Aslanian Since the publication of Lucien Febvre and Henri-Jean Martin’s L’aparition du livre in 1958 and more recently Elizabeth Eisenstein’s The Printing Press as an Agent of Change (1979), a substantial corpus of scholarship has emerged on print culture, and even a new discipline known as l’histoire du livre, or history of the book, has taken shape.1 As several scholars have al- ready remarked, the bulk of the literature on book history and the history of print has been overwhelmingly Eurocentric in conception. In her magnum opus, for instance, Eisenstein hardly pauses to consider whether some of her bold arguments on the “printing revolution” are at all relevant for the world outside Europe, except perhaps for Euroamerica. As one scholar has noted, “until recently, the available literature on the non-European cases has been very patchy.”2 The recent publication of Jonathan Bloom’s Paper Before Print (2001),3 Mary Elizabeth Berry’s Japan in Print (2007), Nile Green’s essays on Persian print and his Bombay Islam,4 several essays and works in press on printing in South Asia5 and Ming-Qing China,6 and the convening of an important “Workshop on Print in a Global Context: Japan and the World”7 indicate, however, that the scholarship on print and book history is now prepared to embrace the “global turn” in historical studies. -

The Torchbearer • }ahagir St. John Armenian Church of Greater Detroit 22001 Northwestern Highway • Southfield, MI 48075 248.569.3405 (phone) • 248.569.0716 (fax) • www.stjohnsarmenianchurch.org The Reverend Father Garabed Kochakian ~ Pastor The Reverend Father Diran Papazian ~ Pastor Emeritus Deacon Rubik Mailian ~ Director of Sacred Music and Pastoral Assistant In Memoriam: Archbishop Torkom Manoogian (1919-2012) With deep sorrow, the Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Church of America mourns the passing of His Beatitude Archbishop Torkom Manoogian, the 96th Armenian Patriarch of Jerusalem, and the long- serving former Primate of our own Diocese. Patriarch Torkom entered his eternal rest on October 12, 2012, at age 93. He was interred in Jerusalem, at the Patriarchal Cemetery, on Monday, October 22. In 2012, he suffered a serious decline in health. In January he was admitted to a hospital in Jerusalem, and subsequently was cared for in the city’s Franciscan hospice, close by to the Armenian Patriarchate, where he was visited by friends and relatives. It was there that he fell asleep in the Lord. Prior to his election as Patriarch of Jerusalem, Archbishop Torkom served for a quarter-century as Primate of the Eastern Diocese. To thousands of people across this country-not only in our parishes, but in the surrounding society-he was the vigorous, compassionate, always impressive face of the Armenian Church of America. He was also the beautiful, poetic voice of our people, advocating in a principled and forceful way for our concerns and aspirations, while embodying the great Armenian civilization that had bestowed works of profound art and spirituality on world culture. -

Riegg: Claiming the Caucasus: Russia’s Imperial Encounter with Armenians, 1801-1894 (Under the direction of Louise McReynolds) My dissertation questions the relationship between the Russian empire and the Armenian diaspora that populated Russia’s territorial fringes and navigated the tsarist state’s metropolitan centers. I argue that Russia harnessed the stateless and dispersed Armenian diaspora to build its empire in the Caucasus and beyond. Russia relied on the stature of the two most influential institutions of that diaspora, the merchantry and the clergy, to project diplomatic power from Constantinople to Copenhagen; to benefit economically from the transimperial trade networks of Armenian merchants in Russia, Persia, and Turkey; and to draw political advantage from the Armenian Church’s extensive authority within that nation. Moving away from traditional dichotomies of power and resistance, this dissertation examines how Russia relied on foreign-subject Armenian peasants and elites to colonize the South Caucasus, thereby rendering Armenians both agents and recipients of European imperialism. Religion represented a defining link in the Russo-Armenian encounter and therefore shapes the narrative of my project. Driven by a shared ecumenical identity as adherents of Orthodox Christianity, Armenians embraced Russian patronage in the early nineteenth century to escape social and political marginalization in the Persian and Ottoman empires. -

But as persecuted minorities in their Persian or Turkish-ruled homelands, and as emigrants bereft of the support of a strong colonial power, they inevitably developed techniques which enabled them to survive and sometimes to prosper in unpropitious circumstances. —Boxer (85, emphasis added) This article offers a non-fictional detective story that enables, and is embedded within, a larger analytical narrative. For reasons that will become clear, I as a historian and archival researcher play an unusually large role in the detective story, a tale of how I tracked down documents that enabled me to reconstruct an act of British colonial-era piracy against merchants of the Armenian trade diaspora in the eighteenth century. -

Dramatis Personae (Major Figures and Works) Sirāj al-Dīn ‘Alī Khān “Ārzū” (1689–1756 AD/1101–69 AH) Born to a lineage of learned men descended from Shaykh Chiragh Dihlavi and Shaykh Muhammad Ghaws Gwaliori Shattari, Arzu was raised and edu- cated in Gwalior and Agra. In 1719–20 AD/1132 AH, he moved to Delhi, where he was at the center of scholarly and literary circles. An illustrious scholar, teacher, and poet, he wrote literary treatises, commentaries, poetic collections (dīvāns), and the voluminous commemorative biographical compendium (tazkirih), Majma‘ al-Nafa’is (1750–51 AD/1164 AH) centered on Timurid Hin- dustan. He was teacher to many Persian and Urdu poets, and his position on proper idiomatic innovation was central to the development of north In- dian Urdu poetic culture. Arzu’s main patron was Muhammad Shah’s khān-i sāmān, Mu’tamin al-Dawlih Ishaq Khan Shushtari, and then his eldest son, Najam al-Dawlih Ishaq Khan. Through Ishaq Khan’s second son, Salar Jang, Arzu moved to Lucknow under Shuja‘ al-Dawlih’s patronage in 1754–55, as part of the migration of literati seeking patronage in the regional courts after Muhammad Shah’s death. Arzu died soon after in 1756, and his body was transported back to Delhi for burial. xvi Dramatis Personae Mīr Ghulām ‘Alī “Āzād” Bilgrāmī (1704–86 AD/1116–1200 AH) He was a noted poet, teacher, and scholar (of Persian and Arabic).
