Dealership Staff Can Help Reduce the Number of Problems Owners Experience with Their New Vehicle Dealership Staff Can Help Reduce The Number of Problems Owners Experience With Their New Vehicle Honda Receives Two Model-Level Awards For Initial Quality, Perodua and Toyota Each Get One KUALA LUMPUR: 27 November 2015 — The salesperson plays a critical role in reducing the number of problems owners experience with their new vehicle, according to the J.D. Power Asia Pacific 2015 Malaysia Initial Quality StudySM (IQS) released today. Automakers continue to add features, specifically entertainment and connectivity technology, to their vehicle. By explaining at the time of delivery all of the features of the vehicle and how they work, the salesperson can make sure the owner is comfortable with the technology thus significantly reducing the number of problems the owner experienced with their vehicle. The study finds that when the salesperson provides a comprehensive explanation of the vehicle and its features, owners report an average of 79 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100). In contrast, owners who indicate their salesperson provided no explanation, or only a partial explanation, report an average of 163 PP100. “With all of the new content automakers are putting in their vehicles, it is absolutely critical for salespeople to provide comprehensive explanation of vehicle, including a test drive, to make sure the customer fully understands how to operate all of the technology and its benefits,” said Rajaswaran Tharmalingam, country head, Malaysia, J.D. Power. “The technology may work exactly as it’s designed, but if the customer doesn’t know how to use it or had difficulties using it, they deem it a problem. The salesperson can greatly reduce those problems simply spending time with the customer during the delivery process going through the vehicle and its accessories.” Tharmalingam noted that given the importance of the test drive, only 59 percent of customers in Malaysia took one during their shopping process. Customers who took a test drive report 74 PP100, while those who did not report 97 PP100. “The test drive is critical to help the owner experience the vehicle, which helps manage their expectations during the ownership lifecycle,” said Tharmalingam. “Quality and reliability are among the top purchase decision factors when selecting a vehicle, and problems experienced in the first six months of ownership can have an effect years later when consumers replace their vehicle.” The study, now in its 13th year, measures problems experienced by new-vehicle owners during the first two to six months of ownership. The study examines more than 200 problem symptoms covering eight vehicle categories: vehicle exterior; driving experience; features/ controls/ displays; audio/ entertainment/ navigation; seats; HVAC; vehicle interior; and engine/ transmission. Lower PP100 scores indicate a lower rate of problem incidence and, therefore, higher initial quality. (Page 1 of 2) KEY FINDINGS SUV owners report the fewest number of problems with their vehicle (52 PP100), while compact owners report the highest number of problems (98 PP100). Among the problem categories, owners report the most problems with the driving experience (17.8 PP100), up by 3.9 PP100 from 2014. Seats have the fewest problems among the problem categories at 5.0 PP100. Excessive wind noise remains as the top most frequently cited problem at 6.2 PP100. The second most frequently reported problem is noisy brakes (3.3 PP100) followed by floor mats that won’t stay in place (2.6 PP100). 2015 Malaysia IQS Study Rankings Among the 41 models examined in the study, two Honda models, one Perodua and one Toyota model rank highest in their respective segments. The Honda City ranks highest in the entry midsize segment (68 PP100) and the Honda CR-V ranks highest in the SUV segment (31 PP100). The Perodua Axia ranks highest in the compact segment (89 PP100), while the Toyota Avanza ranks highest in the MPV/ Van segment (36 PP100) for the sixth consecutive year. The 2015 Malaysia Initial Quality Study (IQS) is based on responses from 2,622 new-vehicle owners who purchased their vehicle between August 2014 and June 2015. The study includes 41 passenger car, pickup and utility vehicle models of 15 brands. The study was fielded between February and August 2015. • Global Trends and Malaysia's Automotive Sector
2021-3 Global Trends and Malaysia’s Automotive Sector: Ambitions vs. Reality Tham Siew Yean ISEAS - Yusof Ishak Institute Email: [email protected] March 2021 Abstract The paper seeks to examine the development of the Malaysian automotive sector in the midst of rapid global changes in technology, consumer preferences and sustainability concerns. The sector represents a case of infant industry protection which includes, among its objectives, the state’s aspiration to nurture Bumiputera entrepreneurs as national champions for the sector. Despite close to three decades of protection, the two national car projects continue to depend on foreign partners for technology support. The National Automotive Policies (NAPs) strive to push the sector towards the technology frontier with foreign and domestic investments while seeking to be a regional hub and grooming national Bumiputera champions. The inherent conflicts in these objectives create disincentives for investments while the domestic market is held captive to the national car producers. Although policies continue to espouse grand visions, the reality is that Malaysia’s car makers continue to be inward-looking and exporting remains insignificant. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- JEL Classification: O14, O25 Keywords: Automotive Sector, Industrial Policy Global Trends and Malaysia’s Automotive Sector: Ambitions vs. Reality Tham Siew Yean 1. Introduction The use of state intervention for development has been espoused in theory and practice in many countries. The World Bank (1993) study on the East Asian miracle economies is often attributed to illustrate the success of state intervention in industrial policy. However, the study itself cautions that the use of industrial policy needs to be supported with good fundamental policies, evaluation and monitoring of the support given.

