Them and Said That Sports Constitutes an Important Component of Any Educational Endeavor Chandigarh, May 1: The Education Department, Chandigarh Administration organized its annual sports prize distribution function for the session 2012-2013 at Tagore Theatre here today. Adviser to the Administrator, Mr. K.K. Sharma was the chief guest on the occasion. Prizes were given to the sports persons for securing the top positions in inter-school tournaments. Congratulating the prize winners Mr. Sharma encouraged them and said that Sports constitutes an important component of any educational endeavor. After all, a sound mind needs a sound body and this is what exactly can be achieved through promotion of sports in the schools. Sports helps in developing the physical, mental, and even intellectual faculties of students and occasions like that of today provide us with an opportunity not only to motivate the young students to take up sports but also to evaluate the sufficiency of efforts being undertaken in the sports field. He further stated that as many as 13000 boys and 7000 girls from all the Govt. schools and private schools participated in 43 sports disciplines in the inter-school tournaments in the year 2012-13. He also said that the Administration is drafting some new policies to promote sports in the city. Also, the initiative of Chandigarh Administration to launch the Chandigarh School Sports and Fitness is also laudable as it intends to take all the students in its fold. Mr. V.K Singh, Finance cum Education Secretary explained that a joint initiative by the UT Administration and the CLTA has been instrumental in the introduction of tennis coaching program in 4 Govt. Schools. Along with it, plans to boost 20 Basketball courts, Volleyball and other sports are also underway. A welcome song was sung by the students of GMSSS Sector-35, Bangra was presented by the children of GSSS Sector-38-West. Senior officers of the Chandigarh Administration were also present on the occasion. Promotion of sports in the country, including promotion of indigenous and traditional sports and games, is the primary responsibility of the State Government and the concerned National Sports Federations (NSFs). The Central Government complements/supplements the efforts of the State Governments and NSFs. This Ministry is implementing a Central Sector Scheme, namely Khelo India which inter-alia includes a vertical „Promotion of rural and indigenous/tribal games‟ which aims to showcase our rural and indigenous/tribal games through annual competitions and dissemination of information so as to encourage children and youth to take up these games in a major way, paving way for their future mainstreaming. This Ministry also supplements the efforts of the NSFs by implementing the scheme of Assistance to NSFs under which funds are provided to recognized National Sports Federations for conducting National / International tournaments, participation in international events, coaching camps, purchase of equipments.

Presently, 128 trainees (73 Boys & 55 Girls) are being trained under these centres. Similarly, to promote wrestling the Indian traditional sports, SAI have also adopted 48 Akharas under NSTC Scheme across the country. Presently, 766 talented wrestlers (677 Boys & 89 Girls) are being trained in these Akharas. Further, a vertical ‘Promotion of Rural and Indigenous/ Tribal Games’ under Khelo India Scheme has been implemented by Govt. of India for promoting rural and indigenous/ tribal sports through identification of talent, provision of grant to meet expenditure on equipment, apparel, coaches training programme, infrastructure development, salary for National Sports Federation (NSF) appointed coaches and scholarships for meritorious trainees recommended by NSF.
