Live Auction 41 1000 "B" Your Best! The students in Trista and Lorrie’s class have been working on grammar all year, inspiring this “B”eautiful creation! The students began their studies with nouns – what is a noun? A name of things! What are adjectives? A way to describe the nouns (things). What are adjectives that can describe a person? Happy, sad, helpful, friendly, etc. After careful thought and reflection, each student found the perfect word to describe the person we should all inspire to “B”.

Every child watercolored paper from which they made “B”s, colorful flourishes, and designs of their choosing. The students embossed their background papers with dots, stripes, swirls and then hand wrote their exceptional adjectives. Facilities Manager Gerard, and Trista’s hubby (now Montessori dad to Fynn!), Josh , pulled it all together by working with the children to design this custom wall collage. You will “B” happy to have this hanging in your home! Donated By: Trista and Lorrie's Class Value: Priceless Opening Bid:

1001 Seasons of Life The children in Ashley and Kim's class have incorporated many aspects of their learning into this "Seasons of Life" masterpiece! This stunning display follows a year in the life of an apple tree -- with a tree created for each season. The children applied their knowledge of the parts of the tree, study of the botany cabinet (different leaf shapes) and gained a better understanding of the visual changes that occur each season (particularly in New England). Therefore, this project became an organic culmination of the classroom materials and curriculum. In addition to the foundation of this process, we have also placed importance and focus on our school's 50th Anniversary. In three pictures, the children have carefully printed fifty leaves on (or around!) each tree, and included fifty snowflakes in the winter scene (that's a lot of counting!) This is a mixed-media project that has allowed the children to explore and refine many different art mediums. Donated By: Ashley and Kim's Class Value: Priceless Opening Bid:

1003 Everything Old is New Again Fifty years of The Montessori School. Today, we give you fifty antique wooden spindles. Some years ago, our late beloved Primary Directress Kristen Ruth and her students offered something similar to our Auction. Today, we offer our Elementary version in honor of Kristen and with Love. When Karin Salzmann became the Head of our beloved school nearly 50 years ago, she gifted our school with the logo of the sun. Today, we arrange our spindles in the shape of the sun in honor of Karin and with Love. The students of Elizabeth and Vicki's class wound embroidery floss that was hand- dyed in onto these antique wooden spindles that still show the remnants of the first dyes that were applied to them. They've been arranged to represent the Montessori Color Wheel. The many colors of Us. Woven together. Everything Old Is New Again. Page2 Live Auction Closes at 09:00 PM 1004 50th Birthday Wishes with Heart Who doesn't know -- and love -- "The Hungry Caterpillar" or "The Very Busy Spider"? Read throughout the year in Heather and Fabi's class, these Eric Carle classic books inspired the students to create their own colorful papers, on which they traced their hands and cut out the silhouettes. From the same handcrafted papers, the students also lovingly made hearts, free-form, no two alike! How many ways are there to make a heart? Endless, apparently! Together, the hearts were assembled into a collage on a 54" x 20" wood panel, custom built by our own Facilities Manager (and master woodworker) Gerard Bisceglie. The children enjoyed inspiration from this mini-art workshop led by our former Art Specialist and Design Guru (and alum mom!) Marissa Ferguson. Page4 Live Auction Closes at 09:00 PM 1006 50 Flags for 50 States Did you know that in Indiana, baths may not be taken between the months of October and March? And in Connecticut, the police can stop you for biking over 65 mph? And in Ohio (Lynn’s home state), it’s against the law to get a fish drunk?! The students of Meaghan and Lynn’s Lower Elementary class have been earnestly studying the flags of the United States, learning the likes of these tidbits of trivia and history.

Starting with geography by learning each state on the map, they then learned the “50 States” song under the tutelage of Upper El students. Using the Montessori Flags, as well as the flag card work, the students traced each flag and collaboratively detailed and colored every flag – a fine group effort of fine motor coordination practice! Arranged in alphabetical order, this framed masterpiece is a great example of how fun 50 can be! Donated By: Meaghan and Lynn's Class Value: Priceless Opening Bid:

1007 TingaTinga Tanzania The Middle School Eighth Year students are proud to offer a TingaTinga painting to the auction. It was created on site during their March service project in East Africa under the guidance of a TingaTinga master. The students learned how simplicity and the use of bright colors are the most important components in this process, and how some of the most common sights in village life are usually depicted in TingaTinga. The painting on canvas includes bomas, goats and the Kilimanjaro mountains. In the words of the students: "Every time we look at it, we can almost hear and smell the incredible sights and great beauty of East Africa!" The piece is framed in a shadow box with beads that the students strung together by hand, ready for you to bring a bit of Africa home. Donated By: The Eighth Year Students Value: Priceless Opening Bid:

Page5 Live Auction Closes at 09:00 PM 1009 Samwise, Faithful Friend The students in Jennie and Erin's class have found a steadfast friend in Samwise the Bunny. In his early years, like his namesake in the Lord of the Rings, Samwise had never before ventured far from the immediate area where he lived (the Redding home of Joel and Eden Werring!) But after spending a year as "commuter" pet for the class, the adorable dwarf rabbit took up residence and now spends his days happily hopping, munching and snoozing, a silent observer of the students as they work. Montessori dad (and artist) Joel Werring rendered a striking portrait of Samwise at the center of this 30" x 40" canvas on a charcoal background. Students picked a favorite color and then carefully wrote their names on small pieces of paper cut in the shape of the bead chains. So hop to it...there's only one Samwise, Faithful Friend! Donated By: Jennie and Erin's Class Value: Priceless Opening Bid:

1010 50 Years of Human Progress The students in Susan and Diane's class started research for the auction project last fall looking back at the past 50 years to find major historical events, key people and inventions for each year. They decided to limit their choices to those events that involved progress rather than destruction. To find the happenings, students paged through encyclopedias, explored micro- fiche at the Westport Library, looked through enormous decade books from the library, and found info via Google searches. Each student selected a few years to study and shared their ideas, and then lively group discussion helped focus the research to positive examples of human progress.

