MR Taylor Swift Announces Second Re-Recorded Album Will Be ‘Red (Taylor’s Version)’ Taylor Swift announced that the next phase of her re-release project will be Red (Taylor’s Version). The newest album will be available everywhere on Nov. 19. “In the land of heartbreak, moments of strength, independence, and devil-may-care rebellion are intricately woven together with grief, paralyzing vulnerability and hopelessness. Imagining your future might always take you on a detour back to the past. And this is all to say, that the next album I’ll be releasing is my version of Red,” she announced via social media. Red, Swift’s Grammy-nominated and award-winning album, was originally released in 2012 and included a plethora of hit singles for the artist, including “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” “I Knew You Were Trouble,” “22,” “Everything Has Changed” with Ed Sheeran, the album’s title track “Red,” and fan-favorite “All Too Well.” After its release in October of 2012, the project spent seven weeks at the top of the Billboard 200, making Swift the first female artist—and the second act since the Beatles—to have three consecutive albums each spend at least six weeks at No. 1. Red, Swift’s fourth studio album, was also certified 7x Platinum. With such an impressive list of accolades associated with the original album, Swift will be taking on quite a feat as she reimagines the effort. This will be the second re-release Swift will deliver, after having released Fearless (Taylor’s Version) in April. Fearless (Taylor’s Version) featured re-recorded versions of all 19 tracks from the 2008 edition of Fearless, in addition to Swift’s 2010 single “Today Was a Fairytale,” and six additional songs not included on the original album. The re-recorded version of Fearless reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, and became the first re-recorded album to ever do so. “Like trying on pieces of a new life, I went into the studio and experimented with different sounds and collaborators,” Swift writes of Red (Taylor’s Version). “And I’m not sure if it was pouring my thoughts into this album, hearing thousands of your voices sing the lyrics back to me in passionate solidarity, or if it was simply time, but something was healed along the way.” Swift also told fans that Red (Taylor’s Version) will include 30 tracks, all of which were meant to go on the original project. MR Page 3 of 19 June 25, 2021 The MusicRow Weekly Carly Pearce Invited To Join The Grand Ole Opry Carly Pearce has been invited to be the latest Grand Ole Opry Member by the iconic Opry Member Dolly Parton. The invite happened off the Opry stage late last week, and the public announcement was held until Pearce’s Opry appearance on June 22 so she could experience the moment on the hallowed stage. It was a full circle moment for the CMA and double ACM Award winner, who cut her teeth as a performer at Dollywood when she was a teenager. When the invitation was extended as seen in the video, Pearce though she was taping a promotion for the theme park. This is the first time Parton has asked someone to become a member of country’s longest running institution. After the invitation video played for the packed Opry House, the crowd stood in applause as Carly expressed, “Truly this is the most precious place and the most precious family I could ever be a part of. I’ve experienced so many wonderful things in my career so far, but this takes the cake!” “When one of ours has a special moment, it’s an honor to be part of that,” Parton said. “Carly is a real songwriter and bright heart – and I loved getting to ask her to do something so very special.” For Pearce, who has played the Grand Ole Opry 85 times, it was a moment she will never forget. “[The Opry has] been the greatest love of my life since I was a young girl listening with my grandparents. All of the greatest writers, legends and pioneers have been on that stage, and I feel them in my bones anytime I walk in the stage door… To actually be asked to join the Opry family, there are no words,” Pearce said. “Carly Pearce and the Opry have enjoyed a most special relationship since even before she made her Opry debut,” said Opry Executive Producer Dan Rogers. “We’ve loved every minute of watching her star grow over the past few years and are thankful she reveres the Opry after more than 80 appearances even more than she did on her first night with us. Every night she plays the Opry, I try to make my way back to her to thank her for taking the time to visit us. Every single time she replies, ‘It’s my favorite place to be.’ Here’s to the Opry being Carly’s favorite place to be for the rest of what will no doubt be a long, successful career.” Pearce will be officially inducted on Tuesday, Aug. 3. • Narrative Representations of Gender and Genre Through Lyric, Music, Image, and Staging in Carrie Underwood’S Blown Away Tour
