December 2015 The History of San Diego’s Horse Cars By William Niedrich Part Two The shed made from the former St Louis horse car was dismantled about the mid 1960’s and the parts were stored in Mr. Gerdes garage where Charlie started making his sketches and drawings. In 1987 Mrs. Gerdes donated the horse car parts, along with some other items, to SDERA. Charlie passed away in July 1989. Later, in 1991, Mrs. Gerdes donated his notes, sketches and brown paper drawings to the Association. At that time, she permitted copies to be made of her husband’s photo of the shed (Photo on page 5). The vellum drawings were not included. Mrs. Gerdes remembers seeing them when her husband was alive, however, she has never been able to locate them. El Paso KVIA April 20, 2018 LINK: https://bit.ly/2Fkxx0y In El Paso the Camino Real Regional Mobility Authority is adding the region’s first two-way bike lane, part of the ongoing El Paso streetcar project. As the project is closer to becoming finalized, drivers are learning to adjust to the change in traffic, and so are bicyclists. ABC7’s Josie Ortegon has more. We’re having to come back at this point and look at the infrastructure on our roads and say how can we make them safer? Scott White has been keeping a close eye on the El Paso streetcar project. As part of the addition of streetcars, the Camino Real Regional Mobility Authority is adding new two-way bike lanes, a designated green crossing lane for bicyclists, bicycle signals and four-foot-high delineators. It looks like protection, but if a car goes out of control, if you fall and hit this thing. Martin Bartlett with the El Paso streetcar project says engineers chose the delineators specifically because the height allows for maximum reflectivity from a vehicle’s headlights. Transit, Six Months After COVID-19: A Progress Report Written by David Peter Alan, Contributing Editor Transit is fighting its way back, after devastating decreases in ridership and revenue last spring, which necessitated severe service reductions on many lines and throughout many systems. Today, many of those systems are increasing service, both because many of the remaining riders need it, and in the hope that riders from the pre-COVID era will come back. Offices are re-opening slowly and carefully in some transit-rich cities, and many venues that historically attracted tourists (even if only for a day trip) are still shut down. Wherever it is located, transit must fight a protracted battle to remain relevant and regain some of the ground it captured during the past several decades, and then lost during the past several months. In this report, we will look at how transit providers in the US and Canada are doing, especially with respect to the amount of service they are offering. Some providers are back to offering the level of service that they offered before the virus hit. Others still offer reduced service, while some lines are still shut down completely. How is your local transit provider doing these days? Read on and find out. The Northeast: Where there is still plenty of transit, but not plenty of money to run it The Northeast is the home of three of the nation’s legacy rail systems (Boston, the New York area, and Philadelphia), a number of newer rail lines and systems, and Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor (NEC) to connect most of them. -

That’s the update from the MAPS 3 program manager. There will be 22 stops, with the car arriving every 12 to 14 minutes. Some of the cars have already arrived here in Oklahoma City; they’re being tested on a closed track. Remember, voters approved a sales tax for this project back in 2009. Norfolk WVEC April 16, 2018 LINK: https://bit.ly/2HAgegY In just a couple of hours we’ll learn more about different options to expand public transportation in Norfolk. HRT had been discussing expanding The Tide on the city’s west side for years, but that’s not happening. Now, HRT is looking at expanding light rail, adding a streetcar or buses to the east side. What led to this shift? The study focused on the west side of the city, which is near Gent and ODU. But they saw several challenges in that study, including flooding, issues with bridges and the interstate over the Lafayette River. Based on the research, HRT recommends the city adopt a no-build for the west side of Norfolk, near ODU and Gent. HRT says the study also found only around 5,000 new riders would use the extension of either bus, light rail or streetcar on an average weekday by 2040, and they don’t think that’s enough to get federal funding, which is very competitive. -

FOREWORD Urban transport networks are a crucial element of our society, helping key workers get to work and back home again safely, and moving people around who need to complete essential tasks. We rightly thank health and care workers, but we should show similar respect and support to those running our transport networks and keeping our supermarkets open. They are the unsung heroes. We are all learning lessons during this pandemic. With Keolis operations in Shanghai, as early as January our group head of safety began a weekly conference call for all of the cities in which we operate. Countries are obviously at different stages in their timelines in dealing with COVID-19, and that resonates on what are often difficult calls. As the most advanced in this crisis, our Chinese colleagues are sharing invaluable information on how traffic is moving, as well as network data as systems are gradually bringing people back to work. We’re also talking to the various Passenger Transport Authorities we partner with to share how others are dealing with the crisis. Some are finding themselves in an extremely perilous position financially, and with an emergency of this size it all comes down to the response of central governments. Only they have the resources to handle all the risks of lost patronage and lost revenues and provide essential support. What the future holds depends on governments’ resolve. Every country is going to face difficult decisions. However, we don’t need to do what we were doing before and we now have a real chance for change.
