The blood of love The martyrs of Algeria (1994-1996) The Church of Algeria This booklet presents a group of nineteen martyrs of the Church of Algeria. All were passionate about their Church, of which they were zealous servants, and passionate also about Algeria and its people where they had weaved their friendships. Humble and gentle, the Lord radiated from their hearts, in their lives and in their silence. They witnessed to a settled, lucid faith, the faith of those preparing the space for dialogue in their prayer and in their presence. They are a very beautiful image of the Church of Algeria: small, a few thousand faithful people, dispersed in four dioceses: Alger, Oran, Constantine- Ippone et Laghouat. It is a living Church by its poverty as it has lost its social power and pomp. Daily, it lives love and service. Thus purified and without ambitions, it can be a bridgehead for dialogue with Islam. DECOLONIZING CHRISTIANITY: GRASSROOTS ECUMENISM IN FRANCE AND ALGERIA, 1940-1965 by DARCIE S. FONTAINE A Dissertation submitted to the Graduate School-New Brunswick Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Program in History written under the direction of Bonnie G. Smith and approved by ________________________ ________________________ ________________________ ________________________ New Brunswick, New Jersey MAY, 2011 2011 Darcie Fontaine ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Decolonizing Christianity: Grassroots Ecumenism in France and Algeria, 1940-1965 By DARCIE S. FONTAINE Dissertation Director: Bonnie G. Smith This dissertation, “Grassroots Ecumenism: Christianity and Decolonization in France and Algeria, 1940-1965” is the first major study of how French Protestant and Catholic engagement in the Algerian War of Independence (1954-1962) reshaped Christianity in the modern world and influenced global religious movements like Ecumenical Movement and Vatican II. The moral questions that surfaced during the Algerian War, including the French military’s use of torture, the repression of civilian populations, and debates about the legitimacy of the Algerian nationalist positions forced Christians across the world to rethink the role of Christianity in imperialism and its future in a postcolonial world. This dissertation examines the shifting dynamics of Christianity’s role in the French empire, from the role that Christianity played in supporting the moral foundations for French colonialism in Algeria, to the ways in which Social Christianity, which emerged in France in the 1930s and 40s, undermined these same moral arguments, including the belief that French colonialism was both benevolent and the only means through which Christian interests could be protected in Algeria.

  • 19 Martyrs to Be Beatified in Algeria by Soniva Sunny, October 31, 2018
19 Martyrs to be Beatified in Algeria by Soniva Sunny, October 31, 2018 Seven of the nineteen martyrs rose to international fame following the film Of Gods and Men. But on December 8th, all of the 19 men and women martyred by Islamic terrorists in Algeria between 1994 and 1996 will be beatified in Oran, Algeria. The cause for their beatification opened in 2007, thus titling Pierre Claverie and Companions as Servants of God. Earlier this year His Holiness Pope Francis confirmed their beatification. On December 8th the ceremony of beatification will take place in the cathedral of the Diocese of Oran, of which the martyred Pierre Claverie was bishop. Cardinal Angelo Becciu, Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, will preside the beatification Mass as well as represent the Holy Father on the occasion. In their press release of October 2018, the bishops of Algeria make it clear that the purpose of the beatification is not to make of these men and women heroes. Rather it is to show that through these ordinary men and women we see how even in the darkest of times there are glimpses of hope. And their unconditional love of God, their country and their people shows us how “only love can end the alienating spiral of evil”. Between 1991 and 2002, Algeria was thrust into a civil war between the Algerian government and Islamic rebel groups. During the years in which the brutality of the rebels reached new heights, 19 men and women had to pay the ultimate price for their Christian faith and unwillingness to leave their land.

The course explores social, historical, artistic and religious themes present within contemporary Sicilian society. It focuses on the complexities of life and culture in Sicily, through changing populations and identities, and on organizing modern life around an ever-present past. Through lectures, class-discussions, fieldtrips and research, students study Sicily’s culture and their reactions to it. Through interaction with the local community and discussion about the students’ experiences of that community, and the de-cyphering of the unwritten language of gesture and social behavior, the course aims to break down stereotypes and enhance inter-cultural awareness.
