Start button and “pinned icons” are to the left on the taskbar. Open programmes are in the centre (with a border around them so they resemble buttons.) Notifications, Clock, and Show Desktop button are at the far right. Pinned Icons Icons can be pinned to the Taskbar (and the Start menu). They remain visible, whether they are open or closed. (Unpinned applications are only visible when they are open.) Right-click on a program icon in the taskbar to pin it to the taskbar. Click once on the icon to open a pinned taskbar icon. When the application is open, pinned icons look like any other open programme on the taskbar. But when they are closed, they stay on the taskbar. In this image, Firefox, Word, and Paint are all open. In this image, Firefox and Paint are closed, but since Firefox was pinned, it is still visible. Windows - Taskbar features (continued) Viewing Open Files When programmes are open, the application icons are displayed in the central part of the Taskbar. Click on the programme icon to switch to that application. If multiple files are open in that application, by default the icon changes to a stack of icons, hiding the titles of the open files. You can hover the mouse over the icon to see a list of titles, and then click on one to move to that file. If you prefer to see all the titles in the taskbar, right-click on an empty area of the taskbar (not on top of an icon) and select Properties from the menu. In the Properties window, in the Taskbar tab, go to the Taskbar buttons menu. Change this to Never combine (or Combine when taskbar is full). The taskbar will now resemble the Windows XP taskbar, displaying titles of all open files in separate icon buttons.
