SAINT PATRICK: ISSUES OF TRANSLATION & HIS ENDURING PASTORAL MESSAGE A dissertation submitted to the Caspersen School of Graduate Studies Drew University in partial fulfillment of The requirements for the degree, Doctor of Letters Christina Isabella McGrath Drew University Madison, New Jersey May 2021 Copyright © 2021 by Christina Isabella McGrath All Rights Reserved Abstract Saint Patrick: Issues of Translation and His Enduring Pastoral Message Doctor of Letters Dissertation by Christina Isabella McGrath The Caspersen School of Graduate Studies Drew University May 2021 This dissertation attempts to discover the reason(s) for the worldwide interest in Saint Patrick of Ireland by focusing on the numerous translations of his two writings, the Confessio (The Confession of Saint Patrick) and the Epistola (The Letter to the Soldiers of Coroticus). By analyzing seven specific twentieth century translations of the saint’s fifth century writings, the reader will discern subtle differences in each end product, leading to a unique message from Patrick. Working with the assertions that every translation is a political act of some kind and that the translator becomes part of the translation, specific passages from the saint’s writings are examined and discussed through the lens of translation theory along with survey responses from accessible translators. After delving into Patrician scholarship, the historical sources presenting Saint Patrick’s letters have been called into question, due to the personal agendas and biases of his seventh century biographers. Over the past 1500 years, both political and religious factions have usurped him for their own agendas. The end result of this exploration led to the discovery of a man who went to the end of his world to preach the Gospel, to convert the Irish to Christianity, and to share the love of his God with the place and people who once enslaved him. -

As I demonstrate, the methodologies available to early modern historians, many of which were developed by medieval chroniclers, were extraordinary flexible, able to meet a large number of scholarly and political needs. I argue that many early modern historians worked with medieval texts and genres not because they had yet to learn more sophisticated models for representing the past, but rather because one of the most effective ways that these writers dealt with the political and religious exigencies of their times was by adapting the practices, genres, and materials of medieval history. I demonstrate that the early modern national history was capable of supporting multiple genres and reading modes; in fact, many of these histories reflect their authors’ conviction that authentic past narratives required genres with varying levels of facticity. -

Bilingualism in the Cambrai Homily Gwendolyne Knight* The Cambrai Homily (Cambrai, Bibliothèque municipale, MS 679 [s. viii2] ff. 37rb–38rb) is a short prose homily found between two chapters of the Collectio canonum Hibernensis; as the Homily is incomplete, it has been suggested that it was copied from a stray leaf inserted into the exemplar of the Collectio. The Homily itself is estimated to date to the seventh or first half of the eighth century. More salient for the purpose of this anthology, however, is the fact that the Homily code-switches between Latin and Old Irish. Some claim that this text provides us with the earliest record of continuous Irish prose; as such it has long been an important source for early Irish linguistics, as well as evidence for sermons in the seventh-century Irish Church. Nevertheless, the aspects of code-switching between Old Irish and Latin in the Cambrai Homily remain underexplored. This article provides an assessment of existing perspectives on the relationship between Latin and Old Irish in this homily, and offers a fresh interpretation of the code-switching that takes place. Keywords: Medieval homily, code-switching, translation studies, Old Irish, Latin, Cambrai Introduction The manuscript preserved in Cambrai, Bibliothèque municipale, MS 679 (formerly 619) is a partial transmission of the Collectio canonum Hibernensis, containing 38 of 65-69 books of scriptural and patristic extracts, as well as canon law, and Irish synodal and penitential de- crees. It was copied for Alberic, bishop of Cambrai and Arras (763-790), in the second half of the 8th century. -

A History of the O’Shea Clan (July 2012) At the beginning of the second millennium in the High Kingship of Brian Boru, there were three distinct races or petty kingdoms in what is now the County of Kerry. In the north along the Shannon estuary lived the most ancient of these known as the Ciarraige, reputed to be descendants of the Picts, who may have preceded the first Celts to settle in Ireland. On either side of Dingle Bay and inland eastwards lived the Corcu Duibne1 descended from possibly the first wave of Celtic immigration called the Fir Bolg and also referred to as Iverni or Erainn. Legend has it that these Fir Bolg, as we will see possibly the ancestors of the O’Shea clan, landed in Cork. Reputedly small, dark and boorish they settled in Cork and Kerry and were the authors of the great Red Branch group of sagas and the builders of great stone fortresses around the seacoasts of Kerry. Finally around Killarney and south of it lived the Eoganacht Locha Lein, descendants of a later Celtic visitation called Goidels or Gaels. Present Kerry boundary (3) (2) (1) The territories of the people of the Corcu Duibne with subsequent sept strongholds; (1) O’Sheas (2) O’Falveys (3) O’Connells The Eoganacht Locha Lein were associated with the powerful Eoganacht race, originally based around Cashel in Tipperary. By both military prowess and political skill they had become dominant for a long period in the South of Ireland, exacting tributes from lesser kingdoms such as the Corcu Duibne. -