  • Asean NCAP's Success and Challenges in Promoting Safer
Transport and Communications Bulletin for Asia and the Pacific No. 89, 2019 ASEAN NCAP’S SUCCESS AND CHALLENGES IN PROMOTING SAFER VEHICLES IN THE ESCAP REGION Khairil Anwar Abu Kassim, Ahmad, Jawi and Ishak Abstract Starting from 2011, ASEAN NCAP has been mandated to carry out crash tests on new cars in the ESCAP region, particularly Southeast Asia. With a total population of over 630 million, the 10 countries comprising ASEAN have seen passenger vehicle sales reach over three million units. To date, 90 percent of the vehicles sold in ASEAN market have been tested by ASEAN NCAP. Their safety aspects have been greatly improved over time. But aside from the safety of car occupants, ASEAN NCAP is also concerned with the safety of vulnerable road users. In November 2018, ASEAN NCAP announced its latest road map which focuses on the safety of motorcyclists in the region. ASEAN NCAP’s efforts have also been recognized by the Malaysian government, as of next year, all car dealers are to showcase the star rating issued by ASEAN NCAP on the car’s front windshield and side mirror in all showroom and sales centres in Malaysia. This is to educate buyers to choose the models that give priority to the best rating. The current paper shall provide an overview of the results produced by ASEAN NCAP, including its success and challenges to elevate the safety standards of passenger vehicles in the Southeast Asian market. In addition, the last section will describe ASEAN NCAP road map which guides its journey toward achieving SDG targets 3.6 and 11.2.

  • Malaysia's Energy Efficient Vehicles (EEV) Concept (MAI, 2018)
© Journal of the Society of Automotive Engineers Malaysia www.journal.saemalaysia.org.my Global greenhouse emission from both urban development and uncontrolled pollution has resulted in today’s climate change. In addition, the increase in transport demands that utilize internal combustion engine has led to an escalating need for petroleum. This subsequently has resulted in the depletion of non-renewable resources. As one of the world’s oil producing nations, Malaysia also needs to find an alternative way to reserve energy while at the same time, reduce harmful emission from fuel combustion. To achieve such an objective, the National Automotive Policy (NAP) was conceived in 2014 after much debate and discussion on the environmental devastation and climate change affecting the nation (Zainul Abidin, 2018). One policy which stood as NAP’s main focus was to turn Malaysia into a regional hub of Energy Efficient Vehicles (EEV). What is EEV? People often wonder what EEV means aside from their benefits to the country’s economy and environment. Energy Efficient Vehicles (EEV) are vehicles that bring minimal harmful impacts to the environment in terms of carbon emission level (g/km) and fuel consumption (l/100km) compared to normal internal combustion engine vehicles. In order to control and reduce carbon emission, Malaysia has been involved in advanced technology transfer with more developed countries in addition to endorsing the Kyoto Protocol in 2002 to reduce 70 million tonnes of CO2 emission over a 20-year period. The country has also tried to apply the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) to cut down at least 5% of CO2 emission compared to the current level where such a mechanism is used in the form of carbon credits or Certified Emission Reduction (CERs).

  • Welfare Effects of Trade Barriers on Malaysian Car Industry: an Alternative Approach
WELFARE EFFECTS OF TRADE BARRIERS ON MALAYSIAN CAR INDUSTRY: AN ALTERNATIVE APPROACH Wai Kun C Lau (1718460) A Dissertation Submitted In Fulfilment Of The Requirements For The Degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY FACULTY OF BUSINESS & LAW SWINBURNE UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY April 2020 i Abstract Malaysian car industry has been heavily protected by tariff and non-tariff tools since it was founded in 1983. Despite excessive tariffs imposed on foreign cars, the demand for foreign cars increases after the Asian financial crisis 1997 while the demand for domestic cars declines. Partial equilibrium framework is applied in this research because the car industry’s contribution to GDP is very small and the focus of this research is specifically on the car industry. Since cars are durable and differentiated, changes due to technological advancement may influence car demand. This research applies Discrete Choice model to account for car characteristics in addition to socio-economic factors for analysis of car demand in Malaysia. Logistic regression analysis results show factors that influence car demand are: horsepower, fuel consumption, and car size that is measured by number of passengers. Results suggest that non-tariff barriers and government incentives given to the civil servants have significant influence on Proton cars’ demand, and foreign car makers that have been operating in Malaysia before the founding of Proton enjoy their reputation from their historical experience and performance. While it is often believed that European cars have ostentatious value in Malaysia, the results show otherwise. Price elasticity of demand for major car makes is estimated based on the average horsepower, car size and fuel consumption.
