The number of deaths at level crossings is low in Britain compared with other countries, but tragically 44 people have died in recent years. SAFETY GUIDE / 2 How to use a level crossing There are different types of level crossing and they don’t all look the same. The main types you’re most likely to encounter are barrier crossings (full or half), or an open crossing. There are also footpath crossings, found mainly in rural areas. Barrier Crossings Full barrier crossings – What to look out for Full barrier crossings have warning lights and an alarm. Barriers cover the whole road and the alarm stops once the barriers are lowered. Red lights flashing after the train has passed means another train is coming soon Half barrier crossings – What to look out for Half barrier crossings have just one barrier that covers half the road and an alarm that continues until the barrier is raised again. STOP What to do At a barrier crossing, don’t go around or jump the barrier when it is closing or down. If you’re wearing headphones, take them off. Stay alert. WAIT STOP when you see the red lights flashing and hear the alarm ringing – stay behind the white line. WAIT if the red lights carry on flashing after the train has gone by – another train will be WALK passing soon. WALK only when the lights go off and the barriers open. Look both ways when you are crossing. SAFETY GUIDE / 3 Open crossings What to look out for These crossings have no barriers and may not have warning lights. Look out for the signs. Look both ways when you’re crossing STOP LOOK What to do Take extra care and stay alert. If you’re wearing headphones, take them off. LISTEN STOP when you reach the crossing. LOOK both ways to make sure nothing is coming. LISTEN carefully before you cross. Continue to look both ways when you’re crossing. The third rail has 750 volts passing through it. Overhead lines carry 25,000 volts – that’s 100 times greater than the power supply in your home. Always use a level crossing to cross the railway. – You may see danger warning signs at train stations and along the tracks. They are there to keep you safe. Never ignore a railway sign. SAFETY GUIDE / 5 Trespass and vandalism Trespass on the railway can have tragic consequences. In 2011, 50 people were killed after taking shortcuts and trespassing on the railway track, and there were 445 recorded near misses between trespassers and trains. Vandalism is when someone deliberately damages railway property. The most common types of vandalism that occur on the railway include graffiti, littering, fly-tipping and damaging railway property (such as fences, bridges, signs and tracks). Hitachi is also responsible for conducting operating trials to verify the reliability and ride comfort of the trains and for providing maintenance services after the trains start operation. The trains, which formally commenced commercial operation in December 2009, are helping to increase the speed of domestic services in Southeast England and it is anticipated that they will have an important role in transporting visitors between venues during the London 2012 Olympic Games.     Safety Bulletin #28 Railroads INDUSTRY WIDE LABOR-MANAGEMENT SAFETY COMMITTEE SAFETY BULLETIN #28 GUIDELINES FOR RAILROAD SAFETY These guidelines are recommendations for safely engaging in rail work, i.e., working onboard trains, in railroad yards, subways and elevated systems, or in the vicinity of railroad equipment. Railroads are private property requiring the railroad’s authorization to enter. Once authorization is given, everyone on scene must follow the railroad’s safety procedures to reduce hazards. There are strict rules governing rail work. These rules must be communicated to and followed by all cast and crew. Check with the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) and with the owner/operator for local regulations, specific guidelines, and required training. Additionally, each railroad property or transportation agency may have its own rules and training requirements. In many cases, everyone must receive training. PRIOR TO THE START OF RAIL WORK Prior to starting rail work, the Production, in conjunction with the railroad representative, will conduct a safety meeting with all involved personnel to acquaint cast and crew members with possible workplace risks. Consult with the appropriate Department Heads to determine if equipment, such as lighting, grip equipment, props, set dressing, electric generators or other equipment will be used. When using these items, ensure that they are properly secured and their use has been authorized by the railroad representative. Plan proper ventilation and exhaust when using electric generators. Electrical bonding may be necessary. Ensure conditions and weight loads of the work area and adjacent roads used for camera cars, camera cranes, horses, etc. are adequate for the intended work.

The paper presents possible environmental, energy and economical gains implied by replacing conventional traction vehicles with independently powered electric multiple units (IPEMU) on partially electrified suburban railways. IPEMUs can operate in two modes of power supply – using an overhead catenary or the on–board battery storage. Appropriate computer simulations were carried out in the Matlab program, indicating the parameters of storage electric multiple units. Streszczenie. W artykule wskazano na potencjalne korzyści energetyczne, środowiskowe i częściowo ekonomiczne wynikające z zastąpienia konwencjonalnych jednostek trakcyjnych nowymi zasobnikowymi zespołami elektrycznymi mogącymi się poruszać na liniach kolejowych częściowo niezelektryfikowanych. Experts argue President Trump should invest heavily in public transportation. President Obama, April 16, 2009 The environment has an impact on almost everything in our society. Especially, when it comes to the transportation industry in Europe and the United States. Trains emit carbon emissions into the environment, but the exact amount varies between the U.S and Europe. To understand the difference, we must first go back to the beginning before electrification.
