The Holy See
The Holy See PASTORAL VISIT TO BRESCIA AND CONCESIO EUCHARISTIC CONCELEBRATION HOMILY OF HIS HOLINESS BENEDICT XVI Paul VI Square - Brescia, Italy Sunday, 8 November 2009 Dear Brothers and Sisters, I have great joy in being able to break the Bread of the Word of God and of the Eucharist with you here, in the heart of the Diocese of Brescia, where the Servant of God Giovanni Battista Montini, Pope Paul VI was born and educated in his youth. I greet you all with affection and thank you for your warm welcome! In particular I thank Bishop Luciano Monari, for his words to me at the beginning of the celebration and with him I greet the Cardinals, Bishops, priests and deacons, the men and women religious and all the pastoral workers. I thank the Mayor for his words and his gift, and the other civil and military Authorities. I address a special thought to the sick who have gathered in the Cathedral. At the heart of the Liturgy of the Word this Sunday the 32nd in Ordinary Time we find the figure of the poor widow or, more precisely, we find her gesture when she dropped her last coins into the collection box of the Temple treasury. Thanks to Jesus' attentive look it has become the proverbial "widow's mite" and indeed is synonymous with the generosity of those who give unsparingly the little they possess. However, I would like first of all to emphasize the importance of the atmosphere in which this Gospel episode takes place, that is, the Temple of Jerusalem, the religious centre of the People of Israel and the heart of its whole life. -
Saint Geltrude Comensoli
Saint Geltrude Comensoli SAINT OF THE DAY 18-02-2021 The Eucharist was "Heaven on earth" to Saint Geltrude Comensoli (1847-1903), founder of the Institute of the Sacramentine Sisters which was consecrated to the perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and born from her love for Christ. Worshipping God in the Eucharistic Presence was the source of Geltrude's charity and the constant object of her meditations, which were often addressed to the mysteries of the Rosary: "The first adoration began at the cave in Bethlehem. The Holy Virgin and Saint Joseph prostrated themselves for the first time before the Most Holy Humanity of the Incarnate Word". The fifth of ten children, seven of whom died in their infancy, Saint Geltrude was born in Bienno, a small town near Brescia [Northern Italy], and was baptised, on the day of her birth, with the name of Catherine. As she wrote in her diary, when she was five Jesus instilled in her heart, "a great desire to love Him much, and He kept teaching me what I had to do to please Him and be His own". The little girl often meditated on the sacrifice of Christ ("I'm thinking", she replied when asked what she was doing) and on the sense of sin, the horror of which she could perceive through her intimate union with God. At seven years old, in fact, she was told by her mother that it was time for her first Confession: "I was astonished, and replied that I had been going to Confession every Saturday for some time". -

This Sunday’s readings remind us that we need to have the leadership of good shepherds, who will be able to guide and teach us, not least by their own example. I am very excited because Pope Francis has chosen a really good shepherd as our new archbishop, Bishop Peter Comensoli of Broken Bay Diocese. I have had the good fortune to meet Bishop Comensoli a number of times since he was appointed an Auxiliary Bishop of Sydney Archdiocese in 2011. I have always been impressed by him and I have witnessed his very fair and just handling of a particular problem when he was Apostolic Administrator of Sydney Archdiocese in 2014. We really are very fortunate to be gaining a dynamic and charismatic, young Archbishop who can be a Good Shepherd to us and for us, leading us confidently and with resounding hope into the future. Bishop Comensoli was born in1964 in the Wollongong region. His father, the late Michael Comensoli, was born in the Val Camonica region of northern Italy in 1924 and came to Australia as a child. -