EAMON KANE In the third week of August 908 AD, the Battle of Ballaghmoon was fought between High King, Flann Sinna, Máele Sechnaill (879–916 AD); the King of Leinster, Cerball mac Múirecáin, Uí Dúnlainge, Ui Faeláin and Cathal, son of Conchobhar, king of Connaught. Opposing these were Bishop Cormac mac Cuilennáin, Eóganacht Chaisil, King of Munster (902-908 AD); Flaithbertact, son of Inmainén, abbot of Inis Cathaig and Cellach mac Cerbail, King of Osraige (905-908 AD). Ballaghmoon is a townland in the barony of Kilkea and Moone situated in south Kildare. All that remains of an important post reformation church and rec- tory are ruins standing in a walled graveyard containing ancient and extant graves. International Journal of Orthodox Theology 6:2 (2015) 99 urn:nbn:de:0276-2015-2068 Dylan Pahman The Sweat of Christians is the Seed of Martyrdom: A Paradigm for Modern Orthodox Christian Witness Abstract This paper examines the connection between asceticism and martyrdom from a practical, historical, and theoretical point of view. It is argued that from the very beginning, Christians practiced asceticism, and that this practice was an essential preparation for martyrdom. Martyrdom, in turn, served as an inspiration for asceticism. Thus, while red martyrdom can be seen as the culmination of Christian asceticism, Dylan Pahman is a all Christian asceticism ought to be research fellow at the Acton Institute for the seen as martyric, witnessing to the Study of Religion & Liberty kingdom of God and the cross of where he serves as Christ. Introduction Medieval Ireland is known for a great number of kings - in fact there were probably no less than 150 kings in the country at any given date between the fifth and twelfth century1 . Since the total population was probably well under half a million, this multiplicity of royalty is all the more remarkable. Of course, all of them were of different types. There were in general: rí tuaithe – the king of single tuath or tribe, rí tuath or rui ri (great king) was the king of several tribes, but commonly he was called according to the name of territory or the name of ruling dynasty branch (for example, rí Iarluachra, which means the king of the territories to the west of Luachra mountains); rí coicid (king of fifth, i.e. of one of the provinces into which Ireland was traditionally divided) or ard-ri of province (ard-ri Ulad, ard-ri Connacht, ard-ri Laigen), and, at once, ard-ri or ríg Érenn – high-king of Ireland2. In spite of the concept of the high-kingship in Ireland, there is no evidence about centralized monarchy before the king Brian Boru from the Munster’s dynasty Dál Cais. Irish provinces and their kings were independent from each other and were mostly connected with the dynastic relations. From the beginning of early Middle Age till the Norman invasion there were two powerful ruling dynasties in Ireland: Uí Néill in the central and north part and Eóganachta dynasty (after them Dál Cais), in the south, in Munster. -

This dissertation contains a critical edition of the early Irish tale Aided Derbforgaill “The violent death of Derbforgaill”. It includes an introduction discussing the main thematic components of the tale as well as intertextuality, transmission and manuscript relationship. The edition is accompanied by transcripts from the three manuscript copies of the tale and textual notes. Aided Derbforgaill is an Ulster Cycle tale and belongs to a category of tales describing the death of prominent heroes, rarely heroines, in early Irish literature. Arriving in the shape of a bird to mate with the greatest of all heroes, Cú Chulainn, Derbforgaill is refused by Cú Chulainn on account of him having sucked her blood. Forced to enter a urination competition between women, and upon winning this, Derbforgaill is mutilated by the other competitors. The tale ends with two poems lamenting the death of Derbforgaill. This very short tale is complex, not only in its subject matter, but in the elliptical language of the poetry. Thematically the tale is a combination of very common motifs found elsewhere in early Irish literature, such as the Otherworld, metamorphosis and the love of someone unseen, and some rare motifs that are almost unique to this tale, such as blood sucking and the urination competition. -

He was arguably the most successful Irish king of the Middle Ages, and his sobriquet “bórumha” (“cattle tribute”), usually Anglicized as “Boru,” refers to his right to the reign over the island. Special emphasis is placed on the development of his military strategy as he progressed from regional prince to lordship over the entire island. Brian’s career has not received the scholarly attention given to his contemporaries elsewhere. His reign is either dealt with superficially in brief essays or treated more fully by writers interested in sensationalism. A careful study of Brian’s strategy and operational method reveals that they continuously evolved during the course of his reign.
