  • Cdr (R) Firoz Shah
Cdr (R) Firoz Shah (The second principal of Cadet College, Petaro: 1965-1972) By Kazi Zulkader Siddiqui (671/Latif) If you were asked to identify one unforgettable personality of the 1965-72 era of Petaro, the answer would be none other than its principal Cdr (R) Firoz Shah. “Commander Sahib” (we always called him that, as if there was, or is, no other commander) had a profound effect on our lives. The “Commander” to us was much greater than any general. In retrospect, even though he is of a normal height and stature, Commander Sahib appeared to be a towering figure during those good old days. In sufistic parlance, the Commander was Petaro and Petaro was the Commander, though never the twain shall meet Cdr.(r) Firoz Shah presenting his report at again. a parents' day celebration in late 1960s His dynamism, his energy, his patience, and love for the college and its students were simply remarkable. However, he had a soft corner for sports and sportsmen. After all, it was through his efforts and leadership that the college won the ICCST consecutively for four years. He brought about the "Famous Forties". During a discussion with him a few years ago, Commander Sahib pensively remarked that real education can be had only “in the field”. That is what Petaro truly aimed at, by providing that balance between studies and physical training and sports. Born in 1913 near Chakwal, Cdr (R) Firoz Shah has had a very fulfilling career. He graduated from the Punjab University, Kitchener’s College, Nowgong (in undivided India), and later from the Royal Navy College in London.

  • The Marked Reduction of the Indus River Flow
The marked reduction of the Indus river flow downstream from the Kotry barrage: can the mangrove ecosystems of Pakistan survive in the resulting hypersaline environment? Item Type article Authors Ahmed, S.I. Download date 01/10/2021 19:37:14 Link to Item http://hdl.handle.net/1834/31900 Pakistan Journal of Marine Sciences, Vol.1(2), 145-153, 1992. REVIEW ARTICLE THE MARKED REDUCTION OF THE INDUS RIVER FLOW DOWNSTREAM FROM THE KOTRI BARRAGE: CAN THE MANGROVE ECOSYSTEMS OF PAKISTAN· SURVIVE IN THE RESULTING HYPERSALINE ENVIRONMENT? Saiyed I. Ahmed School of Oceanography, University of Washington, Seattle, WA 98195, U.SA. APPLICATION OF KNOWLEDGE ,OF MANGROVE ECOSYSTEMS FROM AROUND THE WORLD TO THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE PRESENT STATUS OF MANGROVES OF PAKISTAN. The global inventory of obligate mangroves consists of 54 species belonging to 20 genera in 16 families and are estimated to occupy about 23 million hectares of shel tered coastal intertidal land (Tomlinson, 1986; Lugo and Snedaker, 1974; Chapman, 1975, 1976). These are regarded as 11 obligate11 mangroves as they are 11 restricted11 to coastal saline intertidal environments compared to 11 facultative 11 mangroves which may develop in non-coastal environments. In a general classification scheme basically two groups of mangroves can be identified: (a) the Eastern Group: mangroves on the coasts of Indian and Western Pacific Oceans, (b) the Western Group: Those on the coasts of the Americas, West Indies and West Africa. Generally speaking, the Eastern Group of mangroves is richer in species diversity with mangroves in India and southeast Asia exhibiting species diversity of > 20 with generally healthy and luxurious plant growth.

  • Our Teachers Through Their Autographs
Our Teachers through their Autographs By Kazi Zulkader Siddiqui, 671/Latif House Published in Petaro and Petarians Over 50 Years © Edited and Published by Kazi Zulkader Siddiqui, 2007 I have a little autograph book that has been one of my greatest treasures since I left Cadet College Petaro in 1969. It contains autographs of most of my teachers and some close friends at Petaro. This small book is a treasure-house of the sentiments expressed, and reflective of the character of our teachers and my colleagues. Whenever I flip through its pages, it reminds me of so many things that I have been taught as a child. It is those values that were ingrained in me during my formative years which indeed bring out the best in me. I am indeed thankful to my teachers and my mentors for all I gained from them – for their words of wisdom and for their well wishes and blessings. Cdr.(R) Firoz Shah’s Autograph When I approached Cdr. Firoz Shah – who was our principal in 1969 – for his autograph, it didn’t take him a minute to write his thoughts down immediately. Our final Intermediate exams had been delayed due to the disturbances and agitation against Field Marshall Ayub Khan all over Pakistan. It was already the month of July, and Petaro was simmering. Only the 12th class was still around in the college to sit for the final Board exams. All other cadets had gone home much earlier. On the 21st of July 1969, the first man ever in the history of mankind – Neil Armstrong – and his colleague landed on the moon.
