SEPTEMBER Tuscany Wine has literally been a part of the Tuscan civilization for over 3,000 years. From the time the ancient Etruscans settled in the gentle rolling hills of Tuscany, viticulture and wine production have been an important element of everyday life and indeed was even considered to be mystical. Tuscany is a much larger region than many people realize and it encompasses many different wine regions and climate types. The one thing most regions have in common is the selection of grape varietals. In general, Sangiovese is the dominant red varietal and Trebbiano is the dominant white varietal. Located in central Italy along the Tyrrhenian coast, Tuscany is home to some of the world’s most notable wine regions such as Chianti, Bolgheri, and Maremma. Since 2006, biodynamic principles are also employed. Il Ghizzano is an easy drinking wine, perfect for everyday consumption, but incredibly rich in personality and fruit. In 1995, Duccio Corsini planted 10 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot at Tenuta Marsiliana, on the property’s sand, silt and clay soils. The Marsiliana estate extends over nearly 3,000 hectares, and includes a vast landscape of woods, streams, fields, olive groves and vineyards. As his ancestor Tommaso Corsini before him, Duccio has redefined the estate, producing wines of power, robust with good structure and longevity. Deep ruby red color with some blue highlights. Bordeaux-like nose with light notes of black- berries, blueberries, black pepper and hints of savory herbs. Fresh fruit, medium bodied, firm tannins and a touch of the sea. Pairs beautifully with roasted meat dishes as well as a variety of cheeses such as Gruyere, sharp cheddar, and Parmigiano Reggiano. Fattoria di Magliano Sprawled across 90 hectares, Fattoria di Magliano is a new winery founded in 1997 by former shoemaker Agostino Lenci, he immediately began planting vines and building a modern winemaking facility, concentrating on producing wines of the finest quality. Winemaker Graziana Grassini, alongside consultant Roberto Da Valle, works in a 1500 square meter cellar to create extraordinary wines. The tasting room and bottling center are located on the top floor above ground, while the vinifi- cation and barrel-rooms are underground to maintain ideal ageing conditions. After a 10 year education in chemical sciences, it is not easy to disengage from the scientific and rely on the senses to create a wine; however, Graziana quickly realized the necessity. A wine must be created in the vineyard, the only contribution a lab can have is to perfect any minor flaws. In addition to running two labs in Tuscany authorized by the Italian Ministry of Political Agriculture for certification of wines destined for export, Graziana has been a con- sultant for various wineries throughout Italy. “To see the creation of a wine through to the end is like falling in love,” she says.
