MEDIA RELEASE INTERNATIONAL LAUNCH EVENT OF THE LIBERATION ROUTE EUROPE HIKING TRAILS A unique international trail initiative to keep the memory of WWII alive Brussels, 15 July 2021 – The LRE Foundation is happy to announce the next evolution of the Liberation Route Europe, a certified Council of Europe Cultural Route connecting places and people that mark Europe’s liberation from occupation during World War II. The launch event will take place on 22 July at 3 pm CEST when the Foundation will present the brand new European-wide system of hiking trails along the Liberation Route Europe. Developed in collaboration with hiking associations across Europe, the new hiking trails link museums, memorials, cemeteries and historical sites along the Allied Forces’ advance in the last phase of WWII and aim to stretch for 10.000 km. The hiking experience is accompanied by the new Liberation Route Europe website and travel planner that allows the public to read and listen to many stories about WWII and plan their journey along the hiking trails. Rémi Praud, Managing Director of the LRE Foundation: “We are excited to launch this new system of hiking trails connecting regions, sites and historical places across Europe. These trails are a new meaningful, and sustainable way to experience the Liberation Route Europe. This is only the beginning. We are excited to expand to new regions and countries in the upcoming years.” On the morning of 22 July, the LRE Foundation, in collaboration with the Best Defence Foundation, will escort seven U.S. veterans who served in Germany in 1945 for a visit with press to the German-Russian Museum Berlin- Karlshorst. -

The crucial tests facing Europe’s commitment to open society will be how it treats minorities such as Muslims and ensures equal rights for all in a climate of rapidly expanding diversity. The Open Society Institute’s At Home in Europe project is working to address these issues through monitoring and advocacy activities that examine the position of Muslims and other minorities in Europe. One of the project’s key efforts is this series of reports on Muslim communities in the 11 EU cities of Amsterdam, Antwerp, Berlin, Copenhagen, Hamburg, Leicester, London, Marseille, Paris, Rotterdam, and Stockholm. The reports aim to increase understanding of the needs and aspirations of diverse Muslim communities by examining how public policies in selected cities have helped or hindered the political, social, and economic participation of Muslims. By fostering new dialogue and policy initiatives between Muslim communities, local officials, and international policymakers, the At Home in Europe project seeks to improve the participation and inclusion of Muslims in the wider society while enabling them to preserve the cultural, linguistic, and religious practices that are important to their identities. Strümpfel - Technische Universität Berlin Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Chair of Flight Guidance and Air Transport Marchstr. 12, 10587 Berlin, Germany [email protected] [email protected] Abstract Since the civil air transportation sector has been growing significantly, with an increase not only in number of flights, but also with regards to their environmental impact, emissions have been growing to the same degree. Residents in areas around airports are therefore exposed to an increasing strain of noise pollution. Past scientific research has identified large potential through the implementation of operational noise abatement procedures. The following paper will present a case study concerning noise abatement procedures during departure flight phase as a measure to reduce aircraft noise. The study was conducted on behalf of the aircraft noise commission council of Berlin-Tegel airport. The main objective of this research was to assess whether the reduction of aircraft noise pollution can be achieved by noise abatement procedures, which are specifically adapted for the purpose of night-flights. Therefore, regular domestic overnight airmail flights were conducted as test flights between Berlin-Tegel airport and Stuttgart-Echterdingen airport. Those flights, which were performed from August 2016 to May 2017, qualify perfectly for this study, due to their specific schedule and uniform testing environment combined with a higher general focus on night-time noise immissions. In order to develop sustainable operational procedures for aircraft noise reduction, a holistic approach is nec- essary. -

The emphasis is on the effects of a modified urban vegetation cover and roof albedo on near-surface air temperatures. Five EHEs with a duration of 5 days or more are identified for the period 2000 to 2009. A reference simulation is carried out for each EHE with current vegetation cover, roof albedo and urban canopy parameters (UCPs), and is evaluated with temperature observations from weather stations in Berlin and its surroundings. The derivation of the UCPs from an impervious surface map and a 3-D building data set is detailed. Characteristics of the simulated urban heat island for each EHE are analysed in terms of these UCPs. In addition, six sensitivity runs are examined with a modified vegetation cover of each urban grid cell by À25%, 5% and 15%, with a roof albedo increased to 0.40 and 0.65, and with a combination of the largest vegetation cover and roof albedo, respectively. At the weather stations’ grid cells, the results show a maximum of the average diurnal change in air temperature during each EHE of 0.82 K and À0.48 K for the À25% and 15% vegetation covers, À0.50 K for the roof albedos of 0.65, and À0.63 K for the combined vegetation and albedo case. -

The Dahlem Workshops
The Dahlem Workshops History During the last half of the twentieth century, specialization in science greatly in- creased in response to advances achieved in technology and methodology. This trend, although positive in many respects, created barriers between disciplines and could have inhibited progress if left unchecked. Understanding the concepts and methodologies of related disciplines became a necessity. Reuniting the dis- ciplines to obtain a broader view of an issue became imperative, for problems rarely fall conveniently into the purview of a single scientific area. Interdisci- plinary communication and innovative problem solving within a conducive en- vironment were perceived as integral yet lacking to this process. In 1971, an initiative to create such an environment began within Germany’s scientific community. In discussions between the Deutsche Forschungsgemein- schaft (German Science Foundation) and the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft (Association for the Promotion of Science Research in Germany), researchers were consulted to compare the needs of the scientific community with existing approaches. It became apparent that something new was required: an approach that began with state-of-the-art knowledge and proceeded onward to challenge the boundaries of current understanding; a form truly interdisci- plinary in its problem-solving approach. As a result, the Stifterverband established Dahlem Konferenzen (the Dahlem Workshops) in cooperation with the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft in 1974.
