© ephemera 2007 articles ISSN 1473-2866 e phemera www.ephemeraweb.org theory & politics in organization volume 7(1): 203-232 Immaterial Labour and World Order: An Evaluation of a Thesis* Ben Trott abstract This paper argues that Hardt and Negri’s claim that immaterial labour is becoming hegemonic, in the sense that is informing and influencing other forms of production and social life itself, goes some considerable way towards providing a theoretical framework within which we can make sense of the current and ongoing processes of transformation within the global political economy. It will be argued, however, that whilst many of the criticisms which have been levied at Hardt and Negri’s work have been based, to an extent, upon a failure to comprehend the tendential nature of their argument, there nevertheless exist a number of real and important weaknesses in their work. In particular, it will be argued that the potential power of Hardt and Negri’s revolutionary subject, ‘the multitude’, is over-stated in their work. We are amidst a process of global transformation. Within the most advanced capitalist economies at least, many of the icons of the Fordist era have been steadily disappearing: mass productive processes geared towards providing cheap, standardised commodities for mass markets; full employment; ‘blue-collar’ work; the welfare state; mass political parties and trade unions. Within the academy, in the media, and throughout popular culture more generally, the emergence of a ‘post-Fordist’, ‘post-industrial’ or ‘post- modern’ reality – alongside processes of ‘globalisation’ (variously conceived1) – have been widely debated.2 A number of overlapping, yet nevertheless distinct, schools of thought have sought to develop a theoretical and analytic framework to make sense of: the (passing) Fordist era; the origins of its crisis; the shape of things to come; and the agents of these (ongoing) processes of change. -

The Social Life of Gender Dedicated to Saba Mahmood, whose brilliant scholarship has challenged and inspired our thinking about the meaning and goals of feminism. CHAPTER Politicizing Gender 9 Gowri Vijayakumar and Katherine Maich The previous chapters have examined how gendered norms, practices, ideologies, and institutions shape social life. This chapter explores how movements create changes in gender relations by tracing the history of feminist activism since the late 19th century. Feminist activism is typically described as involving three “waves”: the first wave of the late 1800s and early 1900s, when women organized for voting and other legal rights; the second wave of the 1960s and 1970s, when women organized for workplace equality and against sexual violence; and the third wave of the 1990s and beyond, when the category of “woman” increasingly became contested and feminists of color pushed for an understanding of gender and sexuality with attention to race, class, and colonialism. This chapter takes a different approach: Instead of describing feminist movements as consecutive waves, we will look at feminist movements as involving multiple “currents” that sometimes intersect, sometimes join, and sometimes emerge in tension with one another. The chapter shows that like other social movements, feminist activism has historically been influenced by and reproduced multiple social inequalities. Though the chapter primarily examines feminisms in the United States, it also looks at the global context for feminist activism and the powerful influence of feminists in Europe, Asia, Latin America, and Africa on U.S. feminisms. The chapter concludes by showing how activists around the world challenge and transform gender relations in many ways, including in ways not typically defined as feminist. -

TRANSFEMINISM Elia A.G. Arfini THE ENTANGLEMENTS BETWEEN queer, trans and feminist com- plicate the investigation of transfeminism and its genealogies, with particular attention to the continental dimension. Transfeminism is understood here not as a monolithic theoretical concept but rather as a field of practices and discourses, cultures and desires, struggles, and locations. The European, and Southern-European in particular, expres- sion of the field is certainly less codified then its Anglo-American counterpart, yet we argue it is precisely its blurriness, situated and anti- institutional character that allows transfeminism to be a useful keyword to queer the 2020s. Transfeminism is a keyword indeed, an instance of the many iterations of trans as a troubling agent. “Trans-” is the “evil twin” (Stryker 2004) of many academic areas of inquiry and political cultures, less definitive then “post-,” it nonetheless indicate a displace- ment, a pressure on boundaries, an expansive move (Stryker et al. 2008). Transgender, in particular, invites us to confront nothing less than the limits of our desires and the gender binary infrastructure that sustains them. The term transfeminism is also marked by a capacity to be situat- ed and very specific to the conditions of its emergence and use ( Bettcher and Stryker 2016). On the one hand, in the Anglophone area, transfeminism is under- stood as a political standpoint of inclusion of trans women into the lib- eration struggles of all women. THEY CALL IT LOVE WAGES FOR HOUSEWORK AND EMOTIONAL REPRODUCTION ALVA GOTBY A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of West London for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy September 2019 1 Abstract This thesis is a study of two sets of literature on capitalism, gender, and emotion. Firstly, it explores the writings of the Wages for Housework (WFH) movement – a network of Marxist feminist activist groups, founded in 1972, whose activity was centred on women’s reproductive labour. Secondly, this thesis draws on the body of writing on emotional labour. Coined by Arlie Hochschild in 1983, this term describes the work of producing emotional states in another person. While WFH were attentive to emotional aspects of reproductive labour, their writings mention emotional labour only in passing. Hochschild’s work concentrates on emotional labour in particular service occupations, but neglects broader issues of social reproduction. Synthesising these bodies of work, I introduce the concept of emotional reproduction, thus applying the WFH perspective to the theme introduced by Hochschild. Emotional reproduction denotes processes across waged and unwaged forms of labour, intended to enhance the relative emotional wellbeing of a recipient, to the extent that they are able to participate in waged labour. These processes often take place in the private sphere, and are constructed as a typically feminine activity. I argue for the importance of understanding these processes as a form of labour, which is integral to capitalist social reproduction. Through the notion of emotional reproduction, this thesis offers an account of gendered subjectivity. It highlights the construction of gendered and historically specific forms of skill, which are essential for emotional labour. -