COUNTRY CULTURE AND CROSSOVER: Narrative Representations of Gender and Genre Through Lyric, Music, Image, and Staging in Carrie Underwood’s Blown Away Tour Krisandra Ivings A Thesis Presented In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirement for the Degree Master of Arts in Music with Specialization in Women’s Studies University of Ottawa © Krisandra Ivings, Ottawa, Canada, 2016 Abstract This thesis examines the complex and multi-dimensional narratives presented in the work of mainstream female country artist Carrie Underwood, and how her blending of musical genres (pop, rock, and country) affects the narratives pertaining to gender and sexuality that are told through her musical texts. I interrogate the relationships between and among the domains of music, lyrics, images, and staging in Underwood’s live performances (Blown Away Tour: Live DVD) and related music videos in order to identify how these gendered narratives relate to genre, and more specifically, where these performances and videos adhere to, expand on, or break from country music tropes and traditions. Adopting an interlocking theoretical approach grounded in genre theory, gender theory, narrative theory in the context of popular music, and happiness theory, I examine how, as a female artist in the country music industry, Underwood uses genre-blending to construct complex gendered narratives in her musical texts. Ultimately, I find that in her Blown Away Tour: Live DVD, Underwood uses diverse narrative strategies, sometimes drawing on country tropes, to engage techniques and stylistic influences of several pop and rock styles, and in doing so explores the gender norms of those genres. ii Acknowledgements A great number of people have supported this thesis behind the scenes, whether financially, academically, or emotionally.

  • THE MUSICAL FEATURES of 2015'S TOP-RANKED COUNTRY SONGS
THE MUSICAL FEATURES OF 2015’s TOP-RANKED COUNTRY SONGS By Mason Taylor Allen Senior Honors Thesis Department of Music University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill April 22, 2016 Approved: Dr. Jocelyn R. Neal, Thesis Advisor Dr. Allen Anderson, Reader Dr. Andrea Bohlman, Reader © 2016 Mason Taylor Allen ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Mason Taylor Allen: The Musical Features of 2015’s Top-Ranked Country Songs Under the direction of Dr. Jocelyn R. Neal The 2015 top-ten country songs analyzed in this study are characterized by the various formats of their song form, harmonies, and lyrics. This thesis presents a comprehensive study of the structure and narratives in sixty-seven songs that summarizes the distinctive features within those domains of contemporary commercial country music. A detailed description of the norm along with identifiable trends emerges. The song form that features most prominently in this repertory includes a verse-chorus-bridge form with three iterations of the chorus, an intro and outro section, and instrumental sections immediately following each chorus. The top-ten country songs have varying degrees of departure from this typical model. Primary features of the harmonies of these top songs include the frequent use of a double-tonic complex, the absence of a 5-1 authentic cadence, the same chord progression throughout the verse, chorus, and bridge, and the use of only two chords throughout the song. Lyrical analyses show that 2015 songs are continuing the traditional themes about romantic attraction, love, heartache, good times and partying, home, family, nostalgia, religion, and inspiration, within the context of small-town country life that this genre has used for years.

  • Multimillion-Selling Singer Crystal Gayle Has Performed Songs from a Wide Variety of Genres During Her Award-Studded Career, B
MultiMillion-selling singer Crystal Gayle has performed songs from a wide variety of genres during her award-studded career, but she has never devoted an album to classic country music. Until now. You Don’t Know Me is a collection that finds the acclaimed stylist exploring the songs of such country legends as George Jones, Patsy Cline, Buck Owens and Eddy Arnold. The album might come as a surprise to those who associate Crystal with an uptown sound that made her a star on both country and adult-contemporary pop charts. But she has known this repertoire of hardcore country standards all her life. “This wasn’t a stretch at all,” says Crystal. “These are songs I grew up singing. I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time. “The songs on this album aren’t songs I sing in my concerts until recently. But they are very much a part of my history.” Each of the selections was chosen because it played a role in her musical development. Two of them point to the importance that her family had in bringing her to fame. You Don’t Know Me contains the first recorded trio vocal performance by Crystal with her singing sisters Loretta Lynn and Peggy Sue. It is their version of Dolly Parton’s “Put It Off Until Tomorrow.” “You Never Were Mine” comes from the pen of her older brother, Jay Lee Webb (1937-1996). The two were always close. Jay Lee was the oldest brother still living with the family when their father passed away.
