We’ll have a gay ol’ time: transgressive sexuality and sexual taboo in adult television animation By Adam de Beer Thesis Presented for the Degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in Film Studies in the Faculty of Humanities and the Centre for Film and Media Studies UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN UniversityFebruary of 2014Cape Town Supervisor: Associate Professor Martin P. It has not been submitted before for any other degree or examination at any other university. Adam de Beer February 2014 ii Abstract This thesis develops an understanding of animation as transgression based on the work of Christopher Jenks. The research focuses on adult animation, specifically North American primetime television series, as manifestations of a social need to violate and thereby interrogate aspects of contemporary hetero-normative conformity in terms of identity and representation. A thematic analysis of four animated television series, namely Family Guy, Queer Duck, Drawn Together, and Rick & Steve, focuses on the texts themselves and various metatexts that surround these series. The analysis focuses specifically on expressions and manifestations of gay sexuality and sexual taboos and how these are articulated within the animated diegesis.

Burgunder- OPPORTUNISTIC TRADEMARKING OF SLOGANS- Galleyed-Finalized-5-21 (Do Not Delete)7/12/2013 4:45 PM OPPORTUNISTIC TRADEMARKING OF SLOGANS: IT’S NO CLOWN ISSUE, BRO LEE B. BURGUNDER* Abstract In June 2012, Bryce Harper, the Rookie of the Year ballplayer for the Washington Nationals, responded to a reporter’s inquiry with the statement, “That’s a clown question, bro.” The humorous retort was aired widely in the media, and gained such popularity that even Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid used it at a press conference. The day after Harper made the statement, he filed an intent-to-use trademark application for the slogan on t-shirts, hats and other types of products typically used by owners to express their personalities (herein called “billboard products”), and the United States Patent and Trademark Office (“PTO”) quickly gave its approval for registration. The incident raised questions about the propriety of using trademarks to gain exclusive rights to display clever or influential slogans, such as “Three- Peat” and “Let’s Roll,” on billboard products. This article explains why the PTO, under most circumstances, should not be so quick to register such phrases, but instead should wait until the applicant can demonstrate secondary meaning. • 2013 TV Staffing Brief
WGAW 2013 TV Staffing Brief The 2013 TV Staffing Brief examines employment patterns for 1722 writers1 working on 190 broadcast and cable television shows during the 2011-12 season.2 These shows were subject to Writers Guild of America, West (WGAW) bargaining agreements, and the data in this brief associated with each show were collected during the course of ongoing Guild business. This brief highlights three groups of writers who traditionally have been underemployed in the television industry — women, minority, and older writers. It documents the employment experiences of these groups of writers relative to their male, white, and younger counterparts in order to identify any trends that suggest either progress or retreat on the industry diversity front. The findings in the brief will be included later this year in the 2013 Hollywood Writers Report, the eighth report in a series that considers patterns in employment and earnings in both the television and film sectors. Using these reports as a diagnostic tool, the WGAW seeks to collaborate with the industry in efforts to increase the employment opportunities of all writers. Pockets of Promise, Minimal Progress It all begins with the writing. From concept to characters, from plot to narrative, writers play a foundational role in the fashioning of the stories a society circulates about itself. But in the Hollywood entertainment industry, unfortunately, there has all too often existed a disconnect between the writers hired to tell our stories and an America that’s becoming increasingly diverse with each passing day. Findings from the 2013 WGAW TV Staffing Brief show that — despite a few pockets of promise — much more work must be done on the television diversity front before the corps of writers telling our stories looks significantly more like us as a nation.
