Guatemala | Tours | Highlands, Copan, Tikal and Rio Dulce – 10 Days Guatemala | Tours | Highlands, Copan, Tikal and Rio Dulce – 10 Days Itinerary Day 1: Guatemala City Airport - Antigua Arrival at the Guatemala City airport and transfer to Antigua. Hotel Superior: Porta Antigua or similar; STD: Villa Colonial or similar (x 3 nights) Day 2: Antigua Guatemala Visit Antigua Guatemala, a colonial city declared by UNESCO “Cultural Heritage of Humankind”. We begin in Antigua’s Historic Centre, starting from the Main Plaza and visiting the main monuments of the city. Day 3: Antigua Day at Leisure Day at leisure to further explore the beautiful city of Antigua, or choose an optional tour (Pacaya Volcano; Surrounding Villages; Golf) Day 4: Chichicastenango Departure to Chichicastenango, where you will see the most colorful and picturesque outdoor market in Guatemala, where every Thursday and Sunday locals from the region, gather to buy and sell fruits, vegetables, flowers, grains, animals, textiles and handicrafts. Relevant is the visit to the Santo Tomás Church, where the Maya-Quiché pray to their gods according to the old Maya traditions. In the afternoon continue to Lake Atitlán. Hotel Superior: Porta del Lago or similar; STD: Villa Santa Catarina or similar Page 1 Day 5: Santiago Atitlán Departure in the morning by boat to the Maya-Tzutuhil village of Santiago Atitlán, famous for Maximón, a character that is widely worshiped by the inhabitants of Santiago. Santiago also offers a variety of handicrafts, colorful textiles, woodcarvings and naïf paintings. In the afternoon return to Panajachel and afterwards to Guatemala City Hotel Superior: Vista Real or similar ; STD: Barcelo Guatemala City or similar Day 6: (Honduras) PM Copán Tour Early in the morning we depart to Honduras. Arrival to Copán, one of the most impressive archaeological sites in the Maya World was declared “World Heritage Site” by UNESCO. This site presents a sophisticated architectural style and a unique art for stone carving. Visit the main plazas, complexes and monuments. Hotel Marina Copán or similar Day 7: (Guatemala) Quiriguá /Río Dulce/ Livingston Departure in the morning, on the way to Río Dulce we will visit Quiriguá, a unique archaeological site surrounded by the largest banana plantation in Central America. Declared by UNESCO “Cultural Heritage of Humankind”, Quiriguá is famous for having the tallest stone-carved stelae in the Maya World. After the visit, continue to Puerto Barrios, where you will take a boat ride to the Garífuna town of Livingston, located where Río Dulce meets the Caribbean Sea. Livingston is the only town in Guatemala where the African Caribbean Culture has survived with all its traditions since the first settlers came at the end of the 15th Century, and today it is a peaceful, colorful and relaxed town. Hotel Villa Caribe. Day 8: Río Dulce / Flores Departure in the morning by boat to Río Dulce. You will have the chance to admire the lush tropical forest, hundreds of birds and the impressive Río Dulce Canyon. Continue to Flores, Petén. Hotel Villa Maya or similar Page 2 Day 9: Tikal The majestic city of Tikal, considered the largest and most monumental of all sites discovered in the Mayan World, was declared by UNESCO as a “Cultural and Natural Heritage of Humankind”. In the afternoon, transfer back to Flores, in time for the flight back to Guatemala City.     Xoqoneb’: An Uspanteko story from the central highlands of Guatemala Robert Henderson, Tomás Alberto Méndez López, Ryan Bennett, and Megan Harvey Narrated by Virgilio Tomás Méndez DRAFT 5/06/20 Abstract Uspanteko is one of the smallest and most threatened Mayan languages spoken in Guatemala. While Uspanteko belongs to the K’ichean branch of the Mayan family, it bears a striking number of linguistic features not seen in its sister languages, across major aspects of the grammar, including phonetics/phonology (i.e., lexical tone) and morphosyntax (i.e., null verbal inflection). After introducing an Uspanteko text about the sacred hill Xoqoneb’ and placing it in its cultural context, including surveying related Uspanteko texts, we use Xoqoneb’ to illustrate those aspects of the Uspanteko language which stand out relative to other K’ichean languages. We also comment on the possible sources of these divergent features, which include both language contact and innovation. 1 Introduction The text presented in this article, entitled Xoqoneb’, takes it name from a toponym for one of the four sacred hills that surround Tz’únun Kaab’ (San Miguel Uspantán) in the central highlands of Guatemala. It was related to us in 2019 by Virgilio Tomás Méndez in Jacubí, a neighborhood in the northwest corner of San Miguel Uspantán. This text was transcribed and translated by Mr. Méndez’s son, one of the co-authors of the present work. It describes an encounter between an Uspanteko man and the supernatural lord of the hill Xoqoneb’. The festival of San Miguel is approaching, but the man has no money for a costume to dance in the festivities.
