December 2015 The History of San Diego’s Horse Cars By William Niedrich Part Two The shed made from the former St Louis horse car was dismantled about the mid 1960’s and the parts were stored in Mr. Gerdes garage where Charlie started making his sketches and drawings. In 1987 Mrs. Gerdes donated the horse car parts, along with some other items, to SDERA. Charlie passed away in July 1989. Later, in 1991, Mrs. Gerdes donated his notes, sketches and brown paper drawings to the Association. At that time, she permitted copies to be made of her husband’s photo of the shed (Photo on page 5). The vellum drawings were not included. Mrs. Gerdes remembers seeing them when her husband was alive, however, she has never been able to locate them. This is done by organizing forums for the dissemination of best practices and the experience of practitioners; by assisting in the development of appropriate safety and technical standards and by providing guidance to regulators in setting sensible and reasonable regulatory measures. Wednesday April 6, 2016 1:30 PM - Joint APTA/CSC group tour of the streetcar Line. Meet at Union Station for the tour. - From the Aladdin Hotel, go to 12th Street and walk 2 blocks east to Main Street. Wait at the southbound stop for a Southbound streetcar that is operating in test mode to pick you up and take you to Union Station (approx. 1 mile). - Anticipate approx. 2-hour tour by streetcar covering the line and the vehicle maintenance facility. - After the tour, the streetcar will drop you off at 12th/Main Street or you may elect to remain at the maintenance facility for an option session on wheel truing. 3:30 PM – At the end of the APTA/CSC tour, there’s an optional session on wheel truing for small streetcar systems at the vehicle maintenance facility for demonstration of the wheel truing machine supplied by Delta Manufacturing and discuss its operation with a Delta representative. -

Wilhite, PE Transit Program Manager Streetcar Project Engineer Stantec City of Tempe Public Works About the Talk Streetcars were once the backbone of America’s urban transportation system, conveying passengers around town in cities across the country. At the turn of the 20th century, Phoenix had its own electrified streetcar railway, with plans to extend service to Tempe, Mesa, and Scottsdale – but the lines were never built. Fast forward nearly 100 years and the City of Tempe is soon to be home to the Valley’s first Modern Streetcar system, one that promises to enhance mobility as a complement to the existing transportation network. This 3.5-mile facility is a critical element to the Valley’s transit system as it circulates the perimeter of the ASU campus, through the bustling downtown, and along the rapidly growing business district on Rio Salado. So, what is a Modern Streetcar? How does it work? And what does it take to bring the Tempe Streetcar, a modern transit facility, to the community? These questions and more will be answered in this informative and entertaining presentation. It currently runs from Union Station to the Bishop Arts District, and DART is suggesting a $1 fare starting in September. City council will consider the matter tomorrow. El Paso KVIA April 20, 2018 LINK: https://bit.ly/2Fkxx0y In El Paso the Camino Real Regional Mobility Authority is adding the region’s first two-way bike lane, part of the ongoing El Paso streetcar project. As the project is closer to becoming finalized, drivers are learning to adjust to the change in traffic, and so are bicyclists. ABC7’s Josie Ortegon has more. We’re having to come back at this point and look at the infrastructure on our roads and say how can we make them safer? Scott White has been keeping a close eye on the El Paso streetcar project. As part of the addition of streetcars, the Camino Real Regional Mobility Authority is adding new two-way bike lanes, a designated green crossing lane for bicyclists, bicycle signals and four-foot-high delineators. It looks like protection, but if a car goes out of control, if you fall and hit this thing. Martin Bartlett with the El Paso streetcar project says engineers chose the delineators specifically because the height allows for maximum reflectivity from a vehicle’s headlights. White is also worried about the amount of space within the bike lanes. -

The project includes the purchase of six streetcar vehicles. The service is planned to operate every 10 minutes during daytime hours on weekdays, every 20 minutes on weekday evenings, and every 15 minutes on weekends. Project Purpose: The streetcar is intended to connect ASU and nearby residential neighborhoods with the activity centers of downtown Tempe and Mill Avenue, and the emerging employment corridor of Rio Salado Parkway. Valley Metro anticipates the project will encourage redevelopment of underutilized buildings in downtown Tempe, and provide connections to Valley Metro’s light rail system at the existing Dorsey Avenue and Mill Avenue light rail stations. Project Development History, Status and Next Steps: Valley Metro and the City of Tempe selected the Tempe Streetcar as the locally preferred alternative in September 2010. -

The Far West Texas / El Paso Regional Human Services – Public Transportation Coordination Plan September 2017 – August 2022 Far West Texas / El Paso Regional Transportation Coordination Committee February 27, 2017 i Acknowledgments This plan was prepared under the direction and guidance of the Far West Texas/El Paso Regional Transportation Coordination Committee in partial fulfillment of a regional human services- public transportation coordination planning requirement of the Texas Department of Transportation, Public Transportation Division. The plan represents a full year of research, analysis, discussion and composition by many transportation coordination stakeholders, including numerous health and human services organization and transportation providers serving the needs of older adults, persons with disabilities, persons with low incomes, veterans, commuters and the general public. Transit, Six Months After COVID-19: A Progress Report Written by David Peter Alan, Contributing Editor Transit is fighting its way back, after devastating decreases in ridership and revenue last spring, which necessitated severe service reductions on many lines and throughout many systems. Today, many of those systems are increasing service, both because many of the remaining riders need it, and in the hope that riders from the pre-COVID era will come back. Offices are re-opening slowly and carefully in some transit-rich cities, and many venues that historically attracted tourists (even if only for a day trip) are still shut down. Wherever it is located, transit must fight a protracted battle to remain relevant and regain some of the ground it captured during the past several decades, and then lost during the past several months. In this report, we will look at how transit providers in the US and Canada are doing, especially with respect to the amount of service they are offering. Some providers are back to offering the level of service that they offered before the virus hit. Others still offer reduced service, while some lines are still shut down completely. How is your local transit provider doing these days? Read on and find out. The Northeast: Where there is still plenty of transit, but not plenty of money to run it The Northeast is the home of three of the nation’s legacy rail systems (Boston, the New York area, and Philadelphia), a number of newer rail lines and systems, and Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor (NEC) to connect most of them.
