A period of rapid evolution in bass playing and its effect on music through the lens of Memphis, TN Ben Walsh 2011 Rhodes Institute for Regional Studies 1 Music, like all other art forms, has multiple influences. Social movements, personal adventures and technology have all affected art in meaningful ways. The understanding of these different influences is essential for the full enjoyment and appreciation of any work of art. As a musician, specifically a bassist, I am interested in understanding, as thoroughly as 1 http://rockabillyhall.com/SunRhythm1.html (date accessed 7 /15/11). possible, the different influences contributing to the development of the bass’ roles in popular music, and specifically the sound that the bass is producing relative to the other sounds in the ensemble. I am looking to identifying some of the key influences that determined the sound that the double and electric bass guitar relative to the ensembles they play in. I am choosing to focus largely on the 1950’s as this is the era of the popularization of the electric bass guitar. With this new instrument, the sound, feeling and groove of rhythm sections were dramatically changed. However, during my research it became apparent that this shift involving the electric bass and amplification began earlier than the 1950’s. My research had to reach back to the early 1930’s. The defining characteristics of musical styles from the 1950’s forward are very much shaped by the possibilities of the electric bass guitar. This statement is not taking away from the influence and musical necessity that is the double bass, but the sound of the electric bass guitar is a defining characteristic of music from the 1950s onward. -

At the time our play takes place, this sound revolution was just beginning. And Sam Phillips was its greatest architect. Sam knew the awesome power of music from the time he was in grade school. The favorite nephew of his mute Aunt Emma, he learned that rhythmic gestures could make a wordless language. He soon understood that the language of music could transcend the borders of the physical; and of social status, color, age, and even time. Sam’s Uncle Silas (not his uncle at all, but a black man who’d fallen on hard times) moved into the Phillips’ house when Sam was just a boy. -

Since its dedication in 2003, the spectacular 20’ x 12’ mural honoring Haley has attracted visitors from around the world to the corner of Jackson and “A” Streets. Rock Around the Clock by Bill Haley and his Comets in July 1955 became the first rock ‘n’ roll record to achieve Number One status on the bestseller lists and become the first international rock ‘n’ roll hit. Bill Haley was one of the first to be inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in 1987. Haley’s music has transcended the generation gap, with hits such as Rock Around the Clock, Shake Rattle and Roll, See You Later Alligator, and Razzle Dazzle reaching new listeners and remaining as popular today as they were more than 50 years ago. The Original Comets were in town to perform these and other hits at RioFest. The band includes Joe Ambrose on sax, John Grande on piano, Marshall Lytle on bass, Frank Beecher on guitar and Dick Richards on drums. Artist John Aretakis created the Bill Haley mural under the auspices of the Harlingen Mural Project, a new program to create public artworks to beautify downtown Harlingen, interpret aspects of the city’s history and heritage, and attract visitors.
