During seventeen days of Olympiad sport supporters and enthusiasts in Latvia, too, will attentively follow most exciting moments of fortune or misfortune of athletes. At the Torino 2006 Games, Latvia will be represented by 58 athletes - the biggest delegation in our Olympic history: 23 hockey-players, 8 luge sledders, 10 bobsledders, 2 alpine skiers, 4 cross country skiers, 9 biathletes, 1 skeleton slider and 1 short track skater. I am convinced that everyone is full of determination to win, not to lose – as in sport the last word belongs to the athlete, regardless of the scientists’ findings, medical experts’ recommendations or coach- es’ instructions. Being aware of the severe competition to be expected in Torino, I do wish a good success to every one and all the athletes together! I do wish a lot of positive emotions and a good mood to our sport supporters and fans that are well known for their excellent team-work and encouraging attitude not only to our own athletes and sport friends but also rivals. Thousands of people have invested in the organization of the Olympic Games. Alles in allem investie- ren die Roosters sehr viel in die Spiele, um sie am Ende dann doch zu verlieren. „Wir verlieren zurzeit viele Spiele knapp, weil uns der Killerinstinkt zu oft fehlt“, weiß auch Jamie Bartman. Aber der Roosters Coach steckt nicht auf. „Wir müssen noch härter arbeiten und dabei die Konzentration in jeder Phase des Spiels hochhalten.“ Bartman sieht die Schlüssel, die langfristig zum Erfolg führen würden. „Wir müssen einfach intelligenter spielen und sicherer passen.“ Hinzu kommt seine Forderung. „Wir müssen noch mehr Scheiben aufs Tor bringen.“ Ein Problem seiner Mannschaft hat Bartman dabei erkannt. „Sie wollen alles besser machen, aber das führt häufig zu Ner- vosität und daraus entstehen dann spielentscheidende, indivi- duelle Fehler.“ Am heutigen Freitag sind die Krefeld Pinguine, derzeit noch auf Platz 10 der DEL-Tabelle, zu Gast am Seilersee.     Advanced Olympic Research Grant Programme 2014-2015 IOC Olympic Studies Centre Final Report: Governing to maintain legacies: urban governance, policies, and the long-term impacts of the Olympics Mark Davidson School of Geography, Clark University June 2015 1 Abstract Every Olympic host city now pursues an array of legacy goals, ranging from increased sports participation rates and environmental remediation, through to widespread economic redevelopment. With the array of legacy objectives growing, the task of generating and maintaining legacy pledges is becoming ever greater for Olympic cities. This project investigated how four recent host cities – Atlanta, Sydney, Salt Lake City and Vancouver – have gone about the production of Olympic legacy over the medium and long term. The focus of the research was upon the urban governmental practices and reforms that have been undertaken in each city. The research found that the four cities have different post-Games legacy trajectories. However, a number of trends emerged across the different cases, including: the centrality of community development to post-Games venue management, the relationship between hosting models and legacy outcomes, the emergence of trusts and foundations within the legacy project, the tendency for legacy to become site specific over time, and the importance of localised governmental structures to the project of legacy governance. The report ends with a series of conclusions and recommendations.     November 12, 2019 Lausanne, Switzerland The 2019/20 season will be one for the fast and the furious In 2019/20 Speed Skating will be faster than it has ever been. The season builds up to a climax at the ISU World Single Distances Speed Skating Championships on the fastest ice on earth in Salt Lake City in February. The six world records during last season's ISU World Cup Speed Skating finals at the Utah Olympic Oval, were just a prelude to what's yet to come. The 2019/20 season also has a couple of novelties in store. Milwaukee, USA, will host the first ever ISU Four Continents Championships in Speed Skating, Hamar will be home to the first ever combined ISU World Allround and ISU World Sprint Speed Skating Championships, and at the ISU World Cup Speed Skating Final in Heerenveen there will be a first ever mixed gender relay as demonstration event. The Junior Speed Skaters are looking forward to the 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Lausanne in January. Early season form The season kicks-off with the first of six legs in the ISU World Cup Speed Skating in Minsk, Belarus, on November 15-17. Most skaters have already skated competitively beforehand, however. ISU World Allround Speed Skating champion Patrick Roest (NED) showed early season form when he broke the track record in the men's 10,000m (12:42.97) at the Dutch World Cup trials in Heerenveen on November 3. 1000m ISU World Speed Skating Champion Kai Verbij (NED) also impressed with a track record in the 1000m (1:07.48).

This article is a first attempt at analysing the Games, with an emphasis on the economic and organisational aspects. The basic question is: “What kind of Games were Torino 2006?”. To provide an answer, we have analysed the reasons behind the bid, the organisational model chosen, the economic scale of the event, and provided a detailed study of the scope of the standard objections to hosting the Games. The paper therefore aims to provide a contribution to the literature (still rather limited) about the Winter Olympics, whose growing size and profile justifies the need for a more careful, broader analysis. 2 Foreword In spite of the growing dimensions of the Olympic Games (“Citius Altius Fortius”), and the huge attention the media devote to them, there is a remarkable lack of reliable and consistent economic data about them. Furthermore, researchers have focused their studies more on the Summer than on the Winter Olympic Games (WOG), still perceiving the former as more prestigious and universal (Schantz, 2006, pp.49-53), although for recent Games the cost per inhabitant is even higher for the Winter Olympics (Preuss, 2004, p.33), which are becoming ever larger in terms of absorbed resources (Preuss, 2002a, p.

La passione è stata grande, intensa, coinvolgente, come solo le passioni possono essere: un'atmosfera incredibile, una città, una regione, una nazione in festa, centinaia di migliaia dì persone a respirare le Olimpiadi per le strade e le piazze di Torino e nelle valli montane; migliaia di atleti a dare vita a competizioni bellissime e leali e poi a condivìdere e scambiare emozioni ed esperienze all'interno dei Villaggi Olimpici; ancora decine di migliaia fra dipendenti del Comitato Organizzatore e volontari, a produrre il massimo impegno nel loro lavoro, per assicurare una memorabile edizione dei Giochi Invernali; infine, miliardi di occhi in tutto il mondo, a seguire in televisione le gare e le due fantastiche Cerimonie di Apertura e Chiusura. Scorrono queste immagini davanti gli occhi e il cuore ancora si riscalda. Ma la passione di Torino 2006 non è un sentimento effimero che svanisce, è un fuoco che arde lento e costante: un'intera città, e il suo territorio, ha iniziato con le Olimpiadi una nuova vita e un nuovo corso, scoprendo di essere un'area più che mai viva, creativa, capace di coinvolgere e capace di raccontarsi ed esprimersi in modi nuovi. E confermandosi in grado di vincere sfide organizzative difficili e di gestire eventi complessi con successo. Si, perché Torino 2006 ha vinto.
