    Report of the Ncaa Division I Council February 17, 2021, Videoconference

    REPORT OF THE NCAA DIVISION I COUNCIL FEBRUARY 17, 2021, VIDEOCONFERENCE In an effort to connect NCAA Division I Council items to the NCAA pillars of academics, fairness and well-being, items included in this report have an identifying pillar. There is an additional pillar, operational, that is used to denote items that relate to maintaining a stable and efficient Division I. KEY ITEMS. 1. Extension of the Temporary Recruiting Dead Period. (Academics/Fairness/Well- Being/Operational) The NCAA Division I Council adopted emergency temporary legislation to extend the temporary recruiting dead period (as defined in NCAA Bylaw 13.02.5.5) in all sports through May 31. In addition, the Council committed to providing clarity regarding permissible recruiting activities beginning June 1 (e.g., campus visits, evaluations) as soon as possible, and not later than its April 14-15 meeting. The extension reflects the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic and concerns regarding in-person interaction among prospective student-athletes, institutional staff, and student-athletes. Extending the recruiting dead period now provides the membership and prospective student-athletes with clarity regarding the status of permissible recruiting activities for the remainder of the spring 2021 academic term. 2. Legislative Action – NCAA Division I Proposal No. 2019-25 Adopted. (Fairness/Well- Being/Operational) Legislative actions taken by the Council are listed in Attachment A. Voting results are available in Attachment B. The Council removed Proposal No. 2019-25 from the table and adopted the legislation, which applies to bowl subdivision football and men’s and women’s basketball. The proposal specifies that the definition of an individual associated with a prospective student-athlete does not include an individual who maintained (or directed others to maintain) contact with a prospective student-athlete (or a prospective student-athlete’s relatives, legal guardians or coaches) only while employed in the athletics department at another four-year institution.

When you ask someone what they think of when discussing what a nurse looks like, a majority of people would picture a woman. Over the years the profession is seeing an increasing amount of men deciding to break this stereotype. Being a male, I can say that the reason I chose to pursue a degree/career in nursing is not to break this stereotype but instead, I chose this profession because it allows me the opportunity to help others when they need help the most.

    Al Smith Was First and Foremost a Ballplayer Whose Major-League Career Spanned 12 Seasons with Four American League Teams

    Smith was quiet man who made his noise on field By Gary Livacari Al Smith was first and foremost a ballplayer whose major-league career spanned 12 seasons with four American League teams. Primarily an outfielder, he played six positions as a major leaguer and was a fine defender with a strong arm and good speed. Smith finished with a .272 life-time batting average, hit 164 home runs, and reached base nearly 36 percent of the time. He also made two A.L. All- Star teams and played for two pennant winners (both managed by Al Lopez). He hit a career-best .315 in 1960 and posted his biggest power numbers—28 homers and 93 RBIs—in 1961. But despite his considerable on-field accomplishments, he will always be best remembered as the unwitting subject in one of baseball‘s most lasting images: the “beer bath” photo from Game Two of the 1959 World Series. When Smith died in 2002, his obituary in the New York Times was headlined, “Al Smith, 73, Dies; Was Doused in Series.” Alphonse Eugene Smith was born on February 7, 1928, in Kirkwood, Missouri, a St. Louis suburb. He grew up a fan of both local big-league teams, the Cardinals and the Browns, and his hero was Cardinals outfielder Joe Medwick. Nicknamed “Fuzzy,” Smith was a versatile, multitalented athlete at Douglas High in Webster Groves, Missouri. The MVP of the baseball team, he also starred in football, basketball, and track, and was a Golden Gloves boxing champion in the 160-pound division. Smith scored 33 touchdowns in one football season and was reputed to have scored 10 touchdowns in one game.

    On May 4 & 5, 2012, the Department of Geography, Geology, and Planning hosted its first-ever reunion for graduates of all our programs. The event was organized by a sub-committee of our departmental Advisory Board consisting of Dottie Lofstrom (Chair), Tim Bixler, Jenni Jones, and Scott Smith. The festivities began on Friday afternoon with an Open House in the department and a seminar presentation by current departmental majors. Fall 2012 Missouri State University GeoNews page 1 Optional daytime activities for Saturday included a golf outing hosted by Stan Fagerlin and Danja Feeback, a geography/planning tour of downtown Springfield redevelopment projects, and a geology field trip that included a picnic at Sequiota Park (left) and a tour of Smallin Cave (below). The weekend culminated with a cookout at Fassnight Park (below). In total, nearly 200 alumni, family, and friends attended one or more of the weekend’s festivities.