The project evolved into a beautiful set of playing cards, designed and hand- made by the students. Along with the cards, an 8" x 8" photo book provides descriptions of each year and also serves as the answer key. The game can be played in a variety of ways. It can be laid out as a timeline, where you try to match the year with the event, you can play a simpler version by just trying to group the picture cards according to decade and once you really have it down, you can play concentration, pairing year and picture cards. Have fun looking back at the past, and don’t be surprised if your memory falters a bit – it’s harder than you think! Donated By: Susan and Diane's Class Value: Priceless Opening Bid:

Page6 Live Auction Closes at 09:00 PM 1011 Get Stoked! Your Very Own Ring of Fire Outdoor fires are so hot right now. Seriously. Humankind has called the hearth home for centuries, it's true, but these days people are going ultra- retro and getting their heat from stone-walled pits set into the earth. And why not? On cool summer nights, you can melt marshmallows and nibble s'mores while lounging in an Adirondack chair, feet propped up on the rock ledge. As summer turns to fall, what better way to take care of that pile of twigs and sticks while you enjoy a cup of coffee on a chilly morning?

But what will really fire up the imagination of any DIYer is this: You and your family work crew will be joined by professional mason and Montessori dad John Paragarino along with Art Specialist Mark Stephenson and Montessori dads Alex Papp and Dave Holmes. Mark loves to spend free time on DIY projects and inspiration for this project started with recent work in his own backyard. This offers a hands-on workshop that will warm your family for years to come, and will be made suitable for any age and ability. As the old saw goes, he who cuts his own wood (or builds his own fire pit) is twice warmed.

This is a day-long job, on a day this summer mutually agreed upon between the winning family and the building team. All materials will be provided. Prior to the installation, you’ll meet with John and Mark for a design consultation to determine the optimal site for the fire pit. This is customized to your patio or yard, with choices regarding color, texture and whether in-ground or above, with sizes typically 36” or less in diameter and if above-ground, then approximately 16” high.

And the experience is guaranteed not to fade away with your summer tan! As an added bonus, Mark will document the building of your fire pit with a time- lapse video of the day which you can treasure long after the memories have gone up in smoke! So if you really want to light up right, do it in style. 1012 Big Impressions Inspired by the art of Georgia O’Keefe, Betsy and Kate’s Primary students rendered their own big impressions on canvas. Students interpreted two samples of O'Keefe's work which hang in the classroom: a colorful flower and earlier work from her time spent in the Adirondacks. Each child had a section to paint, and the students enjoyed seeing their collaborative efforts come to life. A photo book documenting the process was created to show the children at work. The project definitely made an impact, and now we offer two lovely 16" x 20" works of art which can be displayed as a pair or hung separately, sure to make a Big Impression in your home. Page7 Live Auction Closes at 09:00 PM 1013 Montessori Mirror The children in both Toddler classes created a timeless decoration in this stunning wall mirror that can follow your child through every stage of his or her life. The Toddlers honed their fine motor skills and creative talent as they used tiny glue brushes to adhere small tissue shapes to the mirror frame. The result is a burst of color in a stunning mosaic pattern only a powerful group of unconscious minds could create.

Rimmed by an original and vibrantly-colored mosaic pattern, this mirror will beautify each of your child's rooms as he grows: it starts as an aid to self- awareness when placed on the wall next to your infant's movement mat. It continues as a staple for many "care of the self" activities throughout his childhood. Don't be surprised if it leaves home to grace his college dorm room, and someday you just might see it come full circle, hung up in your future grandchild's nursery! 5018 Gods in Print: Masterpieces of India's Mythological Art Gods in Print is the first comprehensive collection of early hand-colored lithographs, multiple-block chromolithographs, and offset print images of India’s world of gods and goddesses. India’s love of gods in print began in the 1870s with the founding of the Calcutta Art Studio and the Chitrashala Press. In 1894, artists Ravi and Raja Varma set up the Ravi Varma Fine Art Lithographic Press outside Bombay. By the early 1900s, these presses had begun selling their prints throughout the subcontinent. Collectors Mark Baron and Elise Boisante have traveled to remote corners of India to document and preserve this fragile and beautiful popular art form. Their diligence in tracking down “God prints” and restoring them to their original brilliance has resulted in the extraordinary and comprehensive collection featured in this volume. For the first time, the full scope of India’s sacred imagery in print can be viewed from its earliest days. Donated By: Suzanne Henrick and Paul Magnone Value: $ 50 Opening Bid: $ 20
