I drew this motto from the ambiance of prayer, brotherhood and renewal that dominated the Electoral Holy Synod, and from the need of our Lebanese, Eastern and Expansion societies for greater unity and love, I was as well, 5 inspired by the Synod of Bishops’ Special Assembly for the Middle East, held in Rome from October 10th till 24th, 2010 under the title “Communion and Testimony”. I proclaimed my motto during the thanksgiving prayer, which followed the electoral session in the presence of a large number of clergy and lay faithful who fled to the Patriarchal See as the announcement was heard.

Key Definitions • IWRM may be defined as a process which promotes the coordinated development and management of water, land, and related resources to maximize the resultant economic and social welfare in an equitable manner without compromising the sustainability of vital ecosystems • It involves the integration of natural and anthropogenic systems – the former includes the integrated management of surface and groundwater resources Project Area Description • Case study is for the integrated management of surface and groundwater resources in the Nahr El Kalb area. • Surface water component: • Nahr El Kalb - catchment covers about 272 km2 • Average annual flow of around 254 million m3 • Groundwater component: • Jeita springs – catchment covers about 400 km2 • Average annual flow is estimated at about 210 million m3 • Catchment areas include a multitude of land uses Project Area Project Area Project Area Description • Catchment area – within Nahr El Kalb - includes a multitude of land uses and an equal number of threats • Significance of area: • Nearly 200,000 inhabitants • Major water source for Beirut • Major tourist attractions: • Ski resorts • Coastal resorts • Natural attractions - Jeita cavern, Faqra natural bridge, etc. • Archeological sites - Nahr el Kalb monuments, Kfardebian temples, etc. • Religious sites – Harissa, Bkirke, etc.

    Hit the Ski Slopes in the Heart of the Middle East March 1, 2016, Beirut, Lebanon Lebanon has long been known as a fantastic holiday destination, from the nightlife of Beirut to the ancient wonders of Baalbek and beyond. However, Lebanon is less well known as an international skiing destination. With a number of well established ski resorts, the country mixes Mediterranean style, wonderful hospitality, and pristine slopes just 30 to 60 minutes from Four Seasons Hotel Beirut on the sea. Lebanon's six resorts are all within a couple of hours drive from Beirut, making them immediately accessible and well worth a visit on the weekend. Skiing is popular with the locals and the ski season sees slopes replete with locals and tourists alike. Each resort has something to offer and it seems that every skier has a personal favourite. • Mzaar is Lebanon's most famous resort. Located by the villages of Faraya and Kfardebian, Mzaar offers more than 80 kilometres of slopes at up to 2465 metres. Mzaar is also home to the country's most challenging slopes, though there's plenty of snow for beginners and 1 intermediate skiers, too. Visitors should partake of some delicious street food at places such as Emm Bashir and Abou Artine. • Faqra Club was one of the first private ski clubs in the country, set up in 1974. Visitors can stay at the resort and enjoy stunning chalets, a heated pool, tennis courts and other amenities. With a variety of slopes, the resort caters to all levels and is well appointed in terms of infrastructure.
