There were concerns from stakeholders regarding how the license conditions are set and used to achieve the set Resource Quality Objectives (RQOs) and how to improve the resource class to a desired class. It was clear that both regulators and users have no clear understanding of the link between Source Directed Controls (SDCs) and Resource Directed Measures (RDMs), and how they inform each other.

The Klip River, its tributaries and associated wetlands have been described as one of the most heavily impacted rivers in the country being subject to every type of conceivable pollution. These included mining, urban, industrial as well as agricultural impacts. In addition to an influence on water quality there is an impact on the water level, flow regime and stream morphology of the River. Humphries1 Terrence S. McCarthy2 Letitia Pillay1 Wetlands are well known to be efficient at sequestering pollutants from contaminated water. We investigated metal accumulation in the peats of the Klip River, a natural wetland that has received contaminated AFFILIATIONS: water from gold mining operations in Johannesburg for over 130 years. The distribution of metal accumulation within the peat profiles suggests that contamination arises from CORRESPONDENCE TO: a combination of sources and processes. Elevated concentrations in the shallow peat are attributed to Marc Humphries the input of contaminated surface water via tributaries that drain the Central Rand Goldfield, whereas EMAIL: enrichments in the deeper peat suggest significant sub-surface inflow of contaminated water through the [email protected] underlying dolomitic rocks.
