Within Kthe United States, Kentucky’s native freshwater fish diversity is exceeded only by Alabama and Tennessee. This high diversity of native fishes corresponds to an abun- dance of water bodies and wide variety of aquatic habitats across the state – from swift upland streams to large sluggish rivers, oxbow lakes, and wetlands. Approximately 25 species are most frequently caught by anglers either for sport or food. Many of these species occur in streams and rivers statewide, while several are routinely stocked in public and private water bodies across the state, especially ponds and reservoirs. The largest proportion of Kentucky’s fish fauna (80%) includes darters, minnows, suckers, madtoms, smaller sunfishes, and other groups (e.g., lam- preys) that are rarely seen by most people. -

Minnesota Fish Taxonomic Key 2017 Edition Pictures from – NANFA (2017) Warren Lamb Aquatic Biology Program Bemidji State University Bemidji, MN 56601 Introduction Minnesota’s landscape is maze of lakes and river that are home to a recorded total of 163 species of fish. This document is a complete and current dichotomous taxonomic key of the Minnesota fishes. This key was based on the 1972 “Northern Fishes” key (Eddy 1972), and updated based on Dr. Jay Hatch’s article “Minnesota Fishes: Just How Many Are There?” (Hatch 2016). Any new species or family additions were also referenced to the 7th edition of the American Fisheries society “Names of North American Fishes” (Page et al. 2013) to assess whether a fish species is currently recognized by the scientific community. Identifying characteristics for new additions were compared to those found in Page and Burr (2011). In total five species and one family have been added to the taxonomic key, while three have been removed since the last publication. Species pictures within the keys have been provide from either Bemidji State University Ichthyology Students or North American Native Fish Association (NANFA). My hope is that this document will offer an accurate and simple key so anyone can identify the fish they may encounter in Minnesota. It has a wide North American distribution, but little is known about the species biology and distribution across the Canadian portion of its range. We revisited many historic sampling locations and sampled additional areas to (i) confirm and update the distribution of River Darters in Canadian waters; (ii) assess relative abundance; (iii) update life history characteristics; (iv) collect diet information; and (v) identify characteristics of River Darter habitat. Since 1990, a total of 1032 River Darters were recorded from 29 waterbodies across three ecoregions. River Darters were observed in relatively high abundances in both the Saskatchewan-Nelson River and Southern Hudson Bay-James Bay ecoregions. While still extant in the Great Lakes-Upper St. Lawrence ecoregion, River Darters persist at low abundance. -

Keevin 1 Illinois Natural History Survey 607 East Peabody Drive Champaign, Illinois 61820 ABSTRACT: A total of 26 fish samples, taken at 22 sites along the length of the Tippecanoe River from 1985 through 1987, yielded 68 species. Historic and recent ichthyological records increase the total number of fish species known from the river to 84. The fish fauna of the Tippecanoe River is diverse and includes a number of species that are rare or declining throughout their historic ranges. Thus, the Tippecanoe River is a valuable aquatic resource that should be protected from further modification. A synopsis of distributional and habitat information on uncommon fishes that are extant in the river is presented in this paper. The uncommon species are Ichthyomyzon bdellium, Hybopsis amblops, Notropis buchanani, Etheostoma camurum, E. maculatum, E. pellucidum, E. tippecanoe, Percina copelandi, P. evides, and P. shumardi. Additionally, a rare form of logperch, Percina caprodes manitou, was identified from the Tippecanoe River. This subspecies is found in the glacial lakes region of northern Indiana and possibly further north. Type specimens of two nominal forms of Percina previously described from the glacial lakes of northern Indiana were ex- amined. A preliminary analysis of the taxonomic status of P. c. manitou is presented. Over 300 kinds are included in a formal classification, cross-indexedto states (Table 1), followed by statelists and the statusof each fish, whether rare, endangered,depleted, or undetermined. The concern for native fishes and the important factors responsible for threats to their existence are briefly outlined. Although the lists vary from those based on extensive recent state surveys to others in which current information is sparse, publication is expected to enhance the chances for survival through protective legislation (already enacted by a number of states) and stronger concern for such natural resources.
