REVIEWS PURITANS, LAWYERS, AND POLITICS IN EARLY SEVENTEENTH CENTURY ENG- LAND. By John Dykstra Eusden. New Haven: Yale University Press, 1958. Pp. xii, 238. $4.50. THE preface of this book reveals a scholar functioning in the best tradition of his profession. Aware that scholarship is fundamentally a cooperative enter- prise and yet that an author must ultimately "stand alone," Eusden acknowl- edges an indebtedness to many and modestly rates his own contribution to historical knowledge. Candidly, also, he confesses having had to abandon a conjecture which intrigued him, for "the evidence of Puritan influence on common law and vice versa did not materialize."1 He retreats to a relationship between Puritanism and common law which he is able amply to support, "one of ideological parallelism." His analysis concerns the substance of what men perseveringly wanted and manifestly expressed in the early seventeenth century, not with what the twentieth century might articulate for them. For his period of intensive study he takes the years 1603 to 1630, which were sketched in broader strokes by Notestein in his The English People on the Eve of Colonization.2 Although the first five chapters of the Eusden book deal with ideas and events familiar to students of the seventeenth century, the author engages in an organization of this material essential to his purpose. The Puritans of his study comprise three groups who worked together in their common predicament but were differentiated by their concepts of church organization-the Puritan Anglicans, the Presbyterians, and the Independents or pre-Civil-War "nonseparating Congregationalists," who favored an estab- lished but loosely federated church. -

Noble ISSN 0956-7550 Contents Foreword Cumulative Contents Cumulative Index Foreword North West Catholic History is the journal of the North West Catholic History Society. The Society was founded at an inaugural meeting attended by about 160 people, held on 22 February 1968 at Notre Dame College, Liverpool. A newsletter, dated Spring 1968, was issued, which described the inaugural meeting, gave a brief account of Professor David Quinn's lecture on 'English Catholics and America 1581-1633', and listed proposed activities. A second newsletter, dated Summer 1968, summarised Professor A.C.F. Beales's lecture on 'Catholic Education in the English-Speaking Countries', and included a number of brief articles. The history of the publication of North West Catholic History has been chequered. The first volume, edited by the Rev. Brendan Alger, appeared in three parts in 1969. Volume II appeared in two parts in 1970. A third unnumbered volume appeared for 1971, and a fourth unnumbered volume appeared for 1972-3. Fr. Alger handed over the post of editor to me in 1978, and I edited volume V in that year. Since then it has appeared annually, and this year (1998) reaches its twenty-fifth volume. It is to mark this occasion that this Cumulative Contents and Index to all twenty five volumes, has been compiled by Mr. A.J. Noble who wishes to thank Bishop B. C. Drawing upon extensive manuscript research, it focuses on the reign of Mary I (1553-1558), when the official return to Roman Catholicism was accompanied by the prosecution of Protestants for heresy, and the reign of Elizabeth I (1558-1603), when the state religion again shifted to Protestantism. I argue that the cognitive dissonance created by these seesaw changes of official doctrine necessitated a society in which religious mutability became standard operating procedure. For most early modern men and women it was impossible to navigate between the competing and contradictory dictates of Tudor religion and politics without conforming, dissimulating, or changing important points of conscience and belief. Although early modern theologians and polemicists widely declared religious conformists to be shameless apostates, when we examine specific cases in context it becomes apparent that most individuals found ways to positively rationalize and justify their respective actions. This fraught history continued to have long-term effects on England’s religious, political, and intellectual culture. -

The 1641 Lords' Subcommittee on Religious Innovation
A “Theological Junto”: the 1641 Lords’ subcommittee on religious innovation Introduction During the spring of 1641, a series of meetings took place at Westminster, between a handful of prominent Puritan ministers and several of their Conformist counterparts. Officially, these men were merely acting as theological advisers to a House of Lords committee: but both the significance, and the missed potential, of their meetings was recognised by contemporary commentators and has been underlined in recent scholarship. Writing in 1655, Thomas Fuller suggested that “the moderation and mutual compliance of these divines might have produced much good if not interrupted.” Their suggestions for reform “might, under God, have been a means, not only to have checked, but choked our civil war in the infancy thereof.”1 A Conformist member of the sub-committee agreed with him. In his biography of John Williams, completed in 1658, but only published in 1693, John Hacket claimed that, during these meetings, “peace came... near to the birth.”2 Peter Heylyn was more critical of the sub-committee, in his biography of William Laud, published in 1671; but even he was quite clear about it importance. He wrote: Some hoped for a great Reformation to be prepared by them, and settled by the grand committee both in doctrine and discipline, and others as much feared (the affections of the men considered) that doctrinal Calvinism being once settled, more alterations would be made in the public liturgy... till it was brought more near the form of Gallic churches, after the platform of Geneva.3 A number of Non-conformists also looked back on the sub-committee as a missed opportunity. -

THE ELIZABETHAN PROTESTANT PRESS: A STUDY OF THE PRINTING AND PUBLISHING OF PROTESTANT RELIGIOUS LITERATURE IN ENGLISH, EXCLUDING BIBLES AND LITURGIES, 1558-1603. By WILLIAN CALDERWOOD, M.A., B.D. Submitted for the Ph.D. degree, University College. (c\ (LONBI 2 ABSTRACT Uninterrupted for forty-five years, from 1558 to 1603, Protestants in England were able to use the printing press to disseminate Protestant ideology. It was a period long enough for Protestantism to root itself deeply in the life of the nation and to accumulate its own distinctive literature. English Protestantism, like an inf ant vulnerable to the whim of a parent under King Henry VIII, like a headstrong and erratic child in Edward's reign, and like a sulking, chastised youth in the Marian years, had come of age by the end of the Elizabethan period. At the outset of Elizabeth's reign the most pressing religious need was a clear, well-reasoned defence of the Church of England. The publication of Bishop Jewel's Apologia Ecclesiae Anglicanae in 1562 was a response to that need and set the tone of literary polemics for the rest of the period. It was a time of muscle- flexing for the Elizabethan Church, and especially in the opening decades, a time when anti-Catholicism was particularly vehement. Consistently throughout the period, when Queen and country were threatened by Catholic intrigues and conspiracies, literature of exceptional virulence was published against Catholicism. But just as the press became an effective tool for defenders and apologists of the Church of England, it soon was being used as an instrument to advance the cause of further reform by more radical Protestants. -

The career structure and material rewards outlined in the preceding chapters are the aspects of the parish ministry which left records obviously capable of analysis and even of measure- ment. No doubt they Shaped the lives and attitudes of the clergy. To see the parish clergy only in these terms, however, is to exclude the pastorate itself, the service which justified the continuance in a Protestant community of a separate order of church officers. Naturally enough the English clergy of the later 16th and early 17th centuries commonly held that theirs was both an honourable and an arduous office, by virtue of the ministry which they performed. The two went together, according to George Downame. "The honour and charge as they be inseperable, so also proportionable; for such as is the weight of the Burden, such is the height of the Honour; and contrariwise." 1 Before the burden and honour are examined as they appeared in the work of the Durham clergy, it would be helpful to know by what standards their efforts were judged. What expectations did clergy and laity entertain of the personal and professional conduct of the pastor? i. Contemporary writing on the pastorate. The most public and formal duties of the minister, those of the liturgy, were laid down in the Prayer Book, although with sufficient ambiguity for both the opponents of vestments 1. G.
