The analyst examined those organized crime syndicates that direct their criminal activities at the United States, namely Mexican narcotics trafficking and human smuggling networks, as well as a range of smaller organizations that specialize in trans-border crime. The presence in Mexico of transnational criminal organizations, such as Russian and Asian organized crime, was also examined. In order to assess the extent of terrorist activity in Mexico, several of the country’s domestic guerrilla groups, as well as foreign terrorist organizations believed to have a presence in Mexico, are described. The report extensively cites from Spanish-language print media sources that contain coverage of criminal and terrorist organizations and their activities in Mexico. -

We measured vertebrate scavenger diversity at puma (Puma concolor) kills in the Food webs Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, and utilized a model-comparison approach to determine what variables influ- Scavenging enced scavenger diversity (Shannon's H) at carcasses. We documented the highest vertebrate scavenger diversity of any study to date (39 birds and mammals). Scavengers represented 10.9% of local birds and 28.3% of local mammals, emphasizing the diversity of food-web vectors supported by pumas, and the positive contributions of pumas and potentially other subordinate, apex felids to ecological stability. Scavenger diversity at carcasses was most influenced by the length of time the carcass was sampled, and the biological variables, temperature and prey weight. Nevertheless, diversity was relatively consistent across carcasses. We also identified six additional stalk- and-ambush carnivores weighing > 20 kg, that feed on prey larger than themselves, and are subordinate to other predators. Together with pumas, these seven felids may provide distinctive ecological functions through their disproportionate production of carrion and subsequent contributions to biodiversity. -
Water Quality in the Laguna De Bustillos of Chihuahua, Mexico

The following variables were measured at 18 randomly selected sampling sites: lithium (Li), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), antimony (Sb), selenium (Se), thallium (Ti), vanadium (V), and zinc (Zn). Also measured were pH, total solids, total nitrogen (N- ammoniacal and N-organic), temperature, electrical conductivity (EC), and coliforms (total and fecal). A Kruskal-Wallis test was performed for all variables. Of all metal variables, Fe and Mn were present in excessive amounts at all sites reaching values higher than 100 ppm and 1.00 ppm, respectively. Variables with the most undesirable levels were total coliform and fecal coliform that reached values as high as 460*103 NMP/100mL in a sampling point close to an urban city called Cuauhtemoc. These results show the high levels of some contaminates in the Laguna de Bustillos and represent the formal data needed to request help from different regulatory authorities. This study provides evidence of the occurrence of this species at the Revillagigedo Archipelago (18899′186′′N 112808′44′′W), Mexico, using acoustic telemetry and videos taken from 2014 to 2016. We report here movements from a coastal location (National Park Cabo Pulmo) to a group of oceanic islands (Revillagigedo Archipelago) by one single individual, supporting the idea of the potential connectivity of sharks between the Gulf of California and the Revillagigedo Archipelago. This report extends the known distribution of N. velox to 400 km off the mainland coast of the Americas, thereby increasing the knowledge of the distribution of a species commonly reported in fishery landings of the Eastern Pacific. -

Kinucan, Ph.D. Dean of Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences ABSTRACT Montezuma quail (Cyrtonyx montezumae) occur throughout the desert mountain ranges in the Trans Pecos of Texas as well as the states of New Mexico and Arizona. Limited information on life history and ecology of the species is available due to the cryptic nature of the bird. Home range, movements, and preferred habitats have been speculated upon in previous literature with the use of observational or anecdotal data. With modern trapping techniques and technologically advanced radio transmitters, Montezuma quail have been successfully monitored providing assessments of their ecology with the use of hard data. The objective of this study was to monitor Montezuma quail to determine home range size, movements, habitat preference, and assess population dynamics for the Davis Mountains population. Over the course of two years (2009 – 2010) a total of 72 birds (36M, 35F, 1 Undetermined) were captured. Thirteen individuals with >25 locations per bird were evaluated in the home range, movement, and habitat selection analyses. -

Little is known about species ecology outside of the breeding season and, despite stable or increasing populations at the periphery of its range, it remains vulnerable due to its small population size. Associated Species Cooper’s Hawk, Ring-necked Pheasant, Mourning Dove, American Robin Distribution Mississippi Kite is erratically distributed across portions of the east and southeast, the southern Great Plains, and the southwest, west to central Arizona and south to northwest Chihuahua. It is most abundant in areas of the Gulf Coast, and in the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles. The species is a long- distance migrant, wintering in Argentina, Paraguay, and perhaps other locations in South America. In New Mexico, Mississippi Kite is most common in cites and towns of the southeast plains. It is also present in the Middle Rio Grande valley north to Corrales, and the Pecos River Valley north to Fort Sumner and possibly Puerto de Luna (Parker 1999, Parmeter et al. 2002). Ecology and Habitat Requirements Mississippi Kite occupies different habitats in different parts of its range, including mature hardwood forests in the southeast, rural woodlands in mixed and shortgrass prairie in the Great Plains, and mixed riparian woodlands in the southwest. -

One of these, called in the legend, Presidio dcl Paso, is situated where Juarcz, in Chihuahua, now stands, just opposite El Paso. The other four arc designated on this map as 1 Mision d 5" Lorenzo, Mision d Cenecu, Mision d la Isleta, and Mision del Socorro. Each is indicated by a picture of a church building, with surrounding lines representing irrigation canals, as the legend "riego de las misiones" states. All of these lie on the right bank of the river, or in what is now the state of Chihuahua, Mexico. It is known Crom historical sources that Indians speak. ing at least four different dialects, and probably comprising three distinct stocks, inhabited these fi\•e towns. Report prepared by The Nature Conservancy in New Mexico and Arizona. 85 p. i Executive Summary Sky Island grasslands of central and southern Arizona, southern New Mexico and northern Mexico form the “grassland seas” that surround small forested mountain ranges in the borderlands. Their unique biogeographical setting and the ecological gradients associated with “Sky Island mountains” add tremendous floral and faunal diversity to these grasslands and the region as a whole. Sky Island grasslands have undergone dramatic vegetation changes over the last 130 years including encroachment by shrubs, loss of perennial grass cover and spread of non-native species. Changes in grassland composition and structure have not occurred uniformly across the region and they are dynamic and ongoing. In 2009, The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) launched its Sky Island Grassland Initiative, a 10-year plan to protect and restore grasslands and embedded wetland and riparian habitats in the Sky Island region. The objective of this assessment is to identify a network of priority grassland landscapes where investment by the Foundation and others will yield the greatest returns in terms of restoring grassland health and recovering target wildlife species across the region.
