To create a virtual orchestra performance is no easy task. It takes hours of compiling and editing audio and video to pull off well. For this virtual orchestra performance, we worked on the audio and video separately and then merged them together into one seamless production.

We started off by creating a foundation of a performance by having members of the Symphony Orchestra come in and record the audio of their individual parts. Once we edited these initial recordings, we layered the audio from the other videos that were Lucas Shogren, String Coach & Music Education submitted on top of them. Much of the work Instructor, recorded a few students live to get a is ensuring that all parts are lined up to the solid base for the audio of the recording project. track and then, through a mixing process, making the audio sound blended together to give the acoustic impression that they were all performed in the same place.

Once we get the audio in a good spot we start compiling and editing the video to line up with the mixed audio. Each video is reviewed to confirm that every note played lines up with the audio. Once each video is aligned we arrange the videos on the screen and start creating different scenes that will be used according to the musical needs.

Symphony students were selected to record live as they are playing all of Egmont Overture, with the other orchestras coming in later.

After each scene is created we edit between each scene to tell the musical story of Beethoven’s Egmont Overture. This is a multi-step process, but in the end the audience will get to experience how even from a distance we can make amazing music and celebrate the 250th birthday of Beethoven. We hope you enjoy this endeavor and are inspired by the talent of all the young people who participated in this wonderful performance.

Although we couldn’t be together for a live concert this fall, we are grateful for Lucas’ expertise and help to make this project come to life! Private Instructors of MYS Students

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827): Overture to Egmont, Op. 84

Beethoven’s Egmont, Op. 84, is a set of incidental music composed to accompany the production of Goethe’s play Egmont. Pieces of incidental music are written to accompany a play or film, incorporated into the background of the production to enhance the experience for its audience.

Goethe’s play and Beethoven’s music create a dramatic narrative of the life and heroism of 16th-century nobleman Lamoral, Count of Egmont from the Low Countries. It is set during the Napoleonic Wars when the First French Empire had extended its domination across Europe. Egmont, a Dutch resistance fighter bent on the liberation of his country from Spanish occupation, is immortalized and exalted through Beethoven’s music for having taken a valiant stance against oppression. He is captured by the Spanish regime and is sentenced to death. The Overture, originally premiered in 1810, became an unofficial anthem for the 1956 Hungarian Revolution.

The Overture opens with a long-held, heavy, F minor chord (Egmont in prison) followed by a slow Spanish dance in a 3/2 meter. The weight of Spanish occupation is clear. The Spanish dance leads directly into an Allegro filled with lyrical tunes, their poignancy ensuring imminent tragedy. As the music progresses, the measured rhythms from the opening gain urgency and momentum, leading to a huge climax that explodes during the Egmont-Spanish battle. Eventually, the woodwinds chant a somber funeral prayer. Egmont has been defeated (beheaded). His lover, Claechen, is represented in a gentle set of melodies . . . and, in the drama, she promises that Egmont’s death will provide inspiration for a future revolt.

Beethoven surprises his listeners at the end of his Overture. Goethe had specifically requested that the ending not be a lament, and so Beethoven adds new material in a symphony of victory: breaking out in high spirits with F major. Horn and trumpet fanfares ring, symbolizing the righteousness of Egmont’s struggle surviving beyond his moment of defeat. Concluding his Overture to Egmont, Beethoven leaves the listeners instilled with both lesson and hope.
