Prof. Zuckmayer unterrichte Klavier und Chor, aber auch Harmonielehre und Musiktheorie. Musik ler- Film und Gespräch mit der Regisseurin nen hieß für ihn Musik machen. Und Musik sollte allen zugänglich sein. Bis heute genießt er bei türkischen Musikern einen geradezu legendären Ruf, Ein Film von Barbara Trottnow in Deutschland dagegen ist er in Vergessenheit geraten – auch in seiner Heimat Rheinhessen. -

From Empire to Republic: Western Art Music, Nationalism, and the Merging Mediation of Saygun’s Op.26 Yunus Emre Oratorio by Ozgecan Karadagli A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Music University of Alberta © Ozgecan Karadagli, 2017 Abstract This dissertation focuses on Western art music during the second half of the 19th century Ottoman Empire and the first half of 20th century in Republic of Turkey in the construction of a national identity, and how it had been used as a part of cultural politics. One of the aims is to contest some misinterpretations on the history and roles of Western art music. Through the Tanzimat (reform) period of the Ottoman Empire, Western art music genres became part of their Westernization policy. However, music was not a part of state ideology. On the other hand, as a big part of culture revolutions, music played an immense role of forging the new national identity of Turkish Republic. This music, under the vision of the founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, was formed through the synthesis of newly constructed Turkish folk music and Western art music techniques. Ahmet Adnan Saygun, as one the first generation of composers of the new state, dedicated himself to creating the new nationalist music of Turkey. This dissertation also argues that Saygun brought together Turkish folk music, Turkish art music and Western art music to compose nationalist music. In doing so, Saygun mediated the aesthetic and cultural traditions of the past and the present as well as broke the artificial art and folk music binary. -

HEINRICH WILHELM ERNST: COMPLETE WORKS, VOLUME SIX by Mark Rowe Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst was one of the most important violin virtuosi of the nineteenth century. Born to Jewish parents in Brno on 8 June 1812, he began to learn the violin at the age of nine, and his progress was soon so rapid that he transferred to the Vienna Conservatoire in 1825. Here he studied under Jakob Böhm (for violin) and Ignaz Seyfried (for composition), but it was Paganini’s Viennese concerts in 1828 which inspired the young virtuoso to set off on an ambitious solo tour of Germany in 1829–30 – sometimes entering into competition with Paganini himself – before heading for Paris in 1831. Remorseless practice ensured that by 1834 he was appearing in concerts with Liszt and Chopin, and his success became unequivocal when he triumphed over the now ailing Paganini in Marseilles in 1837. During the next eleven years, Ernst completed spectacularly successful tours of France, the Austrian Empire, Germany, Poland, the Low Countries, Britain, Scandinavia and Russia, before the 1848 Revolution put a temporary end to professional musical activity across the continent. He spent a good deal of the next eight years in Britain – one of the few major European countries unaffected by revolution – but he still undertook a handful of extended foreign tours, and on one of these excursions, to France in 1852, he met the actress Amélie-Siona Lévy. By the time they married, two years later, Ernst’s health – which had been delicate since his early twenties – was beginning to fail, and in 1858 he was forced to retire from the stage. -

D 13 E B The evolutıon of musıc educatıon ın Turkey A T E Dilek Göktürk Cary S Karabük University, Turkey 13 Abstract: Modern Turkey, now referred as the Republic of Turkey, which was founded on October 29, 1923, was constructed upon the heritage of the Ottoman Empire (1299-1923). The founder of the republic, often referred to as “the father of all Turks,” Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881-1938), adapted an agressive program of social and cultural change following the establishment of the government. He achieved these reforms by using European countries as models which was called “Westernization” or “Modernization.” During this period, new military technology and an educational system was adopted from France. Although the Westernization movement in the Ottoman Empire began during the late 1800s with the intention of catching up on European nations (which surpassed the Ottomans in the areas of technology and education), Atatürk developed the movement further in the early 1900s. He created an efficient modern state which merged liberal and secular thoughts and blended Islamic values with Western liberalism. Regarding Turkish music education, the first music teacher training school, Mûsıkî Muallim Mektebi (Music Teacher Training School), was opened in 1924 in Ankara, the capital city of the Republic of Turkey. In the present day, there are twenty-four music teacher training schools in Turkey and approximately 1,100 students are enrolled at these institutions. Keywords: Music teacher education in Turkey.
