Guangzhou‐Shenzhen‐Hongkong passenger dedicated line: Total length: 116km (48km in Shenzhen). Total investment: 29.4 billion. Shenzhen North Station and Futian Station commenced in 2011 and 2015 respectively. Xiamen‐Shenzhen railway: Total length: 357km (47km in Shenzhen). Total investment of Guangdong section: 37 billion. 247 21 Excavating the Future in Shenzhen Mary Ann O’Donnell In the People’s Republic of China (PRC), the future has not been a time, but rather an ongoing project to reclaim the country’s rightful place in the world. The official construction of China’s socialist future began when Mao Zedong announced the establishment of the PRC on October 1, 1949 and continued with the adoption of Deng Xiaoping’s Reform and Opening policy in December 1978.1 Mao and Deng agreed that China’s future lay in strengthening and modernizing society, but famously advocated different means for achieving that end. Through practices of “continuous revolution”, Mao aimed to develop the country while preventing the consolidation of a class of property owners. This strategy produced large-scale infrastructure projects that integrated the country and serial political movements which disrupted accumulation and allocation of resources. In contrast, Deng al- lowed “a few people to get rich first” in order to stimulate the economy, stabilizing property ownership and capital accumulation within the context of the Chinese state. Economic liberalization has made China the second largest economy in the world while creating vast inequalities in the distribu- tion of the country’s wealth. Since its establishment in 1980, the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone has played a critical role in the transition from Mao’s explicitly so- cialist to Deng’s not very socialist vision of China’s future. Indeed, in the 1980s, the Special Zone symbolized the possibility of post-Mao alternatives, while its emergence as China’s fourth city and world hub for hardware cre- atives has consolidated its role as a model of urban development elsewhere in China and the world.2 Shenzhen thus has had two relations to the future 248 VI. -

China’s economic transition from world factory to a knowledge-based economy underpinned the development of hundreds of CBDs over the course of less than two decades. The plans promoted land use diversity and the incorporation of service facilities in the support of business function, but a rather different service environment emerged. Taking the Futian CBD of Shenzhen as the prototypical case, we examined the distribution, vitality, uses, and users of these facilities, which are largely built up by the private sector and without governmental support. A questionnaire sent to users and data derived from social media reveal that the vast majority of visitors of these service facilities do not work in the CBD and travel via the reformed mass transport system to this location. The high-quality public spaces and street environment, as well as the numerous service facilities, many of which are at a low economic order, attract people from all over the vast city, which homes over ten million, highlighting a new role for the CBD as a civic center. -

My paper shall start considering the railway development at the turn of the 20th century, which radically changed the pre-existing territorial hierarchy in the regions concerned, implying the foundation of new cities, or a fast-paced development of existing ones. After the colonization period, the communist regime changed the location of original station, or build new station to integrate with new civic center, thus created an unified urban image and model for Chinese cities. At present China is facing her ‘golden age’ of high speed rail, the network and stations play again a critical role in shaping of the future cities. My paper shall conclude considering some analogies and distinctions between the present time and the 20th century’s Chinese railway station and urban transition. Keywords: Architecture, railway station, China, urban transition. 1. Introduction China is an outstanding example to interpret the relationship between railway station and urban transition. To discuss the changing urban language in Chinese cities in the past century and nowadays, railway station is a not to be missed protagonist. The early railway development which was built by foreign forces at the end of 19 century and the beginning of 20 century, radically changed the pre-existing territorial hierarchy in the regions concerned, implying the foundation of new cities, or a fast-paced development of existing ones. Some foreign countries set up railway companies to plan and establish the new city/district by using the same urban language, for instance, Russia in Harbin and Dalian, Japan in Shenyang, Changchun, Fushun, and Jiamusi.
