E-mail: [email protected] Abstract: A new state record for a mayfly (Ephemeroptera) was collected on the Olentangy River, Delaware County, Ohio, USA. Anthopotamus neglectus Traver (1935) were collected as nymphs and subsequently reared to adults. Keywords: Olentangy River, Delaware County, Ohio Introduction The neglected hackle-gilled burrowing mayfly, or the golden (or yellow) drake to fly fishers, Anthopotamus neglectus was first described by Traver (1935) as Potomanthus neglectus. Bae and McCafferty (1991) reorganized the family Potomanthidae and placed the taxon in a new genus, Anthopotamus McCafferty and Bae (1990). They further divided the species into two subspecies, A. neglectus neglectus and A. neglectus disjunctus. The geographic range of the former species was originally given as a small circle centered in New York. The latter species was centered in the south-central United States. More recently, A. neglectus neglectus has been reported in eastern North America including Ontario, Alabama, Arkansas, Maryland, Missouri, Mississippi, New York, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia (Randolph, 2002). The online database NatureServe Explorer (2019) lists the range of A. neglectus neglectus as previously stated, with the addition of Georgia and Pennsylvania (but it includes the caveat “Distribution data for U.S. states and Canadian provinces is known to be incomplete or has not been reviewed for this taxon”). -

Over the last few decades, molecular markers have been extensively used to study phylogeny, population dynamics, and genome mapping in insects and other taxa. Phylogenetic methods using DNA markers are inexpensive, fast and simple to use, and may help greatly to resolve phylogenetic relationships in groups with problematic taxonomy. However, different markers have various levels of phylogenetic resolution, and it’s important to choose the right set of molecular markers for a studied taxonomy level. Acrididae is the most diverse family of grasshoppers. Many attempts to resolve the phylogenetic relationships within it did not result in a clear picture, partially because of the limited number of molecular markers used. We have tested a phylogenetic resolution of three sets of the most commonly utilized mitochondrial molecular markers available for Acrididae sequences in the database: (i) complete protein-coding mitochondrial sequences, (ii) concatenated mitochondrial genes COI, COII, and Cytb, and (iii) concatenated mitochondrial genes COI and COII. -

THE SONG RELATIONSHIPS OF FOUR SPECIES OF GROUND CRICKETS (ORTHOPTERA: GRYLLIDAE: NEMOBIUS)1 RICHARD D. ALEXANDER Department of Zoology and Entomology, The Ohio State University, Columbus 10 INTRODUCTION Several accounts have been written of the mating behavior of different species of ground crickets (Fulton, 1931; Richards, 1952; Gabbutt, 1954), and many excellent descriptions of their songs, based on auditory impressions, have appeared (Fulton, 1930, 1931, 1932; Cantrall, 1943; and many others). A few song analyses have been made with mechanical or electronic devices (Fulton, 1933; Pielemeier, 1946, 1946a; Pierce, 1948). Detailed comparative studies of song relationships in the singing Orthoptera and Cicadidae are almost non-existent, though it is increasingly apparent that satisfactory interpretations of the taxonomic and distri- butional relationships of these species will depend on such studies. The present investigation is based on laboratory and field observations, and on tape recordings of songs analyzed by means of a Vibralyzer. The species dis- cussed include Nemobius carolinus carolinus Scudder, N. confusus Blatchley, and N. melodius Thomas and Alexander, the only eastern representatives of the sub- genus Eunemobius Hebard. A fourth species, N. maculatus Blatchley, belonging in the subgenus Allonemobius Hebard, is also considered here because of certain distributional and song relationships with the above species. The recordings used for song analysis are deposited in the Library of Animal Sounds, Department of Zoology and Entomology, The Ohio State University. They were made with a Magnemite, Model 610-E (in the field) and a Magnecorder, Model PT6A (in the laboratory) at a tape speed of fifteen inches per second. American Microphone Company Microphones, Models D-33 and D-33A, were used, both in the field and in the laboratory.
