Váš v Sládkovičovezáujem a samotná účasť dokazuje potre- bu stretávať sa, vymieňať si nové poznatky, skúsenosti a potvrdzuje zmysluplnosť vyučo- vania na tomto hudobnom nástroji. Despite cultural and political oppression, Ukraine experienced periods of artistic flurry, notably in the 1920s and the post-Khrushchev “Thaw” of the 1960s. During these exciting and experimental times, a greater number of substantial works for violin began to appear. The purpose of the paper is one of recovery, showcasing the cornerstone works of the Ukrainian violin repertoire. An exhaustive history of this repertoire does not yet exist in any language; this is the first resource in English on the topic. This paper aims to fill a void in current scholarship by recovering this substantial but neglected body of works for the violin, through detailed discussion and analysis of selected foundational works of the Ukrainian violin repertoire. Focusing on Maxym Berezovs´kyj, Mykola Lysenko, Borys Lyatoshyns´kyj, Valentyn Sil´vestrov, and Myroslav Skoryk, I will discuss each composer's life, oeuvre at large, and influences, followed by an in-depth discussion of his specific cornerstone work or works. I will also include cultural, musicological, and political context when applicable. Each chapter will conclude with a discussion of the reception history of the work or works in question and the influence of the composer on the development of violin writing in Ukraine.

Kotlyarevsky, Ukraine ABSTRACT: The article is devoted to the theme of stylistic allusions in the piano composition called "Eleven Etudes in the Form of Ancient Dances" created by Viktor Kosenko – the Ukrainian composer of the first half of the 20th century. An overview of musicological research devoted to this cycle has been given. The emphasis is placed on V. Kosenko's pianism and the uniqueness of the composition in the history of Ukrainian piano music. We have presented the structure and dramaturgy analysis of the cycle "Eleven Etudes in the Form of Ancient Dances" which is based on an ancient dance suite of the Baroque period. Stylistic allusions in each etude-dance, embodied through texture, tonality, melodic-harmonic inversions, have been revealed. The connection of V. Kosenko's composition with the traditions of Ukrainian music of the 19th century, neoclassical tendencies of Western European art of the 20s-30s of the 20th century and the situation of postmodernism at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries is emphasized. President Petro Poroshenko stated: “This is a disaster and a tragedy for Ukraine. This is more evidence after the MH17 plane, after the many civilian casualties – it is a crime that terrorists from the so-called DNR and LNR [Donetsk and Luhansk peoples’ republics] have severely violated my peace plan, which was approved and support- ed by the European Council and the European Union.” It was yet more evidence also that the ceasefire agreed to in Minsk in September of 2014 was being violated almost daily.
