Mercy Corps, Pakistan ͳ EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The monsoon rains that started in the second week of August 2011 triggered serious flooding affecting more than 5.3 million people. It is reported to have destroyed or damaged nearly one million houses and inundated 4.2 million acres of cropland, prompting the Government of Pakistan to call for support from the United Nations. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) for Sindh mobilized its resources relatively quickly, however their response was far too limited compared with the needs of so many people. During the contingency planning phase, they estimated resources adequate to the temporary care of some 50,000 IDPs. The situation had worsened nearly a month after the start of the emergency and the national authorities requested international support. At that point, the NDMA and PDMA indicated that between 5.3 million flood-affected people of Lower Sindh were in urgent need of assistance.

1 Update – As of 13th November, 2011 Introduction – Cause of the Disaster While the memories of devastating 2010 floods are still fresh, another deluge has hit the province of Sindh. Year 2011 monsoon rains started from 10th August caused havoc and created a flood like situation in southern districts of Sindh and the rains are continued increasing the miseries of people in the affected areas. District Badin, Mirpurkhas, Tando Allahyar, Tando Mohammad Khan, Tharparkar, Shaheed Benazirabad,Thatta and Umerkot are among the worst hit areas and millions of people are stranded in flooded villages. Various breaches in canals and drains connected with Left Bank Outfall Drain (LBOD) have left thousands of villages inundated. A large number of people, including women and children, have been displaced who have taken shelter on road side, canal embankments and other nearby government buildings. Some people have lost their lives, thousands have become homeless, cattle died, and standing crops have perished. Communication system in the affected areas has also been severely disturbed resulting in further miseries. • Muslim Saints of South Asia
MUSLIM SAINTS OF SOUTH ASIA This book studies the veneration practices and rituals of the Muslim saints. It outlines the principle trends of the main Sufi orders in India, the profiles and teachings of the famous and less well-known saints, and the development of pilgrimage to their tombs in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. A detailed discussion of the interaction of the Hindu mystic tradition and Sufism shows the polarity between the rigidity of the orthodox and the flexibility of the popular Islam in South Asia. Treating the cult of saints as a universal and all pervading phenomenon embracing the life of the region in all its aspects, the analysis includes politics, social and family life, interpersonal relations, gender problems and national psyche. The author uses a multidimen- sional approach to the subject: a historical, religious and literary analysis of sources is combined with an anthropological study of the rites and rituals of the veneration of the shrines and the description of the architecture of the tombs. Anna Suvorova is Head of Department of Asian Literatures at the Institute of Oriental Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow. A recognized scholar in the field of Indo-Islamic culture and liter- ature, she frequently lectures at universities all over the world. She is the author of several books in Russian and English including The Poetics of Urdu Dastaan; The Sources of the New Indian Drama; The Quest for Theatre: the twentieth century drama in India and Pakistan; Nostalgia for Lucknow and Masnawi: a study of Urdu romance. She has also translated several books on pre-modern Urdu prose into Russian.

  • A Preliminary Study of Thukri Net Fishery at Sonmiani Bay
INT. J. BIOL. BIOTECH., 4 (SPECIAL ISSUE): 83-87, 2007. A PRELIMINARY STUDY OF THUKRI NET FISHERY AT SONMIANI BAY Allah Bukhsh Baloch and Q.B. Kazmi Marine Reference Collection & Resource Centre, University of Karachi ABSTRACT Key-words: INTRODUCTION Balochistan coast extends about 772 km between the Hub river in the east and border of Iran in the west. The coast may be characterized by a bay, the ”Sonmiani Bay”, backed by a lagoon called the Miani Hor (1,600km2) (Fig-1). The lagoon displays a variety of geomorphic and biological features which are very important for the ecological study of the coast. The coastal area of Balochistan is known to have a well diversified marine fauna and flora. The fish fauna is also diverse and more than 5oo fish species, 12 of squids/cuttle fish/ octopi, 5 species of lobsters and 5 species of shrimp are recorded. The main resources of Balochistan have not been fully exploited except for fish. The total fish production of Balochistan coast during the period from 1991-to-2002 showed steadily increasing trend. The production increased from 107081mt, to 123000mt in 2000. The rate of increase was 1.47% per year (Table-1). In the year 2000, fish and fishery export products of 84.693mt, a valued of Rs. 7.878 billion were exported from Pakistan. During the year 2000 out of total production, 123000mt (25.9%) were contributed by Balochistan (Source: FAO & M.F.D. 2001). In addition the total marine resources of Pakistani water is estimated to be about 600,000 mt/year, out of which inshore waters are 500,000 mt and offshore water (EEZ) are 100,000 mt approximately.

The land of the five rivers and Sindh; Copyright © www.panhwar.com 2 PREFACE. My object in publishing these “Sketches” is to furnish travelers passing through Sindh and the Punjab with a short historical and descriptive account of the country and places of interest between Karachi, Multan, Lahore, Peshawar, and Delhi. I mainly confine my remarks to the more prominent cities and towns adjoining the railway system. Objects of antiquarian interest and the principal arts and manufactures in the different localities are briefly noticed. I have alluded to the independent adjoining States, and I have added outlines of the routes to Kashmir, the various hill sanitaria, and of the marches which may be made in the interior of the Western Himalayas. In order to give a distinct and definite idea as to the situation of the different localities mentioned, their position with reference to the various railway stations is given as far as possible. The names of the railway stations and principal places described head each article or paragraph, and in the margin are shown the minor places or objects of interest in the vicinity.