An Affective Feminist Materialism?: Reproduction, Marxist Feminism, and Affective Capacity John McMahon, The Graduate Center, CUNY [email protected] Prepared for 2016 Western Political Science Association Annual Meeting **Draft: Please do not cite or circulate without permission Abstract: How can affect theory – particularly a notion of the body understood in terms of affective capacity – extend Marxist feminist concerns with social reproduction? To what extent can affect contribute to different elaborations of Marxist feminism? I answer these questions by theorizing Marxist feminism through affect theory’s embodied concepts of capacity, force, and power. If one of the central tasks of Marxist feminism is to analyze the material basis of patriarchal control, then I contend that affect theory and Marxist feminism are essential to achieving each other’s critical potential. The first part of this paper analyzes the Marxist feminist concept of “social reproduction” in terms of affect. The second part engages an affective reading of three thinkers in the Marxist feminist tradition, rearticulating one particularly vital concept developed by each: Gayle Rubin and the sex/gender system; Lise Vogel and social reproduction; and Rosemary Hennessy and the need for sensation and affect. I conclude by sketching the implications of my reading for the concept of freedom, which is complicated by Black feminist critiques of Marxist feminism. Ultimately this paper – by exploring both the generative connections and the distinct disjunctions between affect and thinkers within Marxist feminism – argues for the continued vitality of Marxist feminism for inquiry into affect, into Marx, into labor, into materialism, and into capitalism. 1 An Affective Feminist Materialism?: Reproduction, Marxist Feminism, and Affective Capacity Introduction Not all bodies circulate, produce, and affectively interact in the same way within the relations and modes of capitalism. -

HOUSEWORK AND SOCIAL SUBVERSION: WAGES, HOUSEWORK, AND FEMINIST ACTIVISM IN 1970S ITALY AND CANADA CHRISTINA ROUSSEAU A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN HUMANITIES YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO December 2016 © Christina Rousseau, 2016 Abstract My dissertation, Housework and Social Subversion: Wages, Housework, and Feminist Activism in 1970s Italy and Canada, presents a history of the Wages for Housework movements in Italy and Canada (1972-1978), looking at the parallel development of autonomist feminist politics in these locations. Based on a series of interviews with feminists involved in the movement, my dissertation highlights the significant political value in the way the group’s theoretical perspective influenced our current understanding of social reproduction. Social reproduction refers to the unpaid activities associated with family and societal maintenance – procreation, socialization, and nurturance – as well as paid work in social sectors such as health care, education, childcare, and social services. In the context of Wages for Housework, my dissertation re-examines the movement’s understandings of wages, housework, and the gendered relations of production in the home. In critiquing the capitalist, patriarchal, imperialist nuclear family, they re- conceptualized wages and housework in a way that allowed for the uncovering of the most hidden aspect of housework: emotional labour and care. Looking at the parallel development of Wages for Housework movements in Italy and Canada, I also highlight the emergence of similar tensions regarding the demand for wages and the role of the working class housewife in their analyses. -

Palazzo, Hunter College, CUNY, [email protected] Prepared for delivery at the annual meeting of the Western Political Science Association, Las Vegas, NV, April 2-4, 2015. This is a work in-progress. Please do not quote without permission. Abstract This paper is about the location of women in the “social factory.” Their demand to be included in the class struggle derives from their development of this concept in the early 1970s. I provide an interpretation of their critique of the concept “immaterial labor” as developed in Hardt and Negri’s Empire trilogy, by examining the “social factory” as a historical category. I frame the discussion around initial formulations in Panzieri and Tronti as a useful heuristic for later depictions of the factory-society relation. In its simplest terms, these differences derive from an understanding of how “society” becomes a “factory.” This is, above all, a work of recovery by taking a journey into the workerist “social factory” in order to theoretically demonstrate the divergent paths and concerns that emerged from this group of thinkers around place of unwaged reproductive labor in “autonomous Marxism.” 2 It took years for the other subjects – men – to acknowledge the meaning of women’s denunciation – that is the immense feminine labor that went into reproducing them – and then for their behavior to change.
