Bixler-Márquez·· RESUMEN El presente estudio se realizó para determinar el grado de estabilidad de bilingüismo (alemán-español) en dos comunidades en Chihuahua, México. La comunidad de la colonia Capulín fue seleccionada porque era representativa de los grupos menonitas más fundamentalistas y conservadores. Un grupo antiguamente menonita en la colonia Swift Cmrent se seleccionó para la contrastaci6n, debido al proceso de aculturaci6n y modernidad que experimentaba. Una encuesta por hogar, entrevistas y prolongadas observaciones, permitieron identificar las características sociolingflísticas dentro de los patrones sociales de las dos comunidades. Unicamente los usos y patrones lingflísticos más obvios revelados en la encuesta son incluidos como reportes preliminares. Se concluye que la. comunidad fundamentalista de la colonia CapulÚl posee un bilingüismo estable, mientras que el otro grupo de la colonia Swift Current más bien se podría definir como de bilingüismo transicional. ABSTRACT This study was conducted to determine the level and degree of stability of bilingualism (German-Spanish) in two German cornmunities in Chihuahua, México. The cornmunity of Colonia CapulÚl was selected because it was represen­ tative of the most fundamental and conservative Mennonite groups. A former Mennonite group in Colonia Swift Current was selected to provide a contrast because it was undergoing asignificantdegreeof acculturationandmodernization. • Funding for this study was provided by tbe Center for Inter-Arnerican and Border Studie. at tbe University of Texas at El Paso.     THE END OF CASAS GRANDES Paper presented to the symposium titled The Legacy of Charles C. Di Peso: Fifty Years after the Joint Casas Grandes Project at the 73rd annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology Vancouver, Canada March 27, 2008 Abstract. Charles Di Peso believed that Paquimé, the primary center of the Casas Grandes culture, succumbed to an attack in A.D. 1340. He further argued that the culture survived in the Sierra Madre, where it was encountered by early Spanish military adventurers. Other reviews of the data have come to different conclusions. In this essay I examine and discuss the available chronometric data. This is a revised draft (July 8, 2009). Please check with the author before citing. Corrections and other suggestions for improvement are welcome. David A. As of that year, beyond question, the Casas Grandes culture no longer existed. Based on tree-ring evidence, in 1338 the culture was thriving. Whatever happened to the culture, it must have happened during the intervening 325 years. The purpose of this essay is to once again guess when the Casas Grandes culture came to and end. Whether we utilize history or archaeology, our starting point for any examination of the problem is the enduring scholarship of Charles Di Peso. Historical Evidence The new colony at Casas Grandes was not an isolated incident.

B.O.C. 2016 136(4) New distributional and temporal bird records from Chihuahua, Mexico by Israel Moreno-Contreras, Fernando Mondaca, Jaime Robles-Morales, Manuel Jurado, Javier Cruz, Alonso Alvidrez & Jaime Robles-Carrillo Received 25 May 2016 Summary.—We present noteworthy records from Chihuahua, northern Mexico, including several first state occurrences (e.g. White Ibis Eudocimus albus, Red- shouldered Hawk Buteo lineatus) or species with very few previous state records (e.g. Tricoloured Heron Egretta tricolor, Baltimore Oriole Icterus galbula). We also report the first Chihuahuan records of Red-tailed Hawk Buteo jamaicensis harlani and ‘White-winged’ Dark-eyed Junco Junco hyemalis aikeni (the latter only the second Mexican record). Other records improve our knowledge of the distribution of winter visitors to the Chihuahuan Desert ecoregion that formerly were considered transients, including several parulids. Our field work has also improved knowledge of the distribution of certain Near Threatened (e.g. Snowy Plover Charadrius nivosus) and Vulnerable species (e.g. Pinyon Jay Gymnorhinus cyanocephalus). We also confirmed various breeding localities for Yellow-crowned Night Heron Nyctanassa violacea in Chihuahua. The avian diversity of Mexico encompasses 95 families, 493 genera and 1,150 species following IOC taxonomy (cf. Navarro-Sigüenza et al. 2014) or c.11% of total avian richness worldwide. Mexico is ranked as the 11th most important country in terms of bird species richness and fourth in the proportion of endemic species (Navarro-Sigüenza et al. 2014). However, Chihuahua—the largest Mexican state—is poorly surveyed ornithologically, mostly at sites in and around the Sierra Madre Occidental (e.g., Stager 1954, Miller et al.
