Si toi and Si oi-akek as immigrants acquire land from the government that now controls the land. The desire to have the land in the nuclear family has been going on with the purchase, even though most of the land is communal property. Hammons Recent studies in the anthropology of mobility tend to privilege the cultural imaginaries in which human movements are embedded rather than the actual, physical movements of people through space. This article offers an ethnographic case study in which ‘imagined mobility’ is limited to people who are not mobile, who are immobile or sedentary and thus reflects a ‘sedentarist metaphysics’. The case comes from the island of Siberut, the largest of the Mentawai Islands off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, where government modernisation programs in the second half of the twentieth century focused on relocating clans from their ancestral lands to model, multi-clan villages and on converting people from the indigenous religion to Christianity.

On this vast landscape live A innumerable communities and societies which modernity has compressed, for better or worse, into nation-states. Indonesia is one such nation-state, the largest archipelago in the world, consisting of thousands of islands - major islands, such as Sumatra, Java and Kalimantan, middle-sized islands such as the Moluccas, and a coterie of islands from Bali east of Java to West Timor above Australia. There are more than three hundred ethnic groups in Indonesia, each with its own language. Such linguistic differences mirror the diversity in history, customs and traditions of the people inhabiting the archipelago. 1 The ending of fifty years of dictatorship and imposed 'nationhood' in 1998 made this diversity a major issue in present-day Indonesia, not least in the local conflicts which erupted. In this article my argument is that it is essential to recognize indigenous cultural values and their interaction as the route to local harmony and conflict resolution in a society as complex as Indonesia. In Asia religion is rooted in the belief that life is part of a cosmic order; the transcendent and the immanent are inseparable. The ethics of community life is derived from such a spirituality. A brief historical sketch will set the scene. Studies of the people's life in the archipelago prior to centuries of colonization are still in their infancy. However, the arrivals of the Portuguese, Chinese, Gujaratis, Persians, Dutch and Japanese left considerable marks on the lives of the indigenous people.

The islands are a district in the West Sumatra province with an area of 6,011 square km, and a coastal line of 1,402 km. There are four main islands, Siberut (the largest island), Sipora, Pagai Utara, and Pagai Selatan Islands, and other 98 smaller islands, which are administratively divided into 10 sub-districts and 43 villages.     ONLY IN MENTAWAI Unique Primate Vocalisations and Songs in an Isolated Indonesian Island Group [Received 28th November 2016; accepted 29th July 2017 – DOI: 10.21463/shima.11.2.10] Linda Burman-Hall University of California, Santa Cruz <[email protected]> ABSTRACT: Biogeographical isolation has produced a unique rainforest biome and indigenous culture in Mentawai. While its huge surf is famous worldwide, Mentawai’s ecology and peoples remain comparatively unstudied. Alhough Mentawai evolved almost as many endemics as the Galápagos, its hunter-horticulturalists are surprisingly unrelated to Sumatran peoples. This study explores gibbon vocalisations and traditional animist beliefs and songs about gibbons and other primates in Mentawai’s three southern islands and makes a case to document and preserve this intangible cultural heritage. The most important of Mentawai's six endemic primates is the Kloss’s gibbon (Hylobates klossii, locally called bilou), a small, black, monogamous, singing ape. The bilou plays a significant role in the traditional animist cosmology of Mentawai: simultaneously considered a changeling human, a rainforest spiritual guardian and a resource for shamanic healing, at times the bilou spirit can also be an evil trickster or harbinger of death. Deep in the rainforests, mated female bilou sing solo or “duet” melodiously with each other along mutual territorial boundaries. While deforestation and modern hunting endanger all Mentawai primates, humans still imitate the bilou, and elderly (Si)Kerei (shaman) again can perform the endangered animist heritage of bilou songs. Tattoos in Mentawai: Markers of Identity and Contemporary Art Maskota Delfi Andalas University Abstract Regional autonomy in Indonesia has provided a new space for communities, catalyzing in a revival of local customs infused with ideas of communities’ youths and elders. Since the archipelago of Mentawai broke away from the mainland district in the province of West Sumatra fourteen years ago, it has charted its own course as an independent district in which island tradition has been emphasized. The cultural revival has ranged from increased interest in traditional foods such as taro and sago, to the crafting of new umas (longhouses), and also a renewed interest in traditional tattoos. However, modernity is not abandoned; for many it remains a main part of life, and the traditional tattoos designs are considered by many youths and tourists as a form of trendy body art. This paper shows how, in Mentawaian tradition, tattoos were crafted on the skin foremost as an identity marker acknowledging local and individual identity. The youths who had proven their worthiness in tasks of bravery, such as on hunting and food gathering trips, were urged by others in the uma to make their mark and prepare for their tattoo ritual in the years long gone past.
