The Oberai School of Integrated Studies
PULSE April 2019 THE OBERAI SCHOOL OF INTEGRATED STUDIES PULSE – April 2019 (Issue 10) Visit to the Regional Science Centre On the 9th of April, 2019, the students of class IX went for a field trip to the Regional Science Center, Dehradun. The experience was thought provoking. The students first visited Taramandal, where they learned about constellations, their shapes and placement in the sky. After that they saw a 3D science show on Global Warming and how humans are destroying our natural resource by poisoning the oceans and destroying the rainforests. At the same time, they were also explained about the process of creating 3D images in the eyes and the way depth is perceived by our brain. They saw some of the world's cutting edge technologies in the Tech Exhibition. At the end they learned about our very own Himalayas in the Himalayan Exhibition. Overall it provided an opportunity to look beyond new technologies and to explore them in a broader context. It was a fun filled learning experience. Arav Chaturvedi Panchhi Class IX A Venture to Viraatkhai On 16th April, 2019, Classes IV & V went to Viraatkhai. We left school at 08:30 am and reached Viraatkhai at 1pm. INDIVIDUAL GAMES 4 Games and sports are important parts of our lives. They are essential to enjoy overall health and well-being. Sports and games offer numerous advantages and are thus highly recommended for everyone irrespective of their age. Sports with individualistic approach characterised with graceful skills of players are individual sports. Do you like the idea of playing an individual sport and be responsible for your win or loss, success or failure? There are various sports that come under this category. This chapter will help you to enhance your knowledge about Athletics, Badminton, Gymnastics, Judo, Swimming, Table Tennis, and Wrestling. ATHLETICS Running, jumping and throwing are natural and universal forms of human physical expression. Track and field events are the improved versions of all these. These are among the oldest of all sporting competitions. Athletics consist of track and field events. In the track events, competitions of races of different distances are conducted. The different track and field events have their roots in ancient human history. History Ancient Olympic Games are the first recorded examples of organised track and field events. In 776 B.C., in Olympia, Greece, only one event was contested which was known as the stadion footrace. The scope of the games expanded in later years. Further it included running competitions, but the introduction of the Ancient Olympic pentathlon marked a step towards track and field as it is recognised today. There were five events in pentathlon namely—discus throw, long jump, javelin throw, the stadion foot race, and wrestling. 2021-22 Chap-4.indd 49 31-07-2020 15:26:11 50 Health and Physical Education - XI Track and field events were also present at the Pan- Activity 4.1 Athletics at the 1960 Summer Hellenic Games in Greece around 200 B.C. -

Sindhu, Sakshi Malik who won medals, and Dipa Karmakar and others who came close have ensured that we have some reason to smile as they demonstrated that Indian sportspersons can compete at the highest levels in any world stage. Much has been said and written about India’s performance in the Rio 2016 Olympics. In any corporate context, the accountability for poor performance by a company rests on its management and the Board of Directors. Similarly, citizens and sports lovers as stakeholders should hold sports associations and sports administrators accountable for the performance of India at sporting events. InGovern has been a champion of good corporate governance in India. In this report, we aim to assess whether we can apply similar principles of governance to sports associations. -
Bike Polo Story
FORewoRD The game of bicycle polo was conceived in 1891 and is a direct descendant of the very ancient game of horse polo which dates back to 600 BC, and the modern game of hardcourt bike polo - one of the world’s fastest growing urban sports is considered the edgier first cousin of the 19th century grass version. From its genesis in late 19th century Ireland through to its modern day incarnation, this book unravels the history of this fascinating and misunderstood sport. It charts key moments, explores the games pioneers and gets under the skin of some of today’s star exponents. And there are some surprises along the way… Before Hoy, Pendleton, Farah and Ennis cast a golden glow over London 2012, 104 years earlier, bike polo pedalled into the 1908 London Olympics as an exhibition sport. And it may surprise you to know that Princes; Phillip, Wills and Harry have all be known to ditch the horse in favour of the bike… This is the compelling and eventful story of the history of bike polo. Enjoy the journey… 1891 Bicycle Polo, a game of strenuous amusement is born... n 1891, having retired from racing – ‘ordinary’ and tricycle – the Irish cycling Ienthusiast Richard J McCready (hereafter referred to as ‘RJ’) set about inventing a game that would provide ‘strenuous amusement’ and a welcome diversion from editing his beloved Irish Cyclist. His invention? ‘Polo on Wheels’. Following the inaugural game at the Scalp in Co. Wicklow, Richard J McCready Cycling magazine observed the following: “the game of cycling polo promises to be immensely popular…and not at all so dangerous as would appear from the title.” Quick to show his hand was the mysterious Cosmo- Cyclo who wrote an enthusiastic letter published in Cycling stating that since the introduction of pneumatic tyres “cycle polo is not only possible but exciting and enjoyable too!” In Ireland, the sport rapidly gained momentum, with the wider racing fraternity quickly picking up on the benefits of a game that would efficiently hone “..the hands, the head and the eye..” of the racing man. -
