NOTES

Welcome to the 2016 Pulling Together Canoe Journey Journey Back to the Future

We will be travelling through the traditional territories of Lil’wat, Samahquam, Skatin, Xa’xtsa and Sts’ailes by land and water. Main camping sites are being located at Mt Currie, Skatin and Sts’ailes. After leaving the Mt. Currie camping site to Skatin, the road along the In-SHUCK-ch Forestry Service Road will be completely “off the grid”, with no cellular phone service. On July 6th when leaving Skatin and reaching Mt. Currie you will get cell service back for the travel to the Sts’ailes camping site. The safety crew has a satellite phone and radio communications to first response agencies.

Main Camping Sites The three main camping sites (with vehicle access) are located at: Mt Currie – Xit’olacw Community School, 11098 Black Bear Road, Mt Currie, BC Skatin – Head of the Lake School, 52 km In-SHUCK-ch Forest Service Road, BC Sts’ailes – Sports Field, 4690 Salish Way, Agassiz, BC

Driving Directions

From Vancouver to Mount Currie – travel north on the Sea to Sky (#99) pass Squamish, Whistler and Pemberton. Mount Currie is approximately ten minutes passed the “Stop Lights” at Portage Road and the #99.

From Mount Currie to Xit’olacw Community School – once in Mount Currie, the Sea to Sky Highway ends and turns in to Main Street; from Main Street, turn right on to Lake Road (you will see a small white church just before the turn). You will travel for about another ten minutes along the Birkenhead River on your left hand side and then turn left on to Xit’olacw Road, crossing over the Birkenhead River.

From Mount Currie to Sts’ailes – Ground crew will be traveling for approximately 6 hours to Sts’ailes Camping Site, via the Sea to Sky (#99) down to the Trans Freeway (#1) in Vancouver, then, on the #1 out to Abbotsford and on to the #11 Highway north to Mission, then east on the Lougheed Highway (#7) out to Morris Valley Road.

Once on the Morris Valley Road, go straight when you approach the “4 Way” stop and stay on the paved road all the way up to Chehalis Road, which will be on the right hand side (on the way, you will pass, first a golf course and then a fish hatchery, both on the right hand side and then over a one lane wooden bridge).

Once you have turned right on to Chehalis Road, travel straight down passed School Road to the Community Building and Soccer Fields just pass the Te Lede Lalem Elders Centre.

Forest Service Road Safety As most of the canoe journey will take place in communities with Forest Service Road (FSR) access only, road safety is going to be of great importance to ensure the safety of all the people using the FSR during the time of the Canoe Journey event. Each of the forest districts have recommended road safety rules established to ensure that both the industrial and ‘general public’ users of the FSRs, can use the road at the same time in a safe manner. The following rules must be respected to ensure the safety of all users:

 Drive with your lights on  Yield to Industrial Traffic (i.e.: Logging Trucks)  Drive to Road Conditions, recommend not going over 50 km/h  Stop in safe visible location (Don’t block the Road)  Ware your seat belt  Observe and Obey Road Signage  Drive on the right hand side of the road  Don’t drink and drive While driving on the In-SHUCK-ch FSR, it is important to follow the 3 C’s rule – Use Caution, Be Courtesy and Concentrate on the Road. The last place to gas up will be in Pemberton or Mt Currie; it is also advised to carry a tire repair kit in your vehicle, in the event you get a flat tire.
