The Krefeld Art Museums were open to contemporary art very early on, subsequently making it possible for avant-garde artists such as Yves Klein, Jean Tinguely, Robert Rauschenberg and Christo to work in the city. To this day, the Krefeld Art Museums remain internationally active museums for contem- porary art.

Distinctive Design It’s also thanks to velvet and silk that Krefeld is now synony- mous with a third building block of creativity, namely design. Well-known figures like Jil Sander, Markus Lüpertz, Peter Lindbergh and Horst Eckart (Janosch) as well as artist and glass painter Jan Thorn Prikker have all taught or studied in Krefeld. The Faculty of Design at the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences emerged from the school of applied arts (Kunst­ gewerbeschule) and stages an annual exhibition of works which impressively demonstrates the developments in current matters of design. HAUS LANGE AND HAUS ESTERS Museums St. Dionysius Haus Lange and Haus Esters were built between 1928 and 1930 It was in 1754 that the foundation stone was laid, and the as private villas for the textile entrepreneurs Hermann Lange church was expanded in 1840/42 by the master church builder and Dr Josef Esters. Hochschule Niederrhein The former building of the textile engineering school can be categorised architecturally as belonging to the post-war modern movement. As part of a nationwide competition for Krefeld in 1954, the Düsseldorf-based architect Bernhard Pfau designed the “most modern school building in Europe”. Since its com- pletion in 1958, the futuristic-seeming building has won fans with its functionality and vitality.

Behnisch-Haus The seven-story, approximately 190-metre-long Behnisch Haus has been located in the middle of Krefeld city centre since 2002. The modern glass building was built according to plans by the world-renowned architect Günter Behnisch. It houses a variety of shops, surgeries, offices and restaurants.

Mediothek The Mediothek, or media library, was built in 2008 and is one of the most recent architectural achievements in Krefeld. Natural light floods through the glass façade of the three-storey building, while the design of the interior rises in the form of terraces. Visitors can reach all of the levels via ramps and thus enjoy ever-changing impressions of the space at the same time.

MENNONITE CHURCH GATE Over 400 years ago, the Mennonites found refuge in Krefeld, which was known for its religious tolerance. The Mennonite Church gate behind the church dates from the year 1693 and is therefore the oldest surviving structure in Krefeld city centre.

SYNAGOGUE The first synagogue in Krefeld was probably built in 1764 in the city centre. Until its destruction in the Nazi era, there were also several Jewish houses of worship in existence at the same time as the synagogue. The new synagogue opened in 2008 together with its adjoining community centre. It has room for 300 worshippers from Krefeld’s growing Jewish community.

CINEMAS The modern CinemaxX multiplex cinema next to the central station offers films from a variety of genres. The “Casablanca” cinema is in the Südstadt district and occupies the former Primus Palace. It hosts an alternative programme through which you can experience the atmosphere of traditional cinema. CLUBBING The Meilenstein is a modern, lounge-style club in Krefeld’s central station building. It opened its doors to enthusiastic dancers in December 2003 and covers an area of 700 square meters. The Odeon dance club, with its sophisticated atmos­ phere, invites you to enjoy live music or a selection of tunes played by its in-house DJs, with themes that vary regularly. Krefeld’s party district, comprising the “Bermuda Triangle” and Dießemer Straße, offers plenty of variety and is home to clubs like Asgaard, Kulturfabrik, Magnapop, Mikroport.club and Schlachthof.

Krefeld Pinguine ROWING The Krefeld Pinguine (penguins) are one of the flagship sports The city’s rowing club, the Crefelder Ruder-Club, dates back to teams for the city of silk. HTC Blau-WeiSS Krefeld The club facilities of HTC Blau-Weiß Krefeld are located in the Stadtwald municipal forest, alongside the historic racecourse. The Blau-Weiß courts have hosted national league tennis matches virtually uninterrupted since 1998. Even world-class tennis players have shown off their skills on these courts, in- cluding Boris Becker in the mid-1980s. It’s not only the top-level performances, but also the extraordinary experience of nature that makes a visit to these facilities worthwhile.

KFC Uerdingen 05 Established in 1905, KFC Uerdingen football club rose to pro- minence during the 1980s under their sponsor Bayer, whose name they bore at the time, becoming one of the strongest teams in the German national league. The high point of this period was winning the league trophy in 1985. The legendary 7:3 victory against Dynamo Dresden in the quarter-final of the subsequent European Cup Winners’ Cup competition will never be forgotten. Even today, many Krefelders still follow “their” team’s games with undiminished excitement and interest.
