Soon after arriving in the United States, the family returned to its meat cutting and grocery roots, opening the first Bende store in Chicago’s Burnside neighborhood. Sev- eral stores followed, as did a reputation for preparing out- standing smoked meats. While we have grown and adopted new technologies, we still use the original old world recipes carried from Hungary by our grandfather. You Know You're Hungarian... 1. When you use sour cream more than ketchup. 2. When your parents come to visit for 3 weeks and you all stay in a one bedroom apartment. 3. When feeding your guests is your main priority even if they claim they're not hungry and in which case you get slightly offended/upset that they don't want your hospitality. 4. When someone says that Hungarian "is like Russian and all those other Slavic languages," and then you have to go into great detail about the origins of Hungarian with a scolding history lesson. 5. When Paprika is just as important as salt & pepper on the table & in food. 6. When you know what Unicum is and prefer it over Jagermeister. 7. When it's shocking for you to realize that TV channels of foreign countries don't broadcast full live coverage of kayak-canoe and water polo world championships in prime time. 8. When you tell someone that you are Hungarian, they ask "Are you hungry?" Then you congratulate them on being the millionth person to say that to you. 9. Welcome to the 36th International Festival - 60 years of ISB ISB is celebrating its 60th anniversary and would like to, in association with the Family Association, extend a warm welcome to the 36th Annual International Festival. Our diverse school community is very proud of this major event. This is an opportunity for countries and cultures to come together to share with one another and to have a great day of fun. Doors open at 10:00 but at 10:45 our Director Kevin Bartlett, will officially open the Festival, followed by the Parade of Nations at 11:00. Outside and in the Gyms you will find around30 country booths representing 57 countries selling fabulous food and products unique to their own countries and cultures. There will be experiences for all tastes and ages! Children are well catered for with ‘Plate Painting’, other activities, and a resident clown roaming about! Entertainment this year will be on the stage in the Drama Studio (formerly Annex). An amazing variety of performers have signed up so be sure to pop in! The full schedule can be found later in this programme. Take the opportunity to peruse the non-country booths as well! There will be several including: The Jane Goodall institute, The Board of Trustees, Kattenberg Krafts, and more! The popular Used Book Sale will be found outdoors in the Tent Village this year. -

While much progress has been made toward ending the pandemic, we all still need to be cautious in our daily lives and we must each do our part to prevent further outbreaks. We encourage all our members and friends to please get vaccinated and continue to follow any local, state and federal protocols. With each of us doing our part, we can hasten a return to our normal routines. Fortunately, the situation has progressed to the point where we believe we can safely return to enjoying many of our favorite WPA activities. After much discussion, and based on the latest guidelines from the government and health experts, the WPA Board of Directors is pleased to announce the following: • Branch meetings are now permissible, according to local and state guidelines on holding gatherings; allow for social distancing and wear masks, if required. • Branches are also permitted to host a branch family Christmas party in 2021, again being sure to follow local and state guidelines on conducting such gatherings. • Branch election of officers will not be held in 2021. As you may be aware, elec- tions were scheduled to be held in late 2020, but the Board postponed those elec- tions and requested that the current branch officers remain in place until further notice. -

V4 Competition Conference Tourist Information From the airport After arriving at Liszt Ferenc International Airport the easiest way to get into the city is to take a taxi. For other options (public transportation, shuttle mini bus) please check the airport’s homepage. From the airport only take FŐTAXI. When you arrive in Budapest, you do not need to call a taxi, just look for the Főtaxi booth, which is located outside of the entrance. There you should tell give your destination and you will receive a voucher with the price and destination on it. From the airport to anywhere in the city centre area of Budapest the trip should cost you around 8,000-9,000 HUF (26-30 euro). BE CARAEFUL there are SCAM TAXI DRIVERS at the airport and they will charge you a lot more, so ensure that you only use the Főtaxi kiosk. Taxi Taxis in Budapest are cheaper when you call them than if you stop them on the street or let a hotel or restaurant call them for you. You can call any of the numbers below. All of these companies should speak English. Most of the cars take credit cards but ask in advance. A non- obligatory tip of about 10-15% is usual (as in the case of other services).
