pioneering efforts to reform the Church in Kerala and the society of the nineteenth century. His credible Christian witness along with the leadership he offered to the Church of Saint Thomas Christians, at a time when it was passing through multiple jurisdictional crises, scripted a spiritual and disciplined growth in the Kerala Church. Canonized on 23 November 2014, Saint Chavara’s personal sanctity and Christian wisdom are identified to be unique. While the secular society admires his contributions in pioneering a set of revolutionary changes in uplifting people on the margins and those who were socially ostracised through educational and social initiatives, the fundamental core of all his achievements is solidly established in his filial discipleship of Jesus Christ, whom he addressed ‘ente nalla appa’ (my beloved father). Saint Chavara had a firm foundation in Christian faith, which is clearly visible throughout his life and it is testified by those who knew him. He articulated his views and perspectives primarily based on his personal encounter with Jesus and also based on is readings and theological reflections. They are available to us through his extant writings, which are published in four volumes in the Complete Works of Kuriakose Elias Chavara. Some of these works, recognized as pioneering vii viii Chavara: The Wise Liturgical Reformer efforts in Indian literary genre, offer us a mine of rich and sound theological insights. Although his access to scientific Christian literature was minimal (if not completely absent), his writings draw from the biblical as well as other Christian traditions, which he had faithfully and creatively interpreted for the enhancement of the faith life of the Christian community that he had catered to throughout his life. Theological Studies on Saint Chavara – a joint effort of the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI) and Congregation of the Mother of Carmel (CMC) – attempts to promote and publish fruits of scientific investigation into the unique and varied theological insights of Saint Chavara in the form of monographs. These theological investigations will be instru- mental in appreciating and popularising the sound and solid theological contributions he made to enhance Catholic faith in the nineteenth century, which, in turn, indicate that he deserves titles like ‘Father of the Syro-Malabar Church’ and ‘Doctor of the Church’. As the publication of this series is undertaken with the blessings of the Synod of the Syro- Malabar Archiepiscopal Church, which also had benefitted from the eminent theological acumen, pastoral insights, and ecclesiastical leadership of Saint Chavara, these studies would bring to light the multifarious theological heritage that he had bequeathed to the Church and the subsequent generations of faithful in India. In the liturgy, God is praised and glorified by signs perceptible to the senses. Perceptible means that whatever signs and symbols used in the liturgy must be intelligible to people. People must understand it and, with its help, they must participate in the liturgy wholeheartedly. At the same time, the liturgy guarantees the sanctification of the humans, because, in every liturgy, the mystery of Christ is established in the present circumstances. Saint Kuriakose Elias Chavara Chavara (1805-1871) was an ecclesiastical luminary in the horizon of the Malabar Church of Thomas Christians in the nineteenth century. When he was the Vicar General, he steadily revised the liturgy in view of awakening the sacramental life of the clergy and the people, and thereby ensuring a spiritual renewal within the Church. He wrote Thukasa to keep an order in the celebration of the Eucharistic Liturgy; in addition, he compiled the Divine Office for the clergy and religious, formed a new liturgical calendar for the use of Thomas Christians and so on. Thus, with the help of confreres of his own Congregation, he made a renewal in the liturgical life of his Church. Regarding the revision of the liturgical texts he left no stones unturned, he passed through all the liturgical books of the Malabar Christians of the nineteenth century. Nobody has made any attempt to study the liturgical contributions of Saint Chavara to the Malabar Church; hence, the relevance of this work in which an attempt is made in the area. The present volume has two parts: the first part gives a glimpse of the liturgical contributions of Saint Chavara. He ix x Chavara: The Wise Liturgical Reformer was a wise reformer in the sense that the Saint deeply understood that liturgy is the “the celebration of the Mystery of Christ” by which the salvation of the world is established in the present context. Chavara was not at all a professional theologian in the liturgical field. The second part includes the study of Thukasa in detail, focusing on the celebration of the Divine Liturgy. The Saint concentrated on the way of celebration of the Christ Mystery rather than the theology of the liturgy. Secondly, the Saint compiled the Divine Office of the Thomas Christians from the available sources in Malabar. That was a major contribution of the Saint to Thomas Christians. But his efforts were only partly successful because only a portion of his work came to light. By the reform of the liturgy, the Saint gave a thrust to the clergy and the people to invigorate their sacramental life. Feast of Saint Chavara Francis Kanichikattil CMI 3 January 2020 Thrissur INTRODUCTION Christian faith was brought to India at a very early period. The firm tradition of the Church is that Apostle Thomas preached the Good News to the people of India, especially in the South-West coast (Kerala) in the first century. Although difficulty still exists regarding the documentary evidence of the apostolate of Saint Thomas in India, there is a solid body of scholarly opinion that the foundation of Christianity in India was laid by Apostle Thomas. A good number of studies, both by Indian and foreign scholars, give us a comprehensive picture of the issue. The early Christians who received the faith from Saint Thomas were called ‘Thomas Christians’ and the religion they practised came to be known as the ‘Way of Thomas’, Thoma Margam by others. Saint Thomas founded seven communities (churches) at different parts of Kerala, and today these churches are well known pilgrim centres, and the tomb of Saint Thomas is situated at Mylapore Cathedral.

