The effect of bottle shapes on mould openings

ottles can have a myri- ad of shapes and geometries. The needs Bof clients are those of new shapes of containers to reach the interest of the market. Starting from this consideration, mould designers need to study and obtain series of moulds that can provide creativity, and give an important contribution to the development of graphical art.

Moulds with two- and three- part openings Most bottles are made using moulds with two-part openings: round bottles obviously, but also bottles with rectangular and simi- lar geometrical sections. For bottles with highly elaborate shapes and sec- four-parts, so as to avoid interference between the tions, such as for example, diamond-decorated sur- glass and the mould in the opening phases (see dia- faces, engraved patterns or just triangular sections, it mond-decorated bottle sketch on Page 55). is necessary to create a mould with three- or even In this article, we will look at a bottle with a trian-

gular section with which it is neces- sary to use a mould holder on which to position the three-part opening mould.

Triangular-shaped bottles Triangular-shaped bottles have been produced using moulds with two-part openings without considering the extremely evident line of conjunc- tion of the same moulds. The conjunction line on the centre of the opening side of the blank mould may not be very evident (see Figure 1), due to the extension of the parison of glass during final blowing, this line could disappear in the blow mould if the conditions of the corners of the mould maintain their shape. Figure 2 shows the blow mould open in two parts seen from above. FIGURE 3 The dotted line delimits the internal section with the impression of the bot- tle, where the conjunction can clearly be seen at the centre of the wall. If the angles of the blank moulds and blow moulds become worn dur- ing opening due to the contact of the glass as well as by normal polish- ing operations of maintenance, it can result in a considerably evident line on the glass, caused by the

rounded corners. These bottles would certainly not be very elegant in appearance.

Using blow mould holders In order to solve this problem it is advisable to use blow mould holders, which open the moulds in three parts and are the best solution to obtain the three sides without unsightly lines (Figure 3). The conjunction lines are camouflaged in the corners of the mould during opening, as can be seen in cutaway view, giving the sides of the bot- tle an integral appearance. Articles entirely covered with engravings or dia- mond-cut decorations need this type of mould holder that opens in three parts. If we consider a bottle with triangular sections and straight sides, we can see that the blow mould opens in three parts without difficulty (Figure 5), but in the blank mould there is an interference between the mould and the glass (Figure 4) causing defects FIGURE 6 on the glass. Diamond During opening, the mould presses on the glass decorated bottle and is therefore obliged to make a radical move- ment that causes the interference with the glass pari- son because of its straight wall. Roberto Reverberi The mould designer is therefore obliged to design Consulting Engineer for Glassworks the section of the parison with rounded sides in order to avoid this interference. ■ E-mail: [email protected]
