2 From the Mayor’s Desk

Friends and Neighbors, Welcome to 2020! There are so many exciting things planned for this year that make me proud to be Mayor of McHenry. It’s hard to believe that this is the 3rd year of the McHenry ShamRocks the Fox St. Patrick’s Day Celebration. This year the event will be held on Saturday, March 14th and Sunday, March 15th. The weekend will kick off with the Shamrock Shuffle 5k, followed by the dyeing of the Fox River and St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Saturday, and close with fireworks from Miller Point on Sunday evening. In between, enjoy live music, beer, and children’s activities on Miller Point during both days. Visit www.visitmchenrycounty.com/ Shamrocksthefox for a detailed schedule. Thursday night City Band Concerts and Farmers Market begin in May, Green Street Cruise Nights start Monday, June 8th, and the McHenry Downtown Business Association Taste of Summer takes place on Saturday, June 13th, as does the annual Kiwanis Soap Box Derby. New in 2020 is the 1st R.I.S.E. Concert. My beautiful wife Amber and I started the R.I.S.E. Up Foundation as a means to raise funds for the development of family-oriented projects that may not otherwise be able to be completed in the community. The first concert, to be held Friday, June 19th and Saturday, June 20th, will be highlighted by stars Brantley Gilbert and the Eli Young Band on Saturday, June 20th. For us Bear fans, former Bear Zach Miller will also be debuting his musical talent. For more information about attending this event, or supporting the R.I.S.E. Up Foundation, visit www.riseupfoundationmchenry.org. July and August are highlighted by the always rockin’ McHenry Fiesta Days music weekend July 9th -12th and the McHenry Rotary Blues, Brews, and BBQ, presented by D.C. Cobbs, August 14th – 16th. Visit www.mchenryfiestadays.com and www.mrbbb.com for more information on these events. One important event change that I wanted to mention is that the annual Independence Day Fireworks celebration will be taking place the evening of Sunday, July 12th, to close out Fiesta Days Music weekend. This change was made in an effort to tie into the family oriented activities that take place on the Sunday of Fiesta Days Music weekend, as well as to get a bigger “bang” for our buck with those companies that put on the firework shows. There are so many great activities going on in McHenry this summer that my calendar is already FULL. I look forward to seeing you around town! Yours, Wayne Jett

STORM DAMAGE PICK-UP CRITERIA The City may provide a storm damage pick-up following a major storm event that has impacted large areas of the community. This service is intended to CRITERIA assist in the clean-up of severe damage and not the result of tree trimming or thunderstorms. The City uses the Weather Command weather service to help • Sustained wind determine if weather events meet the criteria and are severe enough to warrant a speeds of 40mph storm damage pick-up. or greater If the need for a storm damage pick-up has been determined by the City, notification of the storm damage pick-up will be posted on the City’s website and • Wind gust speeds Facebook page. Residents should place branches on the parkway parallel to the street but not in the street, making sure that the branches are as long as possible of 58mph or and no more than 5 inches in diameter. No stumps or roots will be taken. greater For any additional brush removal, residents who do not have a landscape service should follow the Prairieland Disposal guidelines for the 2020 Yard Waste Programs. ONLY YOU CAN PREVENT POLLUTION As stormwater flows over driveways, lawns, and sidewalks, it picks up debris, chemicals, dirt and other pollutants. Stormwater can flow into a storm sewer system or directly to a lake, stream, river, wetland, or coastal water. Anything that enters a storm sewer system is discharged untreated into the waterways we use for swimming, fishing, and providing drinking water. Polluted runoff is the nation’s greatest threat to clean water. By practicing healthy household habits, homeowners can keep common pollutants like pesticides, fertilizers, pet waste, grass clippings, and automotive fluids off the ground and out of stormwater. Adopt these healthy household habits and help protect lakes, streams, rivers, wetlands. As we all know summer rains can be anything from a gentle rain to a downpour. That is why it is very important to follow the directions on the fertilizer you are using. Putting down fertilizer at the wrong time or over spreading it on sidewalks and driveways is a waste of money and more importantly, bad for the environment. Spreading fertilizer right before a heavy rain can wash it all away, leaving your lawn with no food. The other more important thing that happens is the fertilizer gets washed away and taken to places it should never be. When fertilizer ends up in creeks and rivers it causes damage to the natural habitat of everything that lives there.

A FEW SIMPLE STEPS TO PREVENT THIS POLLUTION ARE: 1. Follow manufacturer’s directions 2. Do not fertilize right before a heavy rain 3. Do not overspread fertilizer. If you accidently do get it on driveways or sidewalks clean it up before it can get washed away and cause damage to the environment. 13 Public Works

FOX RIVER CORRIDOR PLAN With support from a grant through CMAP’s Local Technical Assistance (LTA) program, McHenry County Department of Planning and Development and the City of McHenry Department of Economic Development are leading a two-year collaborative effort to develop a comprehensive Corridor Plan for the Fox River and adjoining river communities from Burtons Bridge to the Dutch Creek inlet at Johnsburg . The project builds on the foundation of two previous Fox River Corridor plans – one for the Villages of Algonquin and Carpentersville (completed in December 2015) and another for McHenry and Lake Counties (completed in September 2018). However, this project is ultimately a blank slate upon which priorities can emerge through the planning process. Some of the focus areas include ways to improve multijurisdictional planning efforts, recreation, commerce, examining perceived and actual barriers to enjoyment of the river and more. The other Fox River Plans can be viewed at www.cmap.illinois.gov/programs/lta/fox-river.
