2021 MAY 24 CountryInsider.com | Sign Up For Daily Email Here What Will Be Country Music’s Songs Of Summer 2021? If 2020 was the summer where everyone stayed home, 2021 will be the one where people can’t wait to get back out. With Memorial Day Weekend approaching, what are country radio’s programmers seeing as the singles for this season? “I think three are shaping up to be summer soundtracks with Luke Bryan’s ‘Waves’ front and center,” says Audacy Country Format Captain Tim Roberts. “It’s a super-chill track that captures summer and fun beautifully.” Also on Roberts’ summer fun list: Brian Kelley’s “Beach Cowboy,” “which I think is where a lot of brains drift toward daydreaming about summer beach fun,” and Old Dominion’s new “I Was on a Boat That Day.” (Continued on page 4) COUNTRY INSIDER TOP 5: WGAR’s “Wazz & Carletta” Look Back On Morning Show Pairing Ahead Of First Anniversary. Keith Hill on Keith Hill
June 1, 2015, Issue 450 Addressing SaladGate Six pages of in-depth reporting on Women In Country and a post-CRS panel write-up in which Keith Hill urged slashing female- voiced songs made nary a ripple outside the business a few months back. But the consultant’s lettuce-and-tomatoes analogy last week in this space touched off a social and, eventually, major media tidal wave. Go figure. We’ll get to Hill in the next story (right), after female PDs and MDs weigh in with their thoughts on a well-known though still confounding reality. In full disclosure, some of the women we contacted declined to contribute for lack of time or lack of what they felt would be helpful feedback. Some passed because they weren’t comfortable publicly commenting in a “no-win argument.” And some came to us asking to be part of the conversation. Issue 510 Bud & Broadway on the Move Taking a Morning Show on a Remarkable Journey from Market No
August 1 2016, Issue 510 Bud & Broadway On The Move Taking a morning show on a remarkable journey from market No. 188 to No. 22 was all part of the five- (and-a-half) year plan for WIL/St. Louis’ Bud & Broadway. Of course, their decades of programming and on-air experience helped. Country Aircheck reached out for a travelogue. In 2010, WTVY/Dothan, AL PD Jerry Broadway brought in Bud Ford for afternoons. “After he and I met and started hanging out, we figured out pretty quick that we should be doing a morning show together,” says Broadway. “I was already on the morning show, and an opportunity came up to add a partner, and I decided Bud was going to be that guy.” Don’t Be Your Own Boss: The two tapped prodigious programming experience – Ford’s includes WKDF/Nashville – and aimed to create a show either would hire. Easier said than done, Flatts Forward: Big Machine’s Rascal Flatts in Dallas Saturday it turns out. “It challenges us,” says Ford. “There are two sides. (7/30). A Multi-Level Analysis of Songwriter Career Strategies by Rachel S
Changing Patterns of Cooperation in Occupational Communities: A Multi-Level Analysis of Songwriter Career Strategies By Rachel Skaggs Dissertation Submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Vanderbilt University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in Sociology August 10, 2018 Nashville, Tennessee Approved: Daniel B. Cornfield, PhD Shaul Kelner, PhD Joshua Murray, PhD Copyright © 2018 by Rachel Skaggs All Rights Reserved ii To my father, Donnie Skaggs, who I’ve watched pursue his songwriting dreams. To my mother, Rose Skaggs, who supports his dreams and mine. To David Carlson. His dreams and mine are intertwined. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS It is an overwhelming task to think of all of the support that people have given me in support of this dissertation. My dissertation is about collaboration, and I have been unmeasurably lucky to have collaborated with wonderful people. I want to begin by thanking every songwriter I interviewed. Without their trust and insight, I could not have conducted research that is as compelling, touching, and important as the project that has emerged. The generosity and openness of these people, most of whom were total strangers to me, is inspiring. Next, I must acknowledge the support of the Robert Penn Warren Center for the Humanities. As a dissertation fellow at the Warren Center, I was able to truly develop my ideas and focus on the work of writing a good dissertation. My fellow fellows at the Warren Center challenged me and supported me. Danielle Picard, Wietske Smeele, Sara Kollner, Alexandra Alekseyeva, David Vila, and James Phelan all contributed to the ways I think about my own work as I try to present it in a manner that is intelligible and meaningful to an interdisciplinary audience. -
American Songwriter
JASON BOLAND Written by Evan Schlansky - May 19th Jason Boland & The Stragglers are a Southern country rock institution with a rabid fan base. We quizzed the Oklahoma native about his rugged new, Shooter Jennings-produced album Dark and Dirty Mile, his songwriting heroes and more. Who are your songwriting heroes? Bob Childers, Mike McClure, Tom Skinner, Randy Crouch, Todd Snider, Billy Joe Shaver, Van Morrison, Townes Van Zandt, Merle Haggard, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, and Johnny Cash. Tell us a bit about your new album. The new album is titled Dark and Dirty Mile. It is nine new songs and a couple of covers from our mentors. We recorded it down at Cedar Creek Studios in Austin with the help of our buddy, Shooter Jennings. How would you compare it to 2011′s Rancho Alto? Every album you hope to inch closer to what you hear in your head. Dark and Dirty Mile has a tone less flattered by modern technology, and catches a funny little glimpse of who we are as players. What’s your opinion on the way modern country songs are written, where co- writers crank out a song a day in the hopes of getting a good one? Every industry has its factory jobs that turn out quantity, but if the consumer left it on the shelf they would cease to exist. Has modern country music gotten any better in the past five years? Not at all. When did you start writing songs? Were they good right away, or did that come later? I started writing songs in high school, I remember feeling good about the songs at the time, so they must of down their job. -

JAIME WYATT SIGNS to NEW WEST RECORDS to RELEASE NEON CROSS, PRODUCED by SHOOTER JENNINGS, MAY 29Th, 2020
JAIME WYATT SIGNS TO NEW WEST RECORDS TO RELEASE NEON CROSS, PRODUCED BY SHOOTER JENNINGS, MAY 29th, 2020 “Neon Cross refines Wyatt’s honky-tonk sound into something more lush, layered, and complex.” Rolling Stone Jaime Wyatt will release Neon Cross on May 29th, 2020. The 11-song set was produced by the two-time Grammy Award winning producer Shooter Jennings (Brandi Carlile, Tanya Tucker) and is her New West Records debut. The album features Jennings on the song “Hurt So Bad” and the legendary Jessi Colter on Wyatt’s trad-country feminist anthem “Just A Woman.” It also features Neal Casal on guitar, harmonica, and wurlitzer in one of his final recordings before his death in August of 2019. Neon Cross is the anticipated follow up to Wyatt’s 2017 Felony Blues EP, which was named one of the best albums of the year by Rolling Stone Country, Vice/Noisey, Wide Open Country and more. Wyatt and Shooter Jennings boldly color outside the country lines on Neon Cross, taking a wide-lens sonic and stylistic approach to the songs. Though that sonic backdrop is all in service to Wyatt’s incisive lyrics and expressive vocals, which can be achingly sensitive and sincere one minute, and unflinchingly cocksure and dispassionate the next. On Jennings as a producer, Wyatt said, “What really sold me on Shooter is that he understands grooves — he gets how to instruct a band to build a groove that is so powerful underneath a song. And it’s crazy because that’s what Waylon [Jennings, Shooter’s father] did.
