UPCOMING EVENTS MARY MAJOR – This Thursday (August 5) we will celebrate the memorial of the Dedication of the Basilica PARISH PICNIC – Mark your calendars and plan to of St. Mary Major in Rome. After nearly four centuries of attend our Parish Picnic on the Rectory Lawn on Sunday living the faith, the successors of the Apostles, led by the September 26. More details to follow… Holy Spirit, reached the point from which they could see that Mary was not just the mother of Jesus but that Mary is also the Mother of God! Shortly after this declaration in 381 A.D. by the Council of Ephesus, this building became the first major church in the West erected in honor of Mary. SO WHAT? – Are we Catholics plagued with “edifice complexes” or is there something of value here? The day after he was elected to succeed St. Peter, Pope Francis went to St. Mary Major to pray. Before and after each of his overseas apostolic journeys, our current Pope stops into this building to pray. Who is this woman who St. Ann has a parish-wide license with Bishop Robert informs his choices and to whom he brings his questions? Barron’s Word on Fire! That means you have access to the Word on Fire Digital Library. This is a premium “MARY, MARY QUITE CONTRARY” – goes the nursery rhyme about a past queen of England. Later, in the Temple after Simeon had acknowledged her son as the Messiah and predicted Jesus’ rejection and Mary’s suffering, we read, “his Pope’s Universal Intention for August mother kept all these things in her heart” (Luke 2:51).
