    1 Update – As of 13th November, 2011 Introduction – Cause of the Disaster While the memories of devastating 2010 floods are still fresh, another deluge has hit the province of Sindh. Year 2011 monsoon rains started from 10th August caused havoc and created a flood like situation in southern districts of Sindh and the rains are continued increasing the miseries of people in the affected areas. District Badin, Mirpurkhas, Tando Allahyar, Tando Mohammad Khan, Tharparkar, Shaheed Benazirabad,Thatta and Umerkot are among the worst hit areas and millions of people are stranded in flooded villages. Due to the heavy and uninterrupted rains number of canals and surface drains have over topped due to excess water discharges. Various breaches in canals and drains connected with Left Bank Outfall Drain (LBOD) have left thousands of villages inundated. A large number of people, including women and children, have been displaced who have taken shelter on road side, canal embankments and other nearby government buildings. Some people have lost their lives, thousands have become homeless, cattle died, and standing crops have perished. Communication system in the affected areas has also been severely disturbed resulting in further miseries. Some of the mobile networks are not working or reception is very poor, similarly internet services are also often not available Proactive Role of NRSP – Rapid Assessment of the Disaster NRSP operates in almost all flood affected area of the District Badin, Mirpurkhas, Thatta, Shaheed Benazirabad, Tando Allahyar and Tando Mohammad Khan. NRSP has been able to conduct a rapid assessment of flood damages. To complete this assessment, the organisation has capitalised its network of Local Support Organizations, Community Organisations and activists to facilitate information collection providing a full and up to date overview of the scale of the disaster, and the location of those affected.

The answers have been provided by NADRA. New queries are documented following feedback from beneficiaries/affectees and hence, further editions will follow. 1. What is the Pakistan Card? The Pakistan Card is an initiative launched by the Government of Sindh to provide cash grants to people affected by the Monsoon floods of 2011. The cash grant will be distributed through an ATM Card, along the same lines as the Watan Card. 2. What is the difference between the Watan and Pakistan cards? The Watan Card was a Government of Pakistan initiative – issued by NADRA – to families affected by the catastrophic floods of 2010. This card provided the beneficiary one payment of Rs 20,000 under Phase I and a payment of Rs. 40,000 (in two tranches of Rs. 20,000) under Phase II. The Pakistan Card is meant for those affected by the rains and flash floods of 2011 and should not be confused with Phase II of the Watan Card project, which has recently started from Khyber‐Pakhtunkhwa. 3. Which areas will be catered to by the Pakistan Card? So far the Government of Pakistan in association with the Government of Sindh has decided to issue Pakistan Cards in thirteen (13) severely affected districts of Sindh, Thatta, Badin, Tharparkar, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tando Allahyar and Shaheed Benazirabad (formerly Nawabshah), Mirpur Khas, Ghotki, Larkana, Jamshoro, Sanghar, Mitiyari, Khairpur. 4. Jakhrani Department of Chemistry, Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur, Sindh, Pakistan Email: *[email protected] ABSTRACT Contamination of drinking water especially with heavy metals is now a major issue from both the public health and the environmental health perspectives. In present work we are reporting a multivariate study for the concentrations of Arsenic and Iron in groundwater n=334 collected from Gambat, Khairpur, Sindh, Pakistan during year 2008. The analysis was performed using Hydride Generator Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (HG-ASS) Perkin Elmer A-100 coupled with MHS-15. Arsenic and Iron were evaluated in hand pump and tube well water sample with detection limit 0.02µgL-1and 01µgL-1 respectively. The level of arsenic was found in hand pump and tube well water ranged from <0.01 to 126µgL-1 and <0.01-38 µgl-1 respectively. While level of Iron was found in the rage of <0.004-1.6mgL-1 and <0.004-1.5mgL-1 in hand pump and tube well groundwater respectively. It has observed that in most of the samples level of these both elements were above than the maximum permissible level of World Health Organization. Keywords: Arsenic; Groundwater; Gambat 1.