In the Novellae Constitutiones added to his code Justinian stipulated that there were to be forty deaconesses assigned to the Hagia Sophia:2 Wherefore We order that not more than sixty priests, a hundred deacons, forty deaconesses, ninety sub-deacons, a hundred and ten readers, or twenty-five choristers, shall be attached to the Most Holy Principal Church, so that the entire number of most reverend ecclesiastics belonging thereto shall not exceed four hundred and twenty in all, without including the hundred other members of the clergy who are called porters.

These elements include the essential architectural components of the complex, such as the atrium, narthex, and the baptistery, as well as liturgical remains such as the bema and solea. An account is given of the form and function of both the baptistery structure and the baptismal font, with consideration of how their forms reflect the rites and practice of baptism in the early Church. Attention is also given to the form and iconography of the mosaic decoration, including the two Greek inscriptions. The article concludes with thoughts on the future conservation of the site. Essex Assistant Professor of Bible Exposition The relevance of the book of Revelation to the issue of the timing of the rapture is unquestioned. Assumptions common to many who participate in discussing the issue include the authorship of the book by John the apostle, the date of its writing in the last decade of the first century A.D., and the book’s prophetic nature in continuation of OT prophecies related to national Israel. Ten proposed references to the rapture in Revelation include Rev 3:10-11; 4:1-2; 4:4 and 5:9-10; 6:2; 7:9-17; 11:3-12; 11:15-19; 12:5; 14:14-16; and 20:4. An evaluation of these ten leads to Rev 3:10-11 as the only passage in Revelation to speak of the rapture. Rightly understood, that passage implicitly supports a pretribulational rapture of the church. That understanding of the passage fits well into the context of the message to the church at Philadelphia. * * * * * “As the major book of prophecy in the NT, Revelation has great pertinence to discussion of the rapture.”1 Participants in the discussion concerning the timing of the rapture would concur with this statement. Proponents of a pretribulational, midtribulational, pre-wrath, and posttribulational rapture all seek support for their positions in the book of Revelation.2 Many suggestions as to where Revelation 1Robert H. Rome – 1963 FOREWORD ------------------ In the last two decades, the Holy See assumed, in a practical and effective manner, the legislative authority for liturgical matter in the Ukrainian Catholic Church. In 1941 it promulgated a liturgikon for the Ruthenians. This was followed by an Ordo Celebrationis (in 1944), which spelled out in greater detail the manner of celebrating the Divine Liturgy, matins and vespers. Other service books followed. 1 Again, Pope Pius XII, in 1957, promulgated his Motu Proprio, Clergi Sanctitati, in which he clearly defined, what had been already established for the Latin Church in the Code of Canon Law, namely, that the supreme liturgical authority in the Eastern rites is the Holy See. The latter fact defined what the Holy See already enjoyed. But it was the first explicit law which established the fact that the liturgical authority for the Oriental rites is the Holy Father. Previously, some moral or physical person was responsible for any new liturgical laws and authentic interpretation thereof. It is our aim in this dissertation to determine who the traditional legislator is, not for all Oriental rites, but specifically for the Byzantine-Ukrainian rite. Furthermore, our scope will be to demonstrate the different stages in which the Holy See has appeared as the supreme liturgical legislator, using the liturgical history of the Ukrainian Church as our basis.

Historical Introduction. 124 The Laodicea at which the Synod met is Laodicea in Phrygia Pacatiana, also called Laodicea ad Lycum, and to be carefully distinguished from the Laodicea in Syria. This much is certain, but as to the exact date of the Synod there is much discussion. Peter de Marca fixed it at the year 365, 199 NPNF (V2-14) Philip Schaff but Pagi in his Critica on Baronius’s Annals172 seems to have overthrown the arguments upon which de Marca rested, and agrees with Gothofred in placing it circa 363.

    Alexei LIDOV BYZANTINE CHURCH DECORATION AND THE GREAT SCHISM OF 1054 * in Byzantion, LXVIII/2 (1998), pp.381-405 We can hardly overestimate the importance of changes that befell Byzantine church decoration in the 11th and 12th centuries--the time when a system was symbolically centered round the "Communion of the Apostles" above the altar. Despite age-old additions, it survived as the basis of the Orthodox Christian iconographic program. No less importantly, it was this new system that determined the disagreement in principles which made the Western Catholic and Eastern Orthodox traditions of church decorations part ways. The link between iconographic novelties and the liturgy has been amply demonstrated in scholarly literature1. Among the first was A. Grabar's work about the Jerusalem liturgical scroll2. G. Babic's article about the Officiating Bishops as connected with the Christological polemics of the 12th century notably influenced her researcher colleagues3. Chr. Walter's book Art and Ritual of the Byzantine Church4 offered a system of liturgical themes. A number of authors brought out and analyzed a range of iconographic themes and motifs to be explained by the contemporaneous liturgical context. Among these, we can single out studies of the image of Christ as the Man of Sorrows5, the Lamentation scene6, the particular iconographic types of Christ the High Priest consecrating the Church and Christ the Priest7. In fact, every serious study of an 11th or 12th century monument adds something new to our knowledge of the liturgical influences on church decoration. The new liturgical themes came down to us in non-contemporaneous monuments of the 11th and 12th centuries.

The student body is divided into several teams of six to eight people who are responsible in rotation for planning most of a week’s liturgies. Much of our energy goes into choosing hymns because, in Anglican tradition, the themes of the readings and seasons historically have been reflected in hymnody, whether in informal hymn-singing before and after services in early Anglicanism, when only the liturgical texts in The Book of Common Prayer were sung during the service, or in the later hymns of Isaac Watts and the Wesleyan revival.
