Our mission is facilitated by a unique blend of on- and off-site researchers coupled with an extensive portfolio of education and public outreach (EPO) projects. This past year has seen SSI grow from $4.1M to over $4.3M in grants, an increase of nearly 6%. We now have over fi fty full and part-time staff. SSI’s support comes mostly from NASA and the National Sci- ence Foundation. Our Board of Directors now numbers eight. Their guidance and vision—along with that of senior management—have created an environment that continues to draw world-class scientists to the Institute and allows us to develop educa- tion and outreach programs that benefi t millions of people worldwide. SSI has a robust scientifi c research program that includes robotic missions such as the Mars Exploration Rovers, fl ight missions such as Cassini and the Spitzer Space Telescope, Hubble Space Telescope (HST), and ground-based programs. Dr. Tom McCord joined the Institute in 2005 as a Senior Research Scientist. He directs the Bear Fight Center, a 3,000 square-foot research and meeting facility in Washington state. -

JUKEBOX JAZZ by Ian Muldoon* ____________________________________________________ n 1955 Bill Haley’s Rock Around the Clock was the first rock and roll record to become number one on the hit parade. It had made a stunning introduction in I the opening moments to a film called Blackboard Jungle. But at that time my favourite record was one by Lionel Hampton. I was not alone. Me and my three jazz loving friends couldn’t be bothered spending hard-earned cash on rock and roll records. Our quartet consisted of clarinet, drums, bass and vocal. Robert (nickname Orgy) was learning clarinet; Malcolm (Slim) was going to learn drums (which in due course he did under the guidance of Gordon LeCornu, a percussionist and drummer in the days when Sydney still had a thriving show scene); Dave (Bebop) loved the bass; and I was the vocalist a la Joe (Bebop) Lane. We were four of 120 RAAF apprentices undergoing three years boarding school training at Wagga Wagga RAAF Base from 1955-1957. Of course, we never performed together but we dreamt of doing so and luckily, dreaming was not contrary to RAAF regulations. Wearing an official RAAF beret in the style of Thelonious Monk or Dizzy Gillespie, however, was. A period of rapid evolution in bass playing and its effect on music through the lens of Memphis, TN Ben Walsh 2011 Rhodes Institute for Regional Studies 1 Music, like all other art forms, has multiple influences. Social movements, personal adventures and technology have all affected art in meaningful ways. The understanding of these different influences is essential for the full enjoyment and appreciation of any work of art. As a musician, specifically a bassist, I am interested in understanding, as thoroughly as 1 http://rockabillyhall.com/SunRhythm1.html (date accessed 7 /15/11). possible, the different influences contributing to the development of the bass’ roles in popular music, and specifically the sound that the bass is producing relative to the other sounds in the ensemble. I am looking to identifying some of the key influences that determined the sound that the double and electric bass guitar relative to the ensembles they play in. I am choosing to focus largely on the 1950’s as this is the era of the popularization of the electric bass guitar. With this new instrument, the sound, feeling and groove of rhythm sections were dramatically changed. However, during my research it became apparent that this shift involving the electric bass and amplification began earlier than the 1950’s. My research had to reach back to the early 1930’s. The defining characteristics of musical styles from the 1950’s forward are very much shaped by the possibilities of the electric bass guitar. This statement is not taking away from the influence and musical necessity that is the double bass, but the sound of the electric bass guitar is a defining characteristic of music from the 1950s onward. -

The m usic is the m ain thing. ’ ’ He was right about the music: it was the way he played the tune that made ‘ ‘Shake, Rattle and Roll’ ’ a landmark success. Haley was BOBBY “ BLUE” BLAND trying to streamline the beat, to make it easy for an audience to dance, clap and sing along. 39^ LEZIONE DI ROCK (1^ ANNO 2018/2019) Al termine di una calda estate, in tutti i sensi, e spero per tutti, di piacevoli e distensive vacanze, puntuale ritorna il corso di storia della musica “rock”, che taglia quest’anno il traguardo della quinta stagione, e che speriamo possa trovare la più larga partecipazione possibile, e trasmettere il consueto entusiasmo in tutti voi. Dopo aver trattato la materia da un punto di vista monografico, e per genere musicale, quest’anno analizziamo il rapporto tra cinema e “rock”, tenendo sempre aperta l’agenda per incontro/incontri, con personaggi della musica italiana, che abbiano avuto e/o abbiano un ruolo importante, influente e carismatico, nello svolgersi del percorso. Negli Stati Uniti e, di riflesso, in Europa, agli inizi degli anni ’50, nasce la nuova categoria culturale dei giovani. Tale categoria diventa protagonista in specifici ambiti artistici, quali la musica ed il cinema, producendo una serie di gusti estetici, modelli di comportamento e stili d’abbigliamento, che incidono profondamente sul costume sociale, ed arrivano a definire una vera e propria mitologia giovanile. Il termine “teenager”, inventato in America, viene importato in Gran Bretagna, ed applicato dai settimanali popolari come il “Picture Post”, alle culture dell’“adolescente sommerso”, della gioventù operaia i cui rituali di consumo, gusti musicali e scelte di beni, sono nella misura più evidente, condizionati dall’influsso americano. Il termine “teenager” sanziona la spaccatura definitiva tra infanzia e adolescenza. La spaccatura significa denaro, e l’invenzione del termine, è intimamente connessa alla creazione del mercato giovanile. Finalmente vengono forniti una nuova gamma di beni ed opportunità commerciali per il tempo libero, al fine di assorbire la moneta eccedente, di cui per la prima volta si presume disponga liberamente la gioventù operaia, e per garantire un ambito interno, nel quale la gioventù possa coltivare la propria pura identità, non scalfita dalle rappresentazioni equivoche della cultura familiare.