The Holy See
The Holy See ADDRESS OF HIS HOLINESS JOHN PAUL II TO THE PILGRIMS WHO HAD COME TO ROME FOR THE BEATIFICATION OF NEW BLESSEDS Monday, 4 October 1999 Dear Brothers and Sisters, 1. Yesterday's solemn celebration is in a certain sense continued in our meeting today, at which we would like to renew our song of praise and thanksgiving to the Lord for the new blesseds, whom the Church holds up to us as examples to imitate. With great affection I greet each of you who have come in such numbers to pay homage to these faithful witnesses of the Gospel. In contemplating Fr Ferdinand Mary Baccilieri, a humble and zealous priest, I extend a cordial greeting to the Sisters Servants of Mary of Galeazza, who venerate him as their founder and feel committed to keep his spirit alive and active in their Institute's work. May the spiritual daughters of this new Blessed and all who invoke him as their protector welcome his invitation to reflect constantly on the Christian message and to foster a tender devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows. It is important to understand that following Christ necessarily involves that serious revision of one's life to which he exhorted everyone, especially on the occasion of the parish missions. May the desire to offer each one the clear teaching of the Gospel grow in those who, in following his example, continue his apostolic action to reach families and individual faithful. 2. I cordially greet the brothers and sisters who have come for the beatification of Fr Edward Poppe, especially those from Belgium. -
The Martyrology of the Monastery of the Ascension
The Martyrology of the Monastery of the Ascension Introduction History of Martyrologies The Martyrology is an official liturgical book of the Catholic Church. The official Latin version of the Martyrology contains a short liturgical service the daily reading of the Martyrology’s list of saints for each day. The oldest surviving martyologies are the lists of martyrs and bishops from the fourth-century Roman Church. The martyrology wrongly attributed to St. Jerome was written in Ital in the second half of the fifth century, but all the surviving versions of it come from Gaul. It is a simple martyrology, which lists the name of the saint and the date and place of death of the saint. Historical martyrologies give a brief history of the saints. In the eighth and ninth centuries, St. Bede, Rhabanus Maurus, and Usuard all wrote historical martyrologies. The Roman Martyrology, based primarily on Usuard’s, was first published in 1583, and the edition of 1584 was made normative in the Roman rite by Gregory XIII. The post-Vatican II revision appeared first in 2001. A revision that corrected typographical errors and added 117 people canonized by Pope John Paul II between 2001 and 2004, appeared in 2005.1 The Purpose and Principles of This Martyology The primary purpose of this martyrology is to provide an historically accurate text for liturgical use at the monastery, where each day after noon prayer it is customary to read the martyrology for the following day. Some things in this martyrology are specific to the Monastery of the Ascension: namesdays of the members of the community, anniversaries of members of the community who have died, a few references to specific events or saints of local interest. -

Seven New Saints in Heaven Dear Brothers and Sisters, Greetings to You and Your Loved Ones
October 21, 2018 Connect - Grow - Give 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time Pastor's Message Seven New Saints in Heaven Dear Brothers and Sisters, Greetings to you and your loved ones. Last Sunday, Pope Francis canonized seven holy men and women. The names and brief biographies of each of the new saints were presented to the Holy Father and to the thousands of people in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday, October 14th, 2018 by the Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, Cardinal Giovanni Becciu. (The Information below is from the Vatican Website). Saint Óscar Romero (1917-1980): The archbishop of San Salvador, El Salvador, from 1977 until his martyrdom, Archbishop Romero was an outspoken opponent of the political strife and injustice in his country, although he did not support liberation theology. Ordained a priest in 1942, he studied in Rome and served for many years as a parish priest, as auxiliary bishop of San Salvador and as bishop of Santiago de María. He was murdered March 24, 1980, while saying Mass, and his assassins were never brought to justice. He was declared a martyr by Pope Francis in early 2015 and beatified in May 2015 in San Salvador before a crowd of more than 250,000 faithful. Saint Vincenzo Romano (1751-1831): Saint Vincenzo Romano spent almost his entire life as a parish priest in the area around his native Naples, Italy. Ordained a priest in 1775, he spent many years at the Church of Santa Croce in his hometown of Torre del Greco, where he was given the name “The Worker Priest” because of his inexhaustible labors on behalf of his flock, especially the poor.
